Blues for Worm Post-bop alto saxophonist Sherman Irby was born and raised in Tuscaloosa, AL; encouraged by his family to learn music, he initially chose to play the viola, moving on to a series of instruments including guitar and piano before finally settling on the sax as a teen, soon becoming infatuated with jazz. While attending Clark-Atlanta University, Irby studied classical music, but also was a standout in the school's jazz orchestra. Despite graduating with a degree in music education, he refused to enter teaching, instead working a series of dead-end day jobs in order to devote his full energies to performing. After honing his skills playing behind Atlanta area musicians including ex-Art Blakey pianist Johnny O'Neal and trumpeter Eddie Adams, in 1994 Irby accepted a gig performing on a cruise ship; after close to three years of playing at sea, he relocated to New York City, where he made the after-hours jam session scene at the Greenwich Village club Smalls. In time he and his band pianist James Hurt, bassist Eric Revis, and drummer Dana Murray became Smalls regulars, and it was there that Irby was discovered by Blue Note; his first LP for the label, Full Circle, appeared in 1997. After backing the likes of Roy Hargrove, Wynton Marsalis, and Marcus Roberts, he cut his second solo effort, Big Mama's Biscuits, in 1998. I Got It Bad (And That Ain't Good) Green's first-ever fully unaccompanied outing is a knockout -- not a conceptual revolution by any means, but a stylistic triumph and an all-around good time. Like Marcus Roberts, Green is a latter-day master of stride piano, and right off the bat he wows listeners with his skills on "I've Heard That Song Before" and "I Wish You Love" before quieting down with "Someone to Watch Over Me." Green's playing spills over with adventurous, perfectly resolved phrases, crystalline melodies, and controlled dissonance, not to mention a tremendous amount of human spirit. Sticking to standard repertoire (with the exception of the original title track), Green also rummages through other old songs like "Just You, Just Me," "Misty," and "Ain't Misbehavin'," effortlessly creating beauty as he goes. He closes with two Ellington classics, "It Don't Mean a Thing" and "I Got It Bad"; the former is interpolated with Gershwin's "It Ain't Necessarily So" and tagged with a variation on Charlie Parker's "Now's the Time." ~David R. Sunshine Ben is a singer, songwriter, and guitarist hailing from Natchez, MS, a town rich in culture and history in a state rooted in the blues. With musicians on both sides of the family, he was exposed to a wide variety of music at a very early age. At age 10 he began playing trumpet, but found his true passion at age 12 when he was given his first hand-me-down guitar by his aunt. At age 17, Ben found himself playing Bass in the local bars and house parties with a group of friends who called themselves Double Shot. When he turned 18 in 2000, Ben joined the Marine Corps and spent the next 4 years serving at different duty stations across the country as well as one tour in Iraq. His last duty station landed him in eastern North Carolina where he helped form a hard rock band called Absynth. After an honorable discharge, he stayed on the Carolina coast playing at local bars and festivals for several years following. In the late summer of 2006, Ben moved back to Natchez, MS and reunited with former members of Double Shot, Jon Borum and Bob Buseck along with long time friend and drummer, Aaron O'Brien to form In Red Letters. IRL quickly gained popularity in the local bar scene with the release of their first and only album Beautiful World. In 2008, IRL played their biggest show at the Great Mississippi River Balloon Festival for the Friday night balloon glow. In Red Letters disbanded shortly after and Ben began his solo acoustic career in a familiar Natchez music venue the Under the Hill Saloon. It was here that Ben met many travelling musicians and went on the share the stage and studio with artists like Walker Lukens, the Battlefield Band, Grand Child, and the Kodiak Farm Boys, and has played venues in Austin, TX, Nashville, TN, Little Rock, AR, Baton Rouge, LA, and Birmingham, AL. In 2010, Ben recorded a short EP entitled "Friends" at a local studio in Natchez, MS. This EP featured guest appearances by many local musicians and friends he had made in his years playing in the area. He continued to tour the local area until 2014 when he moved to Little Rock, AR. Sugar Raphael Wressnig, based in Austria but frequently on the road, is not your ordinary B-3 organ player. He's actually one of a kind: a young master of the imposing, large instrument who is expansive in his breadth of expertise. He's technically fluent in the blues, in jazz, in soul, and in funk, and he concocts exciting mixed-genre music from his fervid imagination. Versatile Wressnig doesn't flaunt his virtuosic talent for the sake of spectacle but rather backs up his every movement on the keyboards, the drawbar and the bass pedal boards with a fierce emotional commitment. Influenced by royal predecessors like Jimmy Smith, Shirley Scott, Booker T. Jones and Joe Zawinul, Wressnig has taken his music throughout Europe and all over the world, from North Africa and Asia to the Middle East to the United States, Brazil, Chile, Mexico, and the Caribbean. This self-effacing musician, a native of Graz in southeast Austria, has recorded at least 16 feature albums and appeared as a guest on about 30 others. In 2013, 2015 & 2016, he was honored with a nomination for best organ player of the year in Downbeat Magazine. A fine composer with a gift for searching out splendid classic material to rearrange, Wressnig confidently brings out the inherent pyrotechnic power and mightiness of the large B-3 console. Yet he's also comfortable with slowing down the pace and lowering the heat in order to achieve colorful passages of quieter music. Not unlike a musician born and bred in New Orleans, the B-3 player possesses special knowledge about conjuring "groove." As his many fans know so well, this surging or swinging rhythmic "vibe" is vastly important to the success of Wressnig's sui generis music. In the 2010's, Wressnig has solidified his standing as a solo artist. The sheer force of his artistic development has been a wonder to behold, whether encountered on albums or, better yet, at concerts. Live performances are particularly memorable for the happy collision of wild entertainment and focused artistry. In January of 2014 the B-3 groove master made a trip to New Orleans, literally and spiritually, to cook some Gumbo. Soul Gumbo, that is. Dearly Beloved Ranee Lee has been Canada's most enjoyable, reliable jazz singer for many decades running, and shows no signs of slowing down over nearly a dozen albums. This live effort at the nightclub Upstairs in Montreal, Quebec, shows Lee still loves standards done her way, and adds a few tunes with a more contemporary tag placed on them. Her voice still holds the perfect tonal values of her idol Sarah Vaughan, shaded with soulful phrasings closely linked to Ernestine Anderson. But Lee has always been her own woman in personalizing whatever song she sings with only a hint of drama, bravado, or vibrato. She's as strait-laced a singer in jazz as anyone worldwide, and swings with the best alongside her band of local heroes, including her husband/guitarist Richard Ring. When Lee sings "In Love in Vain," you know the spirit of Vaughan is present and accounted for, while her take on "Four" is a bit more elongated, not as clipped as the staccato notes of the melody line. Her unusual choice of Pat Metheny's "A Crooked Road" contrasts in an underground, mysterious manner unlike the other selections, while her lone original, "The Storm," is a blues that only foreshadows the clouds, rain, and thunder. Ring's guitar provides supple support, but is much more resonant during "Beautiful Love," showing a dexterity that perhaps should be showcased on his own date. It's somewhat criminal that Ranee Lee is not ranked among the best jazz singers in the world by polls and record sales, but Lives Upstairs proves beyond a doubt she belongs in that upper echelon. ~Michael G.
