To a wide audience he is known as the director of Bach Collegium Japan, and the moving force behind the ensemble's acclaimed recordings of Bach's complete sacred cantatas. Perhaps less well known is that he began his career - at the age of 12! - playing the organ at church services in Kobe, where he was born. Suzuki has remained true to the organ throughout his life, and for BIS he has previously recorded Bach's German Organ Mass, as well as programmes of Buxtehude and Sweelinck. He here appears on a disc which combines some of Bach's best-loved works for the instrument, including the D minor Toccata and Fugue, the Partitas on 'O Gott, du frommer Gott', BWV 767, the Canonic Variations, BWVâ??769, and the celebrated Prelude and Fugue in E minor, BWVâ??548. Russian pianist Mark Taratushkin combines early works of two of the most important composers of the first half of the 20th century on this CD. These six works by Sergei Prokofiev and B??la Bart??k illustrate the evolutionary thinking and the use of new forms and ideas. Here all the methods of the masterful composers are clearly seen: the forms and artistic themes, which will later receive their continuation in operas, symphonies, concerts and other great works. The beautiful "Four Etudes, Op. 2" by Sergei Prokofiev are filled with grotesque fantasies, jaunty lyrics and stinging irony. The "Sarcasms" are an expression of bitter smile and scornful irony of the young composer, a slap to social sensibility of his time. A completely different aspect shows the miniature cycle "Visions fugitives", twenty small pieces, different in character and mood: Lyricism, dazzling humor, and tenderness; sorrow, angst, disquiet and determination - the composer used the entire palette of musical colors to reflect his perceptions of the world during this complex period of turbulent change. B??la Bart??k's "Three Etudes, Op. 18" are some of the most outstanding examples of the composer's attempt to work out his own piano style which strictly rejected the standards of romantic and impressionistic doctrines. Instead of folkloric citations or borrowings, which are characteristic of Bartok's work on the whole, there is an accumulation of rhythmical and structural elements. The musical language is extraordinarily complicated and individualistic. In the multilayered structure, polyrhythm and use of diverse modes, it displays the composer's striving to leave the traditional understanding of harmony in favor of new means of musical expression. In the "Improvisations on Hungarian Peasant Songs" folkloric themes are boldly interpreted by the composer. Traditional peasant songs are elaborated in an exaggeratedly pictorial fashion. The program cycle "Outdoors" paints five landscapes in which the composer portrays nature following the Cubists in their sharply dissonant style. Bart??k conveys a lively sensation of the space in which one hears the drumming, the bagpipes, the sounds of the water, the rustling of the forest, the cry of the birds and the folk songs. Their parallels are not so much technical or in their harmonic language, but in their temperament; both sonatas are profoundly dark and introspective. Add to this at-times somber program the works of Nicolas Bacri (who, incidentally, was born in the same year that the Britten sonata received its premiere), and listeners get a full set of ominous, pensive compositions. The ray of light among all this heaviness is cellist Marie Hallynck and her very successful collaboration with pianist C??dric Tiberghien. Her playing is technically brilliant and extremely refined, allowing her to focus her energies on the musical content of these works rather than their sometimes lofty technical demands. Beginning with the Debussy, Hallynck uses a seemingly inexhaustible array of dynamics, rubato, and tone colors to lend this late work an almost improvisatory characteristic. Her Britten is enthusiastic and succeeds in conveying the wryness Britten had intended. The works of Nicolas Bacri, perhaps less known to most listeners, are heavily influenced by Britten, a fact Hallynck clearly conveys in her playing. His work Hasretim ('My Longing') is a multi-media exploration of musical roots, and a musical search for cultural identity. In 2009, Marc Sinan embarked on an unusual journey, its route leading from the Black Sea coast, where his grandparents lived, to the Armenian border. En route he located and filmed traditional musicians, players whose craft is dying today, capturing a music that speaks of restlessness and temperament, and bears the footprints of Anatolia's cultural and ethnic diversity. Sinan's musical findings are integrated into his own contemporary music for mixed ensemble (orchestrated and arranged by Andrea Molino) with Turkish and Armenian guests. Premiered as a "musical installation for orchestra and video documents", Hasretim received an award from the German UNESCO Commission in 2011. The present CD/DVD package incorporates two full-length (audio and DVD) performances of Hasretim, plus the field recordings made by Marc Sinan and Dresdner Sinfoniker artistic director Markus Rindt on their journey, which open a window on a fascinating musical world. Unlike Bob Dylan, whose songbook the singer had so expressively reimagined on Every Grain of Sand, Elvis Presley was never himself a composer, depending instead entirely on professional publishers for his material, much of it originally chosen for its commercial prospects; however, even at its worst - the soundtracks to the crap cookie-cutter movies the King made in the '60s usually come to mind here - his recorded output had a certain consistency to it. Instead you are treated to a phenomenally responsive singer finding her way into and breathing the oxygen of forgotten stories, while, in the process, refitting them to say something real and useful, something personal about your world and about the one long past. In a sense, you are hearing these songs - many of them now considered classics (pop/rock standards, if such things exist) - for the first time. Worlds of passion and pain, discovery and dislocation exist in these songs. They are so entirely reinvented by Jungr, her brilliant arrangers Adrian York and Jonathan Cooper, and producer Calum Malcolm that the prevailing mood of the album is transformed into a mosaic, a complex map of one woman's fully lived life, from the dizzy, tender love letters of expectation to the lonesome heartbreak hotels that litter the highways of life, and all the attendant reveries, roadblocks, and realizations along the way, until she arrives at the gospel of her - your - existence, an exultant take on one of Presley's own favorite Baptist hymns, Thomas A. Dorsey's "Peace in the Valley." Jungr may have been "Looking for Elvis," as she sings in the album's sole self-written original, but she found herself. And in that discovery, there is a certain gesture of sublime benevolence toward the listener. Love Me Tender is an autobiography of shared memory, but more than that it is a primer to how people refashion that memory to ascertain and navigate their own trajectories. San Agustin Venezuela's resident musical maniacs and former Latin Grammy nominees are back with covers of seventeen tunes they knew and loved during their teen years, a few of which, such as "Miss Venezuela," complete with samples of a simpering beauty queen, actually sound strangely familiar. Their rampant satirical stance and penchant for studio wizardry still firmly in place, they wallow in neo-nostalgia, running amok in Caracas Oldieville, abetted by producer DJ Dimitri of Paris and their own polymorphous tendencies. Nods to Isaac Hayes, Nigerian superstar Fela Kuti, sixties bossa nova as sanitized via the American west coast, P-Funk, Santana, and even The Fifth Dimension do a crazed buck-and-wing around hip-hop, lounge and latter-day dance club machinations. The contexts shift so rapidly that if the listener weren't so busy boogying, vertigo might well set in. By the third track, the flagrantly over-ripe, increasingly bizarre sets of cross-pollinations begin to seem almost normal, as a kind of sonic Stockholm Syndrome sets in.
