Joubert was already a cult figure for house aficionados thanks to "Stand on the Word", a song she wrote and performed with her "Celestial Choir" in 1982 that became a staple of the club scene in New York. It resurfaced as a mysterious bootleg in 2000. Julien, who'd fallen in love with the song, was eager to remix and officialy rerelease it. When he finally reached out to Phyliss, she explained the multitrack tape had been lost. The only thing to do was rerecording it-along with 10 other tracks. Today on French label Elias, Julien and The Joubert Singers are releasing "Stand on the Word" in its original and unique 1982 version (mistakenly named after Larry Levan) and 3 brand new mixes including a fresh Dimitri From Paris remix. The album spent 40 weeks on the US Billboard Pop Albums chart after it's release, garnering the group's first number one album in the U.S. The Heat Is On features singles "Fight the Power (Part 1 & 2)" and "For the Love of You (Part 1 & 2)". 1975's The Heat Is On was the third album that the Isley Brothers recorded with their 3 + 3 lineup, and by that time, the lineup had really perfected its attractive soul/rock sound. The Isleys were providing great R&B long before keyboardist Chris Jasper, bassist Marvin Isley, and the distinctive guitarist Ernie Isley came on board in 1973; nonetheless, the newcomers added a lot to the group and helped it provide some of its best recordings. Marvin's basslines are as funky as it gets, and the Jimi Hendrix-influenced Ernie is a killer guitarist; he would have been perfect for Deep Purple, Blue ??yster Cult, or Judas Priest if the Isley Brothers hadn't kept him busy in the 1970s. One of the 3 + 3 gems that no Isleys fans should be without is The Heat Is On, which is best known for the sweaty funk classic "Fight the Power" and the sexy quiet storm slow jam "For the Love of You." Lead vocalist Ronald Isley is as convincing on the funk scorchers as he is on caressing ballads like "Make Me Say It Again Girl" and "Sensuality." Meanwhile, "Hope You Feel Better Love" is brilliant because it contrasts those two sides of the 3 + 3 lineup -- the verses are sweetly melodic, but the chorus is forceful and explosive. Superb from start to finish, The Heat Is On is among The Isleys' most essential albums. "In a Silent Way"). Clarinetist Don Byron has fashioned a career something akin to a great jazz history lesson. With albums like Plays the Music of Mickey Katz and Bug Music , he demonstrated some of its traditional roots, whereas Music for Six Musicians and You are #6 explored the Latin and Afro-Cuban legacies. Tuskegee Experiments and the frighteningly good live record No Vibe Zone demonstrated where jazz might be going, at least in one person's view. Now, with Ivey-Divey , Byron consolidates it all into a recording that tells of the music's past, present and possible future all in one seventy-five minute stretch. With a core group featuring piano wunderkind Jason Moran and drummer Jack DeJohnette, inarguably one of the most stylistically broad players of the past forty years, Byron pays homage to the similarly bass-less trio of Lester Young, Nat "King" Cole, and Buddy Rich. But this is no mere tribute record; in fact, Byron is quick to point out that "this is less of a repertory record than some of my others, I didn't want this just to be 'Don Byron Plays Lester Young.'" Nor is it. Instead, Byron, Moran and DeJohnette take five pieces commonly associated with Young, and stretch them to their limits. Take "Somebody Loves Me," which is presented in two vastly different takes. Moran's modernistic stride takes both versions to places Cole might only have dreamed of, in particular on the alternate take, where the trio plays loose and free with time in ways that would have been unheard of in the '40s, while still maintaining a reverence that clearly draws a line from the past to the present. Elsewhere Byron contributes four originals that deliver on everything from the absurd Bugs Bunny-influenced funk groove of "Leopold, Leopold!" with bassist Lonnie Plaxico providing some nice contrast to the trio pieces, to the lyrical "Himm (for Our Lord and Kirk Franklin)," a stately duo between Byron and Moran, which extends gospel into the 21st century. And to draw a link between the distant past and the present/future, Byron tackles two pieces associated with Miles Davis, from two different periods. The bluesy "Freddie Freeloader," another trio piece, begins with a cool yet slightly disjointed groove, but soon picks up steam, heading for reaches farther afield. "In a Silent Way," with Plaxico once again sitting in, is an interesting take on the original, with an approach that is more organic yet, when DeJohnette comes in with his take on Tony Williams' signature drum beat, completely on target. Ivey-Divey manages to succeed on many fronts, but mostly it's a consolidation of sorts, one that looks to the future without neglecting the past. First time they met was during the Hot Jazz Spring Festival in CzÄ?stochowa in 2013. The day after Jakub played harmonica as a guest during Neil's concert at the festival. It was the first time the idea of making a duo had appeared during that festival. An English musician Neil performed together with an outstanding Polish jazz pianist, composer and arranger Wojciech Kami??ski. Neil played a concert in 2012 during another Polish jazz festival - Z??ota Tarka in I??awa. After the first concert in CzÄ?stochowa in 2013 the feedback was so good that the organiser decided to invite Neil Wilde again for 11th edition of the event in 2015 as a main star. During the concert Jakub played with Neil. They felt so good playing together. From 2013 up to date Jakub Konieczko spent a few days in England at the beginning of December 2015. Where the repertoire and musical Arrangements were agreed upon. Furthermore, the first rehearsal and recordings were made at Neil's home in Yorkshire and concerts were played. Solo Encore: Valentine Reach up to the CD shelf and pull a handful of Fred Hersch CDS down. You'll find that the pianist has a good thing going with the Village Vanguard. Alive At The Vanguard (Palmetto Records, 2012) a stellar two CD set, and terrific solo set, Alone At the Vanguard (Palmetto Records, 2011), are Hersch's most recent recordings from the legendary venue; and now he and his trio offer up Sunday Night At the Vanguard. Hersch says this is his best trio album. Almost every artist says that about their latest that this one's the best. But he might be right. The vote here would have gone to a studio recording, Whirl (Palmetto Records, 2010), a marvelous in-the-zone effort with this same trio John Hebert on bass, Eric McPherson playing drums until Sunday Night At The Vanguard rolled around. The trio opens with Richard Rodgers' "A Cockeyed Optimist," which is not exactly a familiar tune, in spite of its authorship. But as an opener it works to perfection, with a silvery, raindrop intro that finds a quirky groove that paints an upbeat atmosphere, with a bright melody that sounds like a second cousin to "It Might As Well Be Spring." "Serpentine," a Hersch original, is a wandering slither of a tune, unpredictable and spooky, lovely in its fluid, abstract way; "The Optimum Thing" sparkles; and "Blackwing Palomino," maybe the only jazz tune ever written for a pencil, has the feel of a new jazz standard. Hersch's output has been consistently excellent, but sometimes as on this special Sunday Night the stars align. The trio, from the opening notes of "The Cockeyed Optimist," is locked into and to a telepathic interplay zone playful and eloquent, elegant and assured. The Lennon and McCartney gem, "For No One," has the forlorn desperation of the song's lyrical content. The Beatles' version a masterpiece in its own right didn't take things to this dark of a place. Kenny Wheeler's "Everybody's Song But My Own" rolls in a restless, jittery mode. "The Peacocks," from the pen of Jimmy Rowles, is pensive, lonely. Habibs Habit (4:38) Here's a twist for you -- a Finnish band playing newly composed soul-jazz and post-bop music. The Five Corners ensemble is clearly influenced by the Horace Silver/Lee Morgan/Art Blakey strain of '60s jazz, and even uses recording techniques that are reminiscent of the reel-to-reel two-track era. Saxophonist Timo Lassy and trumpeter Jukka Eskola front this well-heeled jazz band that harkens back to better times for the music, and feels good doing it without resorting to funk or dance music. When you hear tracks like the handclap induced "Skinny Dipping," the delightful soul traipse "Waltz Up," or the echoed "Shake It," it is clear where this music takes its information from. Lassy proves his versatility in stepping away from his John Coltrane influenced side going more for a Hank Mobley/Joe Henderson approach He's especially good playing flute during the excellent "Habib's Habit," a hip modal piece that swings hard, and fully showcases the considerable gifts of pianist Mikael Jakobsson. "Hot Rod" is a spy swing jazz with a basic melody, while "Midnight in Trieste" also sounds like soundtrack music with Lassy's tenor sax, the vibraphone work of guests Arttu Takalo, and Pekka Jaclin on tympani. Most of the material goes beyond the advertised five-piece combo, several cuts feature a string section -- fairly unobtrusive -- and the veteran vocalist Mark Murphy appears on two tracks. He sings "Kerouac Days in Montana," bringing out the '60s cruising California cool factor, while an Oliver Nelson derived "Come & Get Me" combines an orchestral approach blended in with rhythm & blues. Unfortunately, the balance between words and instruments tends to favor the music and not the singers, especially on Okou's feature "Rich in Time," where the strings and horns half-bury his thin vocals. Not only does the music have a retro feel, the production values overall reflect this, a bit muddled and murky, not sounding up to date or digital at all. Not a fault musically though, especially if you would enjoy a fresh take on mainstream jazz looking back in order to move forward. -- Michael G. The lineup features some wonderful work on Fender Rhodes from George Duke - who brings a more soulful, spiritual current to the proceedings than Joe Zawinul did in earlier years - a really commanding presence that hints at his brewing solo fame, and which is a very welcome addition to the core lineup, which also includes Cannon on soprano and alto, and brother Nat on cornet! The performance also fetaures some great guest work from Ernie Watts on tenor and Airto on percussion - who really help round out the long tunes on the set. David Axelrod produced - leaving some nice room for Adderley's key spoken bits - and titles include the 12 minute groover "The Brakes", plus "Oh Babe", "Music You All", and "Capricorn" - plus a sweet take on "Walk Tall", which really has Duke stomping away on the Rhodes! On Out of the Loop, Randy and Michael Brecker stepped up to the plate with their second long-player of the '90s, 20 years after their first foray into the jazz-funk-fusion realm. The album is surprisingly strong, and any fears of a paint-by-numbers attempt to cash in on past glories are quickly dispelled with the opening "Slang," which is reminiscent of Amandla-era Miles. Here, as throughout the disc, Michael's sax solo burns with abandon, while brother Randy's trumpet glides across a tastefully smooth and melodic terrain. "African Skies" has a decidedly Yellowjackets feel, with Michael again turning in a remarkably energetic solo turn. The set-closing "And Then She Wept" features Randy's attractive flugelhorn, as does the Eliane Elias-produced "Secret Heart," where Michael's soprano sax and EWI share the spotlight. "Scrunch" is a funky piece of programmed hip-hop over which the brothers Brecker play a riff similar to those they and the Average White Band delivered in the mid-'70s. Both Randy and the late Michael Brecker went on to make names for themselves in the jazz world after fronting their brotherly band in the '70s, earning the respect of critics and jazz fans alike.
