Peter Andreas - Smuggler Nation: How Illicit Trade Made America Unabridged AudioBook | 2014 | Genre: General Non-Fic | English | ISBN-13: 9780199746880 | MP3 64Kb | Length: 15 hrs and 4 mins | 414.32 MB America is a smuggler nation. Our long history of illicit imports has ranged from West Indies molasses and Dutch gunpowder in the 18th century, to British industrial technologies and African slaves in the 19th century, to French condoms and Canadian booze in the early 20th century, to Mexican workers and Colombian cocaine in the modern era. Providing a sweeping narrative history from colonial times to the present, Smuggler Nation is the first book to retell the story of America--and of its engagement with its neighbors and the rest of the world--as a series of highly contentious battles over clandestine commerce. As Peter Andreas demonstrates in this provocative and fascinating account, smuggling has played a pivotal and too often overlooked role in America's birth, westward expansion, and economic development, while anti-smuggling campaigns have dramatically enhanced the federal government's policing powers. The great irony, Andreas tells us, is that a country that was born and grew up through smuggling is today the world's leading anti-smuggling crusader. In tracing America's long and often tortuous relationship with the murky underworld of smuggling, Andreas provides a much-needed antidote to today's hyperbolic depictions of out of control borders and growing global crime threats. Urgent calls by politicians and pundits to regain control of the nation's borders suffer from a severe case of historical amnesia, nostalgically implying that they were ever actually under control. This is pure mythology, says Andreas. For better and for worse, America's borders have always been highly porous. Far from being a new and unprecedented danger to America, the illicit underside of globalization is actually an old American tradition. As Andreas shows, it goes back not just years but centuries. And its impact has been decidedly double-edged, not only subverting but also empowering America. Andrew Lycett - Rudyard Kipling Unabridged AudioBook | 2009 | Genre: Biographical | English | ISBN-13: 9780753810859 | MP3 64Kb | Length: 29 hrs and 35 mins | 812.66 MB Paragon of English virtues or racist imperialist? Andrew Lycett (acclaimed biographer of Ian Fleming) has returned to primary sources to tell the intricate story of a misunderstood genius who became Britain's most famous and highest earning author. Among the many new sources, Lycett has discovered previously unpublished letters that illuminate Kipling's crucial years in India, his first girlfriend (the model for Mrs Hauksbee of Plain Tales from the Hills), his parents' decision to send him back to England to boarding school; and in his adult life his use of opium, his frustrating times in London and the brief peace he found in America before the devastating loss of both his young daughter and, in the First World War, his son. Lycett also uncovers the extraordinary story of Kipling's great love for Flo Garrard, daughter of the crown jeweller and unravels the complicated yet enthralling saga of the American family, the Balestiers and of Carrie Balestier who became Kipling's wife. This biography is full of new material on Kipling's financial dealings with Lord Beaverbrook, his friendships with T.E.Lawrence, the painter Edward Burne-Jones and the Conservative politician and Prime Minister Stanley Baldwin who was his cousin. Lycett places Kipling in an historical and social context with the skills that lead Selina Hastings in the Sunday Telegraph to write of his Ian Fleming: Superb ...This is an exemplary biography, beautifully written, fast-paced and extremely perceptive.' Mark Twain - Letters from the Earth Unabridged AudioBook | 2010 | Genre: Pol/Soc/Relig | English | ISBN-13: 978-1617430060 | MP3 192Kb | 542.42 MB Letters from the Earth is one of Mark Twain's posthumously published works. The essays were written during a difficult time in Twain's life; he was deep in debt and had lost his wife and one of his daughters. The content concerns morality and religion and strikes a sarcastic (Twain's term throughout the book) tone. Initially, his daughter, Clara Clemens, objected to its publication in March 1939, probably because of its controversial and iconoclastic views on religion, claiming it presented a "distorted" view of her father. Henry Nash Smith helped change her position in 1960. Clara explained her change of heart in 1962 saying that "Mark Twain belonged to the world" and that public opinion had become more tolerant. She was also influenced to release the papers due to her annoyance with Soviet propaganda charges that her father's ideas were being suppressed in the United States. The papers were selected, edited and sequenced for the book in 1939 by Bernard DeVoto. The book consists of a series of commentaries in essay and short story form. Many of these pieces express Twain's discomfort with and disdain for Christianity, both as a theological position and a lifestyle. The title story consists of eleven letters written by the archangel Satan to archangels Gabriel and Michael, about his observations on the curious proceedings of earthly life and the nature of man's religions. Other pieces in the book include a morality tale told as a bedtime discussion with Twain's children, Susy and Clara, about a family of cats, and an essay explaining why an anaconda is morally superior to Man. Textual references make clear that sections, at least, of 'Letters from the Earth' were written shortly before his death in April 1910. (For instance, Letter VII, in discussing the ravages of hookworm, refers to the $1,000,000 gift of John D. Rockefeller Jr. to help eradicate the disease - a gift that was announced on October 28, 1909, less than six months before Twain's death.) However, another excerpt appears in a discussion of the Palestinian town of Nablous, in The Innocents Abroad. This passage was written more than four decades before his death, in 1867 or 1868, and appears to be an oblique reference to the idea that later became 'Letters from the Earth.' "Twain sentimentalists will gasp, Bible-belters will turn purple, austere stylistic purists will raise eyebrows - but dyed-in-the-wool Twain enthusiasts will grab hungrily for what amounts to a new volume by the 'Lincoln of our Literature.'... The pages in this volume range from furious to funny, from deadly earnestness to frothy word-play." -Library Journal Download Link http://rapidgator.net/file/5b31f76d6367647a6ea14b2efe8a7925/Letters.from.the.Earth.part1.rar.html http://rapidgator.net/file/29257ec61bbe752f44e0cb7f36fdede1/Letters.from.the.Earth.part2.rar.html http://rapidgator.net/file/4d889c67cd8f6d533b265462f10c64c7/Letters.from.the.Earth.part3.rar.html http://rapidgator.net/file/819d871a07cbc91bfc0e736f95acfbbd/Letters.from.the.Earth.part4.rar.html

Kai Bird - The Good Spy: The Life and Death of Robert Ames Unabridged AudioBook | 2014 | Genre: Biographical | English | ISBN-13: 978-0307889751 | MP3 64Kb | Length: 14 hrs and 50 mins | 507.68 MB The Good Spy is Pulitzer Prize-winning biographer Kai Bird's compelling portrait of the remarkable life and death of one of the most important operatives in CIA history - a man who, had he lived, might have helped heal the rift between Arabs and the West. On April 18, 1983, a bomb exploded outside the American Embassy in Beirut, killing 63 people. The attack was a geopolitical turning point. It marked the beginning of Hezbollah as a political force, but even more important, it eliminated America's most influential and effective intelligence officer in the Middle East - CIA operative Robert Ames. What set Ames apart from his peers was his extraordinary ability to form deep, meaningful connections with key Arab intelligence figures. Some operatives relied on threats and subterfuge, but Ames worked by building friendships and emphasizing shared values - never more notably than with Yasir Arafat's charismatic intelligence chief and heir apparent Ali Hassan Salameh (aka "The Red Prince"). Ames' deepening relationship with Salameh held the potential for a lasting peace. Within a few years, though, both men were killed by assassins, and America's relations with the Arab world began heading down a path that culminated in 9/11, the War on Terror, and the current fog of mistrust. Bird, who as a child lived in the Beirut Embassy and knew Ames as a neighbor when he was twelve years old, spent years researching The Good Spy. Not only does the book draw on hours of interviews with Ames' widow, and quotes from hundreds of Ames' private letters, it's woven from interviews with scores of current and former American, Israeli, and Palestinian intelligence officers as well as other players in the Middle East "Great Game." What emerges is a masterpiece-level narrative of the making of a CIA officer, a uniquely insightful history of twentieth-century conflict in the Middle East, and an absorbing hour-by-hour account of the Beirut Embassy bombing. Even more impressive, Bird draws on his reporter's skills to deliver a full dossier on the bombers and expose the shocking truth of where the attack's mastermind resides today. Jonas Jonasson - The Girl Who Saved the King of Sweden Unabridged AudioBook | 2014 | Genre: Humor | English | ISBN-13: B00FJ3CK2Y | MP3 64Kb | Length: 11 hrs and 58 mins | 327.31 MB From the author of The 100-Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out the Window and Disappeared comes a picaresque tale of how one person's actions can have far-reaching-even global-consequences On June 14, 2007, the king and the prime minister of Sweden went missing from a gala banquet at the royal castle. Later it was said that both had fallen ill, but the truth is different. The real story starts much earlier, in 1961, with the birth of Nombeko Mayeki in a shack in Soweto. Nombeko was fated to grow up fast and die early in her poverty-stricken township, be it from drugs, alcohol, or just plain despair. But Nombeko takes a different path. She finds work as a housecleaner and eventually makes her way up to the position of chief advisor, at the helm of one of the world's most secret projects. Here is where the tale merges with then diverges from reality. South Africa developed six nuclear missiles in the 1980s, then voluntarily dismantled them in 1994. This is the story of the seventh missile, the one that was never supposed to have existed. Nombeko Mayeki knows too much about it, and now she's on the run from both the South African justice system and the most terrifying secret service in the world. The fate of the planet now lies in Nombeko's hands. Jonasson introduces us to a cast of eccentrics: a nerve-damaged American Vietnam deserter, twin brothers who are officially only one person, three careless Chinese girls, an angry young woman, a potato-growing baroness, the Swedish king and the prime minister. Quirky and utterly unique, The Girl Who Saved the King of Sweden is a charming and humorous account of one young woman's unlikely adventure. Duff Hart-Davis - The War that Never was Unabridged AudioBook | 2012 | Genre: History | English | ISBN-13: 978-0099553298 | MP3 64Kb | 270.14 MB For the very first time, The War That Never Was tells the fascinating story of a secret war fought by British mercenaries in the Yemen in the early 1960s. In a covert operation organised over whisky and sodas in the clubs of Chelsea and Mayfair, a group of former SAS officers - led by the irrepressible Colonel Jim Johnson - arranged for a squadron of British mercenaries to travel to the remote mountain regions of the Yemen, to arm, train and lead Yemeni tribesmen in their fight against a 60,000-strong contingent of Egyptian soldiers. It was one of the most uneven running battles ever waged; the Egyptians fielded a huge, professionally-trained army. The British fought back at the head of a ragtag force of tribal warriors and, ultimately, won. Egypt's President Nasser described the battle in the Yemen as 'my Vietnam'. It's a fascinating, forgotten, and rip-roaringly entertaining pocket of British military history, much in the spirit of Ben MvIntyre's bestselling Agent Zigzag and Operation Mincemeat. "Remarkable story ... Hart-Davis tells splendidly the astonishing tale he has uncovered" Max Hastings for The Sunday Times "Duff Hart-Davis has taken over the writing of this book from Jim Johnson's second-in-command, Tony Boyle, who was working from Johnson's archive; both men died before the work was completed. He has done his extraordinary subject justice. Why did any of them get involved with the project? Well, the pay was good, but that is exactly the sort of thing men say to cover their enjoyment and excitement. The fact of the matter is that it was a terrific adventure" Philip Hensher for The Spectator "Plenty of books claim to be about forgotten aspects of the past. Yet Duff Hart-Davis has managed to go one better in this tale of British mercenaries and Egyptian skulduggery by unearthing a war that has hitherto remained more or less secret" James Owen for Mail on Sunday 20110227 "An extraordinary story that needed to be told... Duff Hart-Davis tells their fascinating story, which will be new to many readers, remarkably well" Charles Guthrie for the Literary Review "This dramatic piece of history is thoroughly researched, drawn from first-hand accounts of the mercenaries' experience. Written at the pace of a James Bond thriller, Hart-Davis leavens his gung-ho tale with details that are at times touching and humorous" The Herald Download Link http://rapidgator.net/file/c859f5e63d2f32c40e9001bb4e4babaa/The.War.That.Never.Was.part1.rar.html http://rapidgator.net/file/5f9271dc63b129912c61fc5cb00c7b26/The.War.That.Never.Was.part2.rar.html http://rapidgator.net/file/2e37b92c8044f15ad586b2610bb1cb70/The.War.That.Never.Was.part3.rar.html http://rapidgator.net/file/98fb856a14655672c1b4a139c396fbb4/The.War.That.Never.Was.part4.rar.html

James Somers - A World Within (Wielder's Saga #1) Unabridged AudioBook | 2014 | Genre: Young Adult | English | ISBN-13: N/A | MP3 128Kb | Length: 7 hrs and 5 mins | 389.48 MB Fourteen year-old Daniel Harwick's powerless days bullied at Ekhart Academy are about to end. Traumatically catapulted into a beautiful but terrifying world within, Daniel finds himself on the run from Pirates, Dragons, Shapeshifters, Spider-Elves, Griffins, Krakens, Cyborgs and even "Death" himself. Reluctantly, Daniel joins with a strange band of ragtag warriors questing for the legendary Wielder who alone can defeat the spread of the Necrom Void across the Living Land. But as Daniel begins to exhibit a strange ability to escape overwhelming danger his friends wonder if the Wielder may be the least one they expect! Author is a religious author. W. Somerset Maugham - Ah King Unabridged AudioBook | 2013 | Genre: General Fiction | English | ISBN-13: N/A | MP3 96Kb | Length: 8 hrs and 30 mins | 383.49 MB This is Somerset Maugham's fifth mature short story collection and, as he states in the preface to The Collected Edition in 1936, the last one which contains stories popularly known as "exotic". Originally published in 1933 by Heinemann, "Ah King" is another achievement of Maugham in the genre of the short story that leaves me breathless while reading it. All six stories it contains are perfect examples of exquisite craftsmanship, at least four of them are true masterpieces (and the last two are quite close to perfection even if not as affecting as the other four). They all were published in magazines save "The Book-Bag"; "Footprints in the Jungle" as early as 1927 and all others in 1931, except "Neil Macadam" which appeared on the magazine pages in 1932. Interestingly, the last two stories had different names in magazine form, "The Temptation of Neil Macadam" and "The Right Thing is the Kind Thing" respectively. As almost all such changed titles, the ones that appear in the book are distinctly better.
