Pure Imagination (1:45) Vocalist Ashleigh Smith, winner of the 2014 Sarah Vaughan International Jazz Vocals Competition, will release her Concord Records debut album, Sunkissed, on August 26. The album showcases a wide range of styles and influences, from Latin and bossa-nova to R&B and soul jazz. Smith co-wrote five of its 10 tracks. The other five tracks include interpretations of compositions by artists such as The Beatles and Hall & Oates, as well as a version of "Pure Imagination" from the soundtrack of the 1971 film Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory. Sunkissed features Smith playing alongside musicians who were fellow classmates of hers at the University of North Texas, where she studied jazz. Her band includes bassist Nigel Rivers and guitarist Joel Cross. "I wanted people who have already been an integral part of my musical development," explained Smith in a press release. "They all played a big part into the making of who I am as a musician. Brown (synthesizer). Dave Sereny crossed my way first time with his fantastic collection Jazz Room (2004), a five-CD series (Latin Jazz, Classic Jazz, Vocal Jazz, Jazz Sampler, Smooth Jazz). This collection was released by Dave Sereny's label Groove United which was established by Dave and his brother Mike Sereny in 1996. I had the opportunity and pleasure to review these recordings in the past. Toronto based Sereny was a multiple nominee at the 2006 Canadian Smooth Jazz Awards. The Canadians really support their musicians. He performed with jazz and rock greats such as Kenwood Denar, Ritchie Cole, Jose Feliciano, Alex Lifeson of Rush, Rex Smith and Mark Whitfield. The album starts with a cover of Give It To Me Baby. This essential classic Funk song was one of the greatest hits Rick James had and was originally released on his million-selling album Street Songs (1981). Dave's interpretation is elegant and smoothes out the vicious guitar tone of the original still keeping it cool and vibrant. Funkified is a creation of Darren Rahn, that means he has written the song, made the awesome horn arrangement and also played the additional wah guitar. Darren has just released his sax album Once In A Lifetime (2005). Funk is en vogue now and this track brings it on the top. Darren is also known for his fantastic remakes of classics for Wayman Tisdale. Do For Love was penned by Dave. Chicago native Lemoyne Alexander levels the tune up to a seductive modern song with the soulful vocals of Canadian / Hungarian song bird Delilah and his special keyboard loops. The song Take This Ride is featuring N'Dea Davenport and Ladybug Mecca. N'Dea is a singer best known for her role in the Brand New Heavies, a British funk/R&B band, a group responsible for the Acid Jazz wave in the early 90s. Ladybug Mecca is known by her rap work with Digable Planet. Two power women and Dave's dream guitar revives the Acid Jazz wave. On Fly Away Dave's elder brother Mike adds roaring organ grooves to Dave's eclectic guitar sound while Delilah waves in her beautiful siren vocals. Delilah came in contact with Dave by her brother Paul Lakatos, a guitar virtuoso, who is performing in Toronto's jazz clubs. Lucy is featuring jazz legend Bob James on piano. Written by Omar Edwards, who performs synth and keys on this tune, this tune needs some second spins to develop in your mind. Bass player Nathan Watts wrote Keep Goin'. He is Stevie Wonder's bassist since 33 years and played on most of Stevie's albums since 1975. His goal is to finally put out a solo CD; it will be a combination of vocal tunes and bass-heavy instrumentals. Keep this tune in mind and you can await a really good album. On This Time audience can listen to the signature bass sound of Wayman Tisdale. Wayman plays a melodic bass accompanying Dave's guitar journey in his own style. St. Tropez is a chic city in southern France, located on the French Riviera. Popular for its famous and wealthy guests, it is often called the Marbella of France. Dave perfectly catches the glamour of this town in his song. Luxury of Love is featuring the lucid sax of Warren Hill. Lucubration and melody or improvisation and chaos that are the poles between which musicians are drawn. This song is certainly placed at the pole of melody, mellow and smooth like a lullaby. Victor George Street was written by Dave under the influence of George Benson, the lead melody of the song has this classic attraction which tickles my brain activity. Closer of this album is the seductive Blueberry Groove. Dave has a talent for hooking melodies. With keyboardist Lemoyne Alexander on his side it's easy to translate notes in action. Fine flowing modal music from Mine and his crew (a crack team of the usual j-jazz suspects) from back in '74. This was one of Mine's first outings after switching from alto to tenor and definitely one of his best ever. Also one of the first albums on the very righteous East Wind label. The stately lyrical second track (by Kikuchi) is a standout here, sandwiched between the two high-power numbers penned by Mine. The concept for the cover art is questionable (red gloop as a representation of chaos? Or maybe the art director used this image because s/he was clean out of chaos?). But when it comes to the music, there's nothing lacking here whatsoever! She started her musical studies in a music preschool, after that came a music primary school and a music school. She sang in a choir and she learned to play the piano. Her parents, being fond of music, made her meet jazz music at a very young age. When she was 15 years old, she started to study jazz singing in Szeged at the HAMMIDO music school. Her teacher was Adrienn Szab??. At this time she started to sing on stage. After High-School in 2001 she won the first prize in the solo voice category of the SONY MUSIC & BRAVO Talent Competition. Until 2005 she studied at the jazz department of the Dr. Lauschmann Gyula Collage of Jazz Music in Sz??kesfeh??rv??r. Her teachers were Kriszta Pocsai, Barnab??s P??ly and No??mi Kiss. Then she sang with many great musicians and bands. In 2003 she was among the best 16 singers of the Hungarian TV2 Megaszt??r 1. competition, the Hungarian version of Pop Idol. Since 2004 she has been the singer of the famous Hungarian jazz band, Elemer Balazs Group. She sings with the great jazz singer, Gabor Winand. They have given many successfull concerts at numerous festivals in Hungary, Austria, Slovakia, the Czech Republic, Germany, Serbia, Transylvania, Italy, Norway, Scotland and England. Their first collective album, titled Refracting Sounds won the Fonogram Award and thus became the "Hungarian Jazz Album Of The Year" in 2005. In 2007 they released their album, entitled "Early Music", in which baroque music is mixed with jazz. In the winter of 2009 they released their latest album, entitled "Memories", wich was nominee the Fonogram Award "Hungarian Jazz Album Of The Year" in 2010. Klara contributed with background vocals to many singers' albums and concerts (Tisza Bea, Mujahid Zolt??n, R??cz Gergo, Dobr??dy ?kos, Zentai M??rk, Iv??n, V??lgyi Zsuzsi, Bon-Bon.). A finalist in the Voicingers International Singers Competition and semi-finalist in the Brussels Young Jazz Singers Vocal Competition, Manders' "irrepressible style" makes her an "in demand musician both as a bandleader and as a sideman." She lent her voice to Amsterdam-based saxophonist Maarten Ornsteins' DASH!, which featured artists such as Oene van Geel and Morris Kliphuis. Falling into the second category, G Force is a fairly decent urban contemporary release that clearly benefits from the input of Kashif (who serves as executive producer). Kashif was hot at the time, and the R&B singer/producer/songwriter had been burning up the charts with hits by Evelyn "Champagne" King, George Benson, Howard Johnson and himself. Kashif's stamp is all over this sleek album; you can hear it on both the tunes with R&B vocals ("Hi, How Ya Doin'" and "Do Me Right") and groove-oriented instrumentals like "I've Been Missin' You" and "I Wanna Be Yours." G Force, Kenny G's second album, is a long way from the adventurous fusion Kenny G had recorded with Lorber, and the sax solos he was taking in 1983 were hardly breathtaking. But thanks to Kashif's parti[beeep]tion, G Force is an enjoyable, R&B-oriented date and is probably the best album he did as a leader (which isn't saying a lot, considering how boring most of his subsequent projects would be). Based on the catchy, slightly cheeky lead-off single "Sleepover," one might expect an album of Avril Lavigne-style pop-punk. While there is a bit of that energy underpinning the album, Stewart primarily leans toward slick, pop-oriented productions that highlight her bold, highly resonant vocals. Cuts like the sexy "Need U2B Mine," the gospel-tinged "With Your Love," and the hip-hop-infused "16 Dollars," featuring rapper Brooke Candy, bring to mind the girl group R&B of Destiny's Child. Similarly, tracks like the pulsing, synth-heavy "Jonah" and the funky "In Love with a Boy" find Stewart splitting the difference between the '80s-style synth-pop of La Roux and the confidant '90s R&B of Toni Braxton. Elsewhere, Stewart delves into '60s-influenced pop balladry on "Everything I Do Is Wrong," and swings for the fences on the Celine Dion-esque power ballad "Gold Digger." One gets the sense that being so young, Stewart is still working through her influences and figuring out where she fits in the pop landscape. There's no escaping the fact that her debut is a big, commercial pop production. The session consists of the trumpeter's compositions plus three by Joni Mitchell. Douglas feels that the words, music, and meaning of Mitchell's songs provide an excellent starting place for his ensemble to improvise in jazz. Like all forms of art, the result is a session that includes drama, variety, and a story that attaches different meanings to each viewer or listener. Douglas' music evolves from the hard bop idiom, with special care given to the presentation of his unique ideas. The trumpeter uses a soft attack, round tone, fluid articulation, and unlimited imagination to honor beauty in various forms. Pianist Bill Carrothers is adventuresome in his approach and complements the trumpeter well. Genus and Hart provide a variety of colors to match Douglas' limitless palette. Joni Mitchell's "Roses Blue" is performed up-tempo and with a subtle intensity that moves in deliberate strides. The singer's "My Old Man" and "The Same Situation" are presented with their melodies intact; however, the quartet delivers with its own interpretation that excites the listener's imagination. The trumpeter's compositions represent some of his best work. His lovely waltz "First Frost" provides space for Douglas, Carrothers, and Genus to offer individual solos that sing out like a vocalist's melodies. "Movement" steps close to the outer fringe edges of the modern mainstream in jazz. Douglas turns up the heat and the other members of the quartet provide an appropriate wall of sound. Their wall is like a tapestry, which has many interesting colors and patterns available for study.
