After doing a modeling course at Lucie Clayton followed by various modelling jobs in and around Bond Street, London, I then took a course at St. James's Secretarial College, joined Senior Secretaries in Bond Street and worked in London for six years as a PA mostly in the entertainment business and I also worked for the Variety Club of Great Britain. After this, I worked for an insurance company in Cape Town, then I returned to London - met my husband to whom I have been married for 37 years and have two wonderful children and we are now proud Grandparents. My musical journey is described under MUSIC together with some photographs. I have sung with various choirs, sung on stage in London fringe theatres during the 1980's. I played as a violinist with the Kensington Symphony Orchestra. I learned piano and then keyboard skills and have been a member of various music keyboard forums where I have increased my knowledge and experience. I have performed live gigs and hope to continue doing so. I launched my two latest albums in April 2016 to add to the one launched in 2012. Vinnie This time out, Susan Weinert has mellowed some since her fiery Crunch Time 1994 release. The excellent guitar playing is still everywhere but things are toned down a few notches leaning more towards straight up jazz with less crunchy-edged fusion. Weinert's acoustic guitar and Martin Weinert's acoustic bass works well in the melding of electric and non-electric moods. Even keyswoman extraordinaire, Rachel Z, chimes in with ivory clean runs and flourishes to augment Weinert's electric guitars and guitar-synth. That jazz standards feel comes through here and there but this release retains Weinert's strong signature sound, slightly overdriven, and sustained warmly. Again that Scott Henderson aura is predominantly present but a certain Frank Gambale lilt and warmth of presence and tone is recurrent. Rachel Z comes and goes in keyboard washes and embellishings, interwoven wonderfully in Susan Weinert's delightful compositions. Hardy Fisch??tter plays the drums with perfection and evident purpose. On "Masters of the Midiverse" we are treated to a delicious Holdsworthian guitar-synth intro that melts into an oh-so-Metheny moment complete with brushes on drums and Rachel Z tinkling away in her butterfly kisses way. Very, very nice.This release is an 11 song delight, track to track, with surprise after surprise of mellow wonder. The final cut, "Vinnie" again treads Holdsworthian waters in the composition's stylings early on but is also seems a subtle tribute to Vinnie Coliauta?, sounding at times like a cut from his recent solo release. Rachel Z gets to stretch a great deal here! For those of you out there looking for great jazz guitar and splendid keys but want less screaming amps yet able to groove too The Bottom Line is just right for you. Singles, despite its generic moniker, does an excellent job illuminating the fact that Bernard Butler and Brett Anderson were far more David Bowie and Mick Ronson than the oft-cited Morrissey/Johnny Marr press quips would have you believe. The group's penchant for neo-glam excess and apocalyptic grandstanding inundated their entire time line, from 1992's "Animal Nitrate" and "Metal Mickey" all the way through to 2002's New Morning, despite the switching out of Butler for the flashier Richard Oakes. While the group's 1993 debut and 1994 follow-up Dog Man Star remain required listening for anyone with even a passing interest in the scene, this collection, paired with 1997's Sci-Fi Lullabies, presents a near perfect picture of one of the late-'90s most underrated acts. She didn't have to look far for encouragement when her love for singing took off. "My father, Jack Oatts, was one of the first jazz educators in Iowa. Music was always around... mostly jazz." Her brothers, Jim and Dick Oatts, are also internationally known and respected jazz artists. Before she took up singing, Sue was blowin' her tenor sax in jazz band and playing a duet with Clark Terry at a jazz festival on her clarinet. "I think playing a horn has had a great influence on my singing. I've tried to approach singing from an instrumental mindset. Space is just as important as sound." After attending college, Sue began a studio career producing and singing jingles and industrials with a voice-over thrown in on occasion. She spent seven years teaching music theory, vocal studio techniques and was the coordinator of the ensemble dept. at McNally Smith College in downtown St. Paul. She's now the Assistant Director of Education at IPR (Institute of Production & Recording) in downtown Minneapolis. She's also a national member of JZVOC and is a board member of the Twin Cities Jazz Society. You'll find her at various night spots in the Twin Cities and beyond singing her cool jazz. About this CD... "I took a lot of time picking out the tunes for this CD. My criteria was threefold; great melodies with lyrics one can relate to today, songs that weren't recorded by every Tom, Dick and Harry, and songs that leant themselves to the makeup of the band. United (5:01) 10. Corcovado (7:17) When it comes to the contemporary trombone artists, there are two schools of exploration. Steve Turre is an advocate of the more melodic school of which elder champions include Curtis Fuller and J.J. Johnson. The more ebullient and bop-inflected side of things has its greatest proponent in Conrad Herwig. No one method should be considered the right path or wrong path to wander down, however Turre is quite outspoken when it comes to opinions on his contemporaries. He is also one whose own recordings have been inconsistent and possibly a bit too scattered in approach over the years. Let the foregoing put into context the release at hand. For this writer, Turre's catalog has its share of gems and an equal share of misfires. Quite simply, Colors for the Masters is easily one of Turre's best releases in years. Without taking anything away from the trombonist, the company he keeps has a lot to do with that. A master of singular authority, pianist Kenny Barron has that perfect combination of fire and melodic grace. And if you can't pick out a Ron Carter bass line in a measure or two you are just not listening hard enough. Turre sagaciously lets the master take a nice share of his own solo spots, each one better than the next. Then there is Jimmy Cobb, still downright swinging at the ripe young age of 87. The first three numbers penned by Turre cover a lot of stylistic ground in a way that recalls a finely-paced club set. "Taylor Made" is one of those slow, tipping tempos that goes down easy, while "Quietude" is a beautiful ballad with a lingering melody. "JoCo Blues" is obviously a blues and to hear these accomplished gentlemen tackle its basic structure speaks to its limitless possibilities. Other originals include "Mellow D for R.C.," one of four pieces to also present Javon Jackson on tenor saxophone. The title tune features a modal vamp set up by Barron that finds Turre speaking in angular lines across the range of his instrument. Rounding out the ten tracks are Monk's "Reflections," J.J. Johnson's "Coffee Pot," Wayne Shorter's "United," and the standard "When Sunny Gets Blue." Of course, no Turre album would be complete without his creative use of conch shells. The closing "Corcovado" provides fodder for that talent with further textures added by percussionist Cyro Baptista. The project stands apart from almost every other jazz/hip-hop collaboration that has preceded it. Hailed by The New York Times as "a state-of-the-art musical thinker with a reputation for sure-footed futurism," and "a quietly dazzling saxophonist," Steve Lehman has built a career creating innovative new music that packs a visceral wallop. His critically-acclaimed octet has previously released arrangements of seminal hip-hop tracks, like Wu-Tang Clan's "Living In the World Today" and Camp Lo's "Luchini." And his professional ties with Meshell Ndegeocello and other pioneering members of the contemporary R&B community date back to 2004: most recently Lehman was a featured soloist on Ndegeocello and Jason Moran's 2014 Blue Note release 'All Rise'. The musical relationships underpinning 'S??l??b??yone' are decades old. HPrizm (AKA High Priest) - a legend of New York's underground hip-hop scene and a founding member of Antipop Consortium - has been one of Lehman's closest collaborators for over a decade. Saxophonist Maciek Lasserre, began studying with Lehman in 2005 and introduced Lehman to the burgeoning Senegalese hip-hop scene in 2010 and began working with Gaston Bandimic - one of Senegal's most distinctive young rap stars - a few years later. The distinctive sound on 'S??l??beyone' is a result of the sonic expertise of noted hip-hop engineer Andrew Wright, a childhood friend of Lehman's since the early 1980s. Wright received a GRAMMY-nomination for his work on Kendrick Lamar's Good Kid, M.A.A.D. Steve Kuhn has excelled in many settings in a career spanning over five decades, but he is at his best leading a trio. Like many top pianists, Kuhn interacts with his musicians rather than relegating them exclusively to the role of accompanists. By the time of this 2011 record date, he had worked with bassist Steve Swallow at various times for over a half-century and with drummer Joey Baron for over 20 years, but this marked their first recording together as a trio. Swallow's sublime lyrical bass is always a welcome addition, while Baron has contributed to recordings by a diverse range of stylists. Kuhn contributed many of the songs, highlighted by his lyrical samba "Adagio" and the glistening, light-hearted "Morning Dew." He also revisits several of his best compositions recorded for previous projects: the lush ballad "Romance," the whispered "Pastorale" with Swallow playing lead in the introduction as Kuhn plays soft chords behind him and Baron's light touch on brushes providing the perfect accent, along with the mellow yet hip "Promises Kept." Swallow's compositions are frequently used by leaders with whom he works. His "Dark Glasses" opens with a mysterious air but shifts quickly into a bright bossa nova. One can only imagine the inspiration for the title to "Good Lookin' Rookie," and this breezy number doesn't disappoint, with Kuhn's driving piano and Swallow's intricate bass solo, along with Baron's drum breaks. Among the native composers whom they champion is Boris Tchaikovsky (1925-1996), whose greatest barrier in the West is the mere coincidence that he shares the same last name as a much better known Russian composer. The liner notes state in clunky English that "the works of Boris Tchaikovsky are among the most notable phenomena in the twentieth century Russian music," and the disc Boris Tchaikovsky: St. Petersburg Chamber Orchestra pulls together some wholly unfamiliar Melodiya recordings of the '70s and '80s to plead his cause. These recordings feature conductor Edward Serov and the St. Petersburg Chamber Orchestra in four works. The room sound, from the Capella Concert Hall in St. Petersburg, is big and boomy, making the harpsichord in the Chamber Symphony rather difficult to hear. Soprano Margarita Miroshnikova sings the song cycle Signs of the Zodiac beautifully, and the work itself is quite attractive, but one wants to hear a recording a bit better than this one, which is hissy and seems to come from a deteriorating master tape. When we get to the Preludes (4) for chamber orchestra, which are all combined on a single track, and the Clarinet Concerto, we are getting the goods, as performance and recording of both works are very nicely done minus some brief moments of bright high end that go over the top. Tchaikovsky's approach to musical form is somewhat episodic, and once in awhile he tends toward a severity of manner reminiscent of his teacher Dmitri Shostakovich. Nevertheless, one would never mistake Tchaikovsky's work for that of his master. Tchaikovsky employs some rather distinctive instrumental effects and makes effective use of short, repetitive rhythmic ideas that capture one's attention. His melodic gift is natural and well developed, and some of his themes are generally reminiscent of European film music, not surprising as Tchaikovsky wrote the music to more than 30 films. Tchaikovsky's Chamber Symphony is also available on Hyperion with the Musica Viva Chamber Orchestra under Alexander Rudin, which is a more crisply played and better-recorded performance.
