You Don't Love Me (3:00) This lesser-known cult favorite is not only one of the most musically ambitious outings of Del Shannon's career, but also one of his most all-around consistent albums. The Further Adventures of Charles Westover finds Shannon embracing psychedelia in a personalized way: Instead of imitating the whimsy of Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band or the creepy freak-outs of Their Satanic Majesties Request, he uses the cinematic quality of psychedelic pop to provide a vivid backdrop for his songwriting. For instance, "Silver Birch" uses a swirling mass of horns and densely layered backing vocals to add a haunting quality to its tale of an abandoned bride, and "Color Flashing Hair" uses vertiginous string motifs and churning horns to re-create the feelings of obsessive love described in the lyrics. Shannon's work on this album also differs from usual psychedelic fare because it mixes some earthier textures into it's sonic brew: "Be My Friend" enhances its lusty plea for feminine companionship with wailing harmonica and gospel-tinged female backing vocals and "River Cool" laces its swinging beat with some deliciously soulful organ licks. The overall effect is stunning, managing to fit the tag of psychedelic pop but still retaining the haunting, emotional kind of songwriting that distinguished Del Shannon's music. BGO's reissue of The Further Adventures of Charles Westover adds eight bonus tracks that range from the mid-'60s to the mid-'80s. This material is a loose grab bag of styles that covers everything from up-tempo pop ("She") to pure country music ("In My Arms Again"), but each track is worth a listen and a few of them are truly stellar. The best is a cathartically emotional reading of "What's a Matter Baby" that marries a searing vocal from Shannon to a glorious backing track that builds from simple acoustic strumming into a Spector-esque Wall of Sound driven by surging horns. Mandacaru (10:01) Quarteto Brasil is made up of four veteran Brazilian musicians, with a fifth as an added guest on several tracks. Led by pianist Cristovao Bastos, who also wrote and arranged most of the compositions played on the session, the group includes saxophonist Ze Canuto (who plays soprano and alto), bassist Bororo (listed as an acoustic bassist, though it sounds like he's using an electric bass), drummer Jurim Moreira and percussionist Marcalzinho. This disc is not typical bossa nova, as the musicians are very forward thinking and take plenty of chances, especially in Bastos' engaging "Subdindo a Rocinha." The one selection written by a North American is Dave Brubeck's early-'60s piece "Bossa Nova U.S.A." which the band plays in a rather sensual, subdued fashion, a good bit slower that its composer, featuring Canuto's magical soprano sax and an inspired solo by the leader. Founded in the Galilee region of Israel by Elam Rotem, the ensemble is currently based in Basel-Switzerland, where its members undertook advanced studies at the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis. The core of the ensemble includes countertenor, tenor and bass singers, who perform either a-cappella or together with period instruments such as Theorbo and Harpsichord. In his publications, Luzzasco Luzzaschi (c. 1545-1607) presents himself, rather modestly as the Organist of the Serene Highness Duke of Ferrara. Accordingly, Luzzaschis reputation today is similarly modest; he is known, if at all, thanks only to the music he composed for the Concerto delle Dame an ensemble of virtuoso female singers at the dEste court in Ferrara. And yet, when his entire oeuvre is explored, one discovers that his music and influence are greater than could have been imagined. In fact, Luzzaschi was both musically and historically one of the central musical figures of the late Renaissance. This recording presents a broad picture of Luzzaschis oeuvre, selecting works in various genres, performed in historically informed settings with appropriate performance practices. While pieces for the Concerto delle Dame are included, one of the intentions of Profeti della Quinta is to highlight the fact that the rest of Luzzaschis output stands equally alongside these compositions. This was released on the Jigsaw label. Editorial Reviews: 2016 release. A simply beautiful and pure janglepop song in the vein of Choo Choo Train or the first Posies album may start off the record, but soon afterwards you realize that this French band's sound is much more varied than that. Popincourt is not only the name of the band, but also the pseudonym of it's leader, who receives assistance from Herve Bouetard (Bertrand Burgalat's drummer) and (perhaps not coincidentally) Ken Stringfellow on bass, among others. Popincourt himself is admittedly very influenced by the Style Council (though my ears also hear a close similarity to Eggstone), with his songs exhibiting a classy sound filled with trumpets, subtle organs, female backing vocals and jazzy guitar chords. During the late Fifties and early Sixties in the US the saxophone of Plas Johnson was a ubiquitous sound on radio. Known as the horn behind the hits, he was famous as the tenor sax on the celebrated 1963 Pink Panther main theme recording. Born near New Orleans, he moved to the west coast at a very young age and there launched a career that made him one of the most sought-after studio musicians on the Los Angeles scene, with a great reputation built largely on his remarkable ability to play any style of music with taste and restraint. The two Capitol albums here epitomize this. On This Must Be the Plas! (1959), he is accompanied by three small groups with slight personnel changes, and although Plas is the main voiceon tenor, baritone and alto saxeverybody else in the group has his own solo space. Mood for the Blues (1960) features Plas on tenor with strings and rhythm, the tasteful arrangements of Gerald Wilson and Ren?? Hall forming a fine background for his solo work. Also included here is his first single for Capitol, including his smash hit The Big Twist and Come Rain or Come Shine. His warm tone and naturally easy style is as greatly admired by other musicians as it is by jazz and pop music fans. Born in Lettsworth, Louisiana, Guy played with the harmonica player Raful Neal for ten years in the Baton Rouge area. He relocated to Chicago in 1969, where he joined his brother's band, at the time when his brother was becoming known as an innovator in blues guitar. The brothers collaborated extensively with Junior Wells in the 1970s. Guy recorded a number of albums under his own name in the 1980s and 1990s, branching out into soul and funk. He can be seen in his self-described hippie phase in the film Festival Express, in which the Guy band tours southern Canada by train in 1970 with the Grateful Dead, Janis Joplin and the Band. Guy worked with Maurice John Vaughn in 1979, notably converting him into a blues musician. If its core concept - a piano led by a drummer - was unorthodox, the group was nonetheless influential, and the recordings provide an excellent environment for appreciating the distinctive writing and playing of John Taylor. The British pianist was the Erskine Trio's primary composer, with the drummer-leader and bassist Danielsson also contributing pieces and the repertoire topped up with tunes by Vince Mendoza and Kenny Wheeler. Ending V Recorded in 1991, this disc gorgeously assembles two of the most lyric "voices" on one CD, Canadian pianist Paul Bley and Italian chanteuse Tiziana Ghiglioni, performing solo and duet in a series of originals and standards. Of the 11 tunes, Bley composed six, all of which are piano solos, which serve as preludes or postludes --depending on your point of view -- to the duets on the standards by Kern, Gershwin, Dorothy Fields/Jimmy McHugh, etc. Bley's compositions are all lyric songs, or songs without lyrics that follow a conventional form and are adorned by his usual lush pointillism. From "Beginning" to "Clime" to "Soulful," Bley digs very deep for the melodic invention only he can put across, stringing lines of arpeggios next to open mode chords and tying them together in a chromaticism of his own design. His triplets give way to staggered ninths and flatted fifths before working themselves out in a lyric line that is as complex as it is stunningly beautiful. As for the duets with Ghiglioni, she proves Bley's perfect foil -- especially on tunes like Gershwin and Kern's "Long Ago and Far Away." Ghiglioni allows the song to come through her voice; she has no need to "make it her own" by taming or twisting it to fit her oracular talent. She allows Bley to bring her the changes and she takes the melody elegantly, letting it come from her mouth as a song, not a vehicle for vocal stylishness. The same goes for "Lover Man," one of the finest versions ever recorded: As she allows the lyric to drip from her emotions and not vice versa, Bley picks it all up and polishes the tune, as the singing needs no assistance. The final duet, "The More I See You," is a revelation in symbiotic musicianship. Ghiglioni just barely anti[beeep]tes Bley's line as he holds back a fraction of a second to change the shape of his chord voicing to highlight the depth and dimension in Ghiglioni's singing. The song becomes not a sentimental piece of jazz' nostalgic past, but a living, breathing hymn to longing.
