In addition to holding down the venue's headlining spot, Katz turned the caf?? into an informal training ground for musicians, inviting both veteran and up-and-coming artists to play and collaborate nightly. Tied (3:00) A jazz- and pop-influenced singer/songwriter, Britain's Julia Fordham is an eclectic artist with a loyal cult following. A native of Portsmouth, England, Fordham performed folk music in local clubs, sang with the National Youth Jazz Orchestra, and worked as member of Mari Wilson's backing troupe the Wilsations before embarking on her solo career. In 1988, Fordham released her eponymously titled debut, Julia Fordham, which showed off her low, smoky jazz bar, dulcet voice and contained four singles: "The Comfort of Strangers," "Woman of the 80's," her first hit "Happy Ever After," and "Where Does the Time Go." The following year, Porcelain consolidated her presence as a leading album artist. Produced by Hugh Padgham, Grant Mitchell, and Fordham herself, standout tracks include "Lock and Key"; tonally warm, her vocal delivery was likened to Joni Mitchell's, with whom she'd be further linked in years to come). Porcelain guested Manu Katche and Pino Palladino among its high-caliber lineup. More bittersweet tales of hopelessness in the art of relationships were outlined in 1991's Swept, which included the excellent "I Thought It Was You" as well as "(Love Moves In) Mysterious Ways." Also featured in the film The Butcher's Wife, "(Love Moves In) Mysterious Ways" climbed to number 19, making it her biggest U.K. hit to date. Relocating to the States, Fordham released her fourth studio album, the Larry Klein-produced Falling Forward in 1994. In 1997, she returned with East West, which featured production from Canadian guitarist Michael Brook. A solid greatest-hits compilation was released in 1999 and her last contractual effort for Virgin, the aptly titled Collection, included updated versions of "Happy Ever After" and "Where Does the Time Go" as well as "Killing Me Slowly" from East West. A new deal with Division One/Atlantic prevailed in time for the 2002 release of her sixth studio album, the Klein-produced Concrete Love. Fordham then moved to the Vanguard label for 2004's That's Life and the live CD/DVD combo, That's Live, in 2005. Inspired by the birth of her daughter, Fordham next released the EP Baby Love in 2007. The jazz-influenced China Blue, featuring a duet with Michael McDonald, followed in 2008. Two years later, she teamed with actor and pianist Paul Reiser for the album Unusual Suspects. Just One Of Those Things Joyce Breach is a fine cabaret singer with a deep voice who mostly sings songs fairly straightforwardly. This is one of her most jazz-oriented releases, not because she starts improvising any more than normal, but due to her strong sidemen: trombonist Bob Havens, clarinetist Bobby Gordon, pianist Keith Ingham, bassist Bob Haggart and drummer Hal Smith (who is the leader of the backup quintet). Most of the selections are either from the swing era or played in that style, and there are plenty of short solos from Havens and Gordon. Very Early (4:21) Basement Blues is the third Origin Records CD offering from the John Stowell/Michael Zilber Quartet, following Shot Through With Beauty (2009) and Live Beauty, (2013). Guitarist Stowell's approach is distinctive-silvery chords and pinprick single notes that reverberate from the rafters. Saxophonist Zilber is a flawless, soulful technician on soprano and tenor saxophones. Bassist John Shifflett and drummer Jason Lewis are perfection in the supportive rhythm rolls. It all comes together in a cohesive set that is probing and cerebral and laid-back approachable. The set features two classics: Jerome Kern's "Nobody Else but Me" and the closer, pianist Bill Evans' "Very Early." All other tunes are originals from the pens of Stowell or Zilber, with one group-written composition, "Later that Night," that-with such a groove-doesn't sound like a free improvisation, though it may well be. The disc's title tune, written by Zilber, opens the set on a reflective note. Zilber is exquisite on soprano horn, and he adds some almost subliminal piano to the rhythm, a subtle and beautiful sparkle behind Stowell's piquant solo. Jerome Kern's "Nobody Else But Me" is given a playful turn, and "Stowell In Heart," from Zilber's pen, is introspective, wandering, lovely, a somewhat amorphous type of tune that could be mistaken for a Wayne Shorter composition. Stowell's "Violin Memory" features Zilber putting out a robust and gritty sound on tenor sax to contrast with Stowell's effortless grace. When asked to name musicians they're inspired by, the band cites legends such as Emmylou Harris, Doc Watson, Gram Parsons, John Prine and Townes Van Zandt, but also current artists Gillian Welch, Kacey Musgraves, Ryan Adams, Sam Outlaw and Jason Isbell. In addition to most (but not all) of Chicago Line's best songs, the listener gets treated to a live version of Room To Move, complete with percussion, a rousing version of All For Your Love which dates from the days of Mayall's Bluesbreakers and a couple of bluesy tunes I have not heard before. The highlight of the album is Tears Came Rolling Down, one of the masterpieces from Chicago Line. On the standard "Just One of Those Things," Calderazzo displays a surprisingly strong stride-style left hand, while the meditative "Chopin" showcases his grasp of the classical tradition. "Bri's Dance" and "The Legend of Dan" reveal his ease with Latin tempos and waltzes. The late Kenny Kirkland, Calderazzo's predecessor in Marsalis's quartet, wrote the wistful ballad "Dienda"--also recorded by Sting on All This Time. We Used To Dance Joel Frahm is a big, gentle looking man with a big, warm sound on the tenor saxophone. On We Used To Dance, he reunites with pianist Kenny Barron, with whom Frahm studied at the Rutgers University jazz program. Frahm has also enlisted the services of the rest of the rhythm section that contributed so much to the later recordings of Stan Getz: bassist Rufus Reid and drummer Victor Lewis. The result is a solid disc of outstanding music. Frahm can play, and shows it on all ten tracks, including two well-known standards ("Spring Can Really Hang You Up the Most" and "My Ideal"), two of Barron's fine compositions ("Joanne Julia" and "Song for Abdullah") and six Frahm originals. "Bob's Blues" belies Frahms's contention in the liner notes that his originals are "another baby step in my continuing attempts to write music." This fine piece is far more than that, evoking an irresistible late night vibe. As he does throughout the disc, Barron quickly establishes that he is not simply sitting in to comp behind a former student; he solos beautifully, connecting with Frahm in a sustaining musical partnership. On Frahm's aptly titled "Jobimiola," Lewis opens and the band jumps into a swinging Brazilian-inflected romp. Frahm is clearly enjoying himself as he quotes "You and the Night and the Music," then heads back towards more Tom Jobim-like riffs. Lewis and Reid create a compelling context for Frahm's entrance to "Song for Abdullah." Throughout the recording, the bassist and drummer are consistently tasteful and musical, whether soloing or keeping time behind Frahm and Barron. "Spring Can Really Hang You Up the Most" highlights Frahm's gorgeous tone on the tenor. In his interplay with Barron he establishes clearly that this is far more than a recital by teacher and graduate. That video has gone around the world a few times, getting millions of views and being re-posted in Japan, Russia and all over Europe. It was just a phenomenal thing that happened. I was getting calls from America s Got Talent and movie people reaching out. I think people loved the combination: Here is a woman who looks like somebodys mom, and she is playing like this. What I remember most was that it was 90 degrees that day, so I was wearing the coolest dress I had. The viral phenomenon ironically happened while Connor herself has been off the road, being a mom and playing club residencies, to the tune of 200 local gigs a year. But a studio return was long overdue and Six String Stories, her first album in a dozen years. The disc s ten tracks all but two written by her with band-mate Marion Lance Lewis-- include tastes of gospel, rock, soul and funk; all with the gutsy singing and heartfelt playing that have always been her trademarks. Connor admits that it took some coaxing to get her back into the studio. I have always been a live musician and going into the studio used to be a daunting, scary thing. But you know what, the older I get the more comfortable I am with myself. I don t listen to the outside voices in my head, I just go with it. That sense of self-determination extends to tracks like the empowering It s a Woman s Way which gives her daughter a little romantic advice. She broke up with her first boyfriend before the prom, so I wrote that for her. Then there s the album s other cover, Jill Scott s Golden, which Connor makes her own with a forceful spoken part. It s about a woman taking control of her life, and praising the creator for giving it to her. I think the gift of approaching middle age is that you know who you are and become confident in yourself. For me that s been a real journey, and a lot of it is about your own attitude. At the other extreme are guitar-slinging tracks like Halsted Street ( I went for a Metallica kind of sound on those power chords, she says) and the Bayou-inspired Swamp Swim. Then there s Heaven, which takes everything back to church. I wrote that as more of a political song with a West African feel, but Lance gave it more of a gospel sound. His brothers are pastors and have churches, so they brought that kind of feel into it. Jimmy is the middle brother of the legendary Heath Brothers (Percy Heath/bass and Tootie Heath/drums), and is the father of Mtume. He has performed with nearly all the jazz greats of the last 50 years, from Howard McGhee, Dizzy Gillespie, and Miles Davis to Wynton Marsalis. In 1948 at the age of 21, he performed in the First International Jazz Festival in Paris with McGhee, sharing the stage with Coleman Hawkins, Slam Stewart, and Erroll Garner. One of Heath's earliest big bands (1947-1948) in Philadelphia included John Coltrane, Benny Golson, Specs Wright, Cal Massey, Johnny Coles, Ray Bryant, and Nelson Boyd. Charlie Parker and Max Roach sat in on one occasion. During his career, Jimmy Heath has performed on more than 100 record albums including seven with The Heath Brothers and twelve as a leader. Jimmy has also written more than 125 compositions, many of which have become jazz standards and have been recorded by other artists including Art Farmer, Cannonball Adderley, Clark Terry, Chet Baker, Miles Davis, James Moody, Milt Jackson, Ahmad Jamal, Ray Charles, Dizzy Gillespie J.J Johnson and Dexter Gordon. Jimmy has also composed extended works - seven suites and two string quartets - and he premiered his first symphonic work, "Three Ears," in 1988 at Queens College (CUNY) with Maurice Peress conducting. After having just concluded eleven years as Professor of Music at the Aaron Copland School of Music at Queens College, Heath maintains an extensive performance schedule and continues to conduct workshops and clinics throughout the United States, Europe, and Canada. Jill and her arranger/producer/engineer/band, Bill Bentley, have outdone themselves as they continue the tradition of crafting non-traditional, unpredictable musical nuggets. This album begins with "Loving You Is Easy," a catchy pop song that has some vocal surprises. From there, we are presented with "Heartbroken," a stunning, memorable message to someone whose attempt to take their own life created a ripple effect in the lives of loved ones. The tone significantly lightens on "Tell Me Goodbye," with a whimsical musical track and melody that belie a deeper message: Either step up to the plate or risk losing a chance at love. We are transported into some of my favorite Jill Detroit territory with "If You Love Me," a jazz-blues blend that shows off Jill's sultrier, swinging side. The "Jill-ettes" shine as they mimic the big band horn section and culminate in a swinging finale that compels you to swing (sic) along. "Changes," a rock ballad that shows off Jill's incredible vocal range and control, is followed by "White Girl Playing on the Street," a song that owes its inception to Jill's childhood experiences growing up in middle America, where her obsession with music outweighed any differences in outward appearances or cultural background. Bill Bentley captures the innocence of Jill's experience playing her guitar on the street corner, oblivious to traffic or gathering crowds with a largely acoustic track featuring a hammer dulcimer and hand claps. It was all about the music! In "Love Like This," Jill delivers a beautiful melody that lovingly encases a familiar message: Love is a journey full of ups and downs; joy and heartache. In "Needing It," Jill regales us with another jazz-infused song featuring an instrumental track that demonstrates the amazing range and talent of Jill's producer (and band), Bill Bentley, as well as the "Jill-ettes." Next up is another catchy pop song, "Hiding in Plain Sight," with its simple tag line and sing-along melody. The final and title song of this album is "See You Later." Co-written with Bill Bentley, this very personal song, which epitomizes the essence of this musical partnership, is dedicated to Jill's late nephew, Wyatt Phillips, whose engaging smile and pet phrases, such as "Don't think of it as goodbye.think of it as see you later," inspired the touching lyrics that are lovingly nestled in an engaging melody that are captured with heartfelt performances.
