GarciaLive Volume Seven showcases the Jerry Garcia Band's November 8th, 1976 performance at Sophie's in Palo Alto, California. Recorded by Betty Cantor-Jackson, the original master reels were only recently re-discovered, along with a few other reels dubbed the "Houseboat Tapes", and have been remastered for this release. It was the year of this recording that Donna Jean and Keith Godchaux first joined up with the Jerry Garcia Band. Their addition, along with Ron Tutt on drums and bassist John Kahn, helped form what would be one of the most durable lineups of the Garcia Band. In fact, earlier that year Garcia commented "I haven't been as happy with any little performing group since Old And In The Way in terms of feeling 'this is really harmonious, this is what I want to hear.'" That harmonious vibe is especially present on this recording as well. Throughout the course of the evening, the band deftly melds gospel, rock, soul, and reggae to form their quintessential mid-70's sound. As one astute critic pointed out, "More than any other Garcia band this one allows him room to run through all his guitar styles, often within a single song." From the opening notes of "The Way You Do The Things You Do", the band lock into a relaxed, but confident groove with Kahn & Tutt's deep pocket providing the foundation for Jerry & Keith's melodic exploration and rounded out by Donna Jean's soulful harmonies. The Hunter/Garcia penned "Mission in the Rain" and Dylan's "Knockin' on Heaven's Door" are particularly poignant and soulful while songs like Peter Rowan's "Midnight Moonlight" and Hank Ballard's "Tore Up Over You" provide the sparks bringing balance to the evening. Despite Anton's young age, the album glows with its musical maturity and emotional variety. Of course, last but not least, because of experienced musicians - pianist Alexei Podymkin and bassist Yuri Galkin - are taking part in the recording. A wonderful trumpeter Jason Palmer from Boston has become Anton's fellow partner in the horn section. His voice, no doubts, adds a special groove to the sound of the CD. Drummer Anton Kuznetsov, Chekurov's peer, yields to none of his partners on this album and demonstrates an outstanding musicality, as well as refined solo and accompaniment technique. The Party's Over Getting her start as a standup comedienne, in the early '90s Jennifer Trainor began to direct her efforts toward shaping a singing career by cutting her performing teeth at small clubs and piano bars in and around the Boston area. Her first CD is a conglomeration of favorite standards mixed with more modern pop material. The only assistance she gets is from Doug Hammer, who augments his piano with the use of keyboard and synthesizer. The latter forms the basis for a string-laden, but enchanting rendition of "In the Wee Small Hours of the Morning." But when Hammer sticks with the straightforward acoustic piano, the subtleties in Trainor's phrasing become evident on "Good Morning Heartache" and "Desafinado." These nuances are not fully exploited when Hammer turns to the keyboard for the ersatz organ sound. Trainor can also be peppy and preppy when she dives into pop favorites, including "How Can I Be Sure," which was popularized by David Cassidy. But she is also not afraid to take on lesser-known material. There is a credible reading of one of Barry Manilow's lesser-known efforts, the lilting "I Was a Fool to Let You Go." She also has some fun with the bar song "Scotch & Soda," composed by the Kingston Trio's Dave Guard. The play list was obviously constructed to bring out the best that the singer has to offer. She does not have a powerful voice, nor one with especially great range. What she has are large doses of warmth and expressiveness, deftly spooned to each song she offers. Call Me is a pleasant recital of tunes, well-known and less-familiar, by a singer confident in her ability to deliver a tune. Hyperion is delighted to present a special collaboration already an extraordinary force on the concert platform in its first appearance on record. Alina Ibragimova and Steven Osborne are musicians of searing, uncompromising intelligence and intense feeling. In his works for the violin, Prokofiev produced some of his most personal and expressive music. Both of his Violin Sonatas were written for David Oistrakh. The first was begun against the backdrop of Stalin's Great Terror, and one senses that he drew his inspiration from the uncharacteristically dark wells of fear, despair and bereavement which were the lot of Prokofiev and his contemporaries. The Violin Sonata No.2 is of a very different character generally sunny and carefree, though still with occasional fleeting shadows. In its original form it was a Flute Sonata, Op 94, which Prokofiev had completed in 1943. At David Oistrakh's suggestion and with his assistance, Prokofiev transcribed the work. That joke is making fun of the countless jazz singers who insist on recording nothing but Tin Pan Alley warhorses that -- as great as they are -- have been recorded much too often over the years. But not all jazz singers have a warhorses-only policy, and risk-takers like Claire Martin, Cassandra Wilson, and the Philadelphia-based Lou Lanza are doing vocal jazz a huge favor by having adventurous, far-reaching repertoires that aren't limited to Tin Pan Alley. Jacqui Naylor is another risk-taking jazz vocalist with an interesting repertoire, but there's a catch: she's also a folk-rocker -- and her folk-rock side has the upper hand on Shelter. Naylor has been dividing her time between a folk-rock/adult alternative aesthetic and vocal jazz; she's compelling in both areas, but whether Naylor favors one or the other all depends on what a particular song calls for. Interestingly, the most jazz-oriented thing on Shelter is an interpretation of the Rolling Stones' "Miss You"; Naylor has no problem finding the tune's jazz potential, and her jazz side also prevails on Joan Armatrading's "Love and Affection" and the Billie Holiday-ish "All for You" (which Naylor co-wrote with pianist Art Khu). But most of the time, Naylor's folk-rock side wins out on Shelter. Most of the 11 songs she co-wrote with Khu for this album are more folk-rock than jazz, and folk-rock serves Naylor well on introspective tracks such as "Before I'm Gone" and "Free My Love." He began studying guitar on his own at the age of 12 after being introduced to jazz by his father, an American. He studied music at the University of Oslo and received a scholarship to the New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music in New York City. While in New York, he studied the jazz repertoire as a gateway to harmonic improvisation. His primary instructor was the legendary guitarist Jim Hall, who influenced his tone. Young studied with Hall privately as well as in ensemble settings. He also took private instruction from guitarist John Abercrombie, one of the mainstays of ECM Records. In addition to studying his chosen instrument, Young studied jazz composition as well with pianist Richie Beierach and Kenny Werner. He graduated in 1993 and spent time freelancing and apprenticing in the city with notables Rashied Ali, Marc Copeland, Junior Mance, Larry Goldings, and Arnie Lawrence. Young eventually returned to Norway and recorded three titles for local labels with musicians such as Nils Petter Molvaer, Trygve Seim, Arve Henricksen, and Jarle Vespestad. While gigging in Norway with Seim's band, Young garnered the attention of Norwegian vocalist Karin Krog. The pair recorded a duet album, Where Flamingoes Fly, on the Grappa label, produced by John Surman. The duo did a world tour behind the album. ECM Records' impresario Manfred Eicher heard Young playing with Seim's band and eventually signed him. Jacob Young's debut for ECM, Evening Falls, features his own compositions and a two-year-old band containing three generations of Norwegian musicians including veteran drummer Jon Christensen, who has been part of the ECM roster since the '70s; maverick trumpeter Mathias Eick, bass clarinetist and saxophonist Vidar Johansen, and bassist Mats Eilertsen. He was the guitarist in the experimental jazz-rock-eletronics outfit Interstatic and played on their self-titled debut in 2007. His own effort, Sideways, followed in 2008; recorded with the same band that cut his first album, it appeared in 2008. In 2009, Young was the guitarist in drummer Manu Katch??'s band for Third Round, which was issued in 2010. He spent the next three years playing live in Europe on his own and backing others.
