Wild Is The Wind (3:26) In high-end audio, less is more when there is less electronic transition and digital processing of a performance during recording and mixing. In the case of this Opus 3 SACD, How Deep Is The Ocean by female jazz vocalist, Yamina, we're told the original DSD128 file had "never been in the PCM domain." The rest is appreciatively more: more processing power by way of a pioneering eight channels of native DSD128 recording from Europe and then mixed in analog format completely. Most delightfully, the entire album was a audience-less live recording in the Jarna Kulturhus' Concert Hall with no post-recording dubbing. The result is a dynamically well-balanced work of art infused with high transparency and complex tonality. Though closely miked and hence cast effectively to the front and over the instrumentalists, Yamina's voice never eclipses her band mates. Small labels like Opus 3 churns out distinct gems occasionally, while many established artists flock to major labels for their marketing muscles. But the mainstream propensity and standardized recording processes often paled in comparison to the individually tailored musical accompaniments and discriminating choices in studio complements prevalent at small, independent labels by new artists. Take Yamina, for example, a newcomer who first garnered a reputation from her debut of four songs in 2013 with the label. In this new album, she sings with a delicate sensibility and yet revealing a remarkably uninhibited style. Hers is one well-crafted, probably even well rehearsed. Nonetheless, the result speaks for itself, and she flaunts her vocalizations diligently and professionally. At one point she conveys care and longing, while sighing carelessness and abandonment moments later. Her band plays with equal proficiency and taste. The interplay between the bass clarinet, cello and double bass in the popular "My Foolish Heart" is brilliant and the mood effective. They also have the wisdom of keeping each track short and sweet, not risking redundant lamentations exercised by so many others that made the "Next" button my favorite one on the remote. Besides the first track of five and a half minute, all other tracks in the album run for a little over three minutes. Nonetheless, good music makes one want to listen to it over and over again. The sheer creativity on display is startling. The album is a first-person take on the events to take place to H. C. Andersen's "Little Mermaid" when the fifteen-year-old ventures beyond her domain into humanity and meets the love of her life. Yamina composed most of the songs in this album, and the liner notes offered in-depth narrative on the state-of-mind of our protagonist. We don't very often come across a work of such concerted efforts and intensity as How Deep Is The Ocean. However, the music it contains is equally delicious and not nearly as ephemeral. Brought to you by the professorial team behind the Golden Age Of American Rock 'n' Roll (plus input from Mick Patrick), Early Girls Vol. 2 continues our exploration of female pop in the early rock era and encompasses solo artists, girl groups and male vocal groups fronted by a female lead. In common with the first volume, the emphasis is on Hot 100 hits, such as Ruby & the Romantics' stylish Our Day Will Come (a U.S. #1), Lesley Gore's cry for independence You Don't Own Me, Peggy Lee's truly timeless Fever (heard here in phenomenal stereo), Dinah Washington's irresistible September In The Rain and The Exciters' torrid pop-soul innocence, Bobby's Girl, a Top 3 US hit in 1962. Incidentally, another goodie, April Stevens' kitsch Teach Me Tiger is being featured in a (UK) TV ad for a well- known cat food, and will probably receive a wider audience than when it first came out (in the States only) in 1959. Ann-Margret's I Just Don't Understand was a particular favorite of John Lennon's and a Beatles' version, recorded for the BBC 1963, was released on one of the Anthology volumes. Rockabilly singer Kent Westberry originally wrote I Just Don't Understand as a harmonica instrumental for his friend Charlie McCoy but nothing came of it. Songwriter Marijohn Wilkin put words to the melody and Ann-Margret cut the song in Nashville, with McCoy on harmonica and Jerry Kennedy playing the first fuzz guitar licks-heard on a hit record. Damita Jo recorded the engaging answer record I'll Save The Last Dance For You, which reached the US Top 30 in the wake of the Drifters #1 Save The Last Dance For Me. Both records utilized the same arranger, Stan Applebaum, who astutely ensured that Jo's version was sufficiently different to merit airplay in its own right. In fact, there are those who prefer it to the Drifters' original. We leave it for you to decide. This sparkling set also contains several significant non-hits, most notably the little known original version of My Boy Lollipop by 16 year old Barbie Gaye, recorded some 7 years prior to Millie Small's million seller. We feel this alone is worth the price of the CD. Songwriter Ellie Greenwich (heard elsewhere on this CD as a member of the Raindrops), was so taken by the record that she named herself Ellie Gaye when she began making records in 1958. Also included is the rare Highland label version of Lonely Blue Nights, Rosie & The Originals' lost follow-up to Angel Baby, and Forgive Me (For Giving You Such a Bad Time) by Babs Tino - surely a record that deserved a better fate than its minuscule chart placing. Falling In Love Is Wonderful In a small group context, Vache's bright and literate trumpet or cornet work gets a little more of the spotlight. This pianoless quartet also showcases the criminally underrated guitarist Joe Puma, the fine-toned bassist Murray Wall, and the veteran drummer Eddie Locke. They collectively epitomize the continuing swing tradition. Vache also fancies himself an entertaining singer in the Jack Sheldon tradition. He goes into sly enunciations with Puma's lustrous chords during "Comes Love," tells a tale of being swamped by in-laws for "I'll Never See Maggie Alone," and obviously not diabetic, relates defiance for diets, glorifying gorging in the swinging "Too Phat Blues." Watch your triglycerides Warren! Puma wrote three of the pieces: the sweet, implied bossa/tango "Bossango" sans drums; the "Cherokee"-based, well-swung "Pow Wow"; and the 12-bar original "See Jim/Jane/Joe/C-Jam Blues," which features the guitarist's gliding chords along with Vache's muted horn and traded fours with Locke's brushed drums and cymbals. The steely-toned Puma makes definitive statements throughout this disc, especially on the forward moving, no-nonsense swinger "At Sundown." It's Vache who takes the bull by the horns for great swing vehicles as "My Shining Hour" and "It's a Blue World," the leader quoting "Seven Come Eleven" and "West End Blues" on the former, dealing a straight flush on the latter. Locke is most inspired and impressive on brushes for "Samantha"; he could write a book, and maybe he should as did Ed Thigpen. There's also the half-speed ballad "Deep in a Dream," the slow ballads "I've Grown Accustomed to Her Face" and the tenderized guitar-bass duo title cut, and the bass-based swinger "Falling in Love Is Wonderful." This is a tasty morsel of swing from experts who do it right. Recommended. ~Michael G.
