Her most recent record project (tenth studio album), "To Be Loved", is a Light Jazz/Adult Contemporary creation on Naxos' Suite 28 Records that showcases her intimate, yet powerful mezzo-soprano voice, in the same sisterhood as Sarah McLachlan and Celine Dion. Her tumultuous journey through a childhood music career compelled her to write a tell-all book, "Keeping Secrets". The book (2016) chronicles the dramatic and abusive life of a young girl surviving the South-African music industry and has propelled her to become a fierce advocate for women facing abuse. She has shared her story on the Steve Harvey Show and multiple TV networks. She founded a free women's counseling clinic in Franklin, Tennessee to help women in crisis. She continues to sing and speak, and directs her passions to encourage audiences with her uplifting message. When she's not on the road Ilonka lives in Franklin, Tennessee, enjoying the "bliss of life" with her husband Bill, daughter I??lia, her Yorkie, a good book and wading in a fly fishing stream. Inspired by two marvelous poems from the pen of Oscar Wilde, Ilja composed two additional songs to complete this album. Amongst his credits as a composer, Ilja won the prestigious Thelonius Monk/BMI Award in 2003. Besides writing for both jazz and classical musicians and ensembles of international allure, (Ben van Dijk, Henri Bok, the Metropole Orchestra, the Jazz Orchestra of the Concertgebouw to name but a few), Ilja has always harbored a desire to write music for vocalists. It is a singular pleasure for a music fan when the first few bars of previously unheard music tell you that this is a record you are going to like a lot. From the opening gutsy riff of "Blue Balls and Niclas Knudsen's down 'n' dirty guitar lines, Absinthe, the third album from Danish band Ibrahim Electric, proves to be one of those records that gets under your skin and into your blood faster than a Ganges parasite. The challenge for any groove-based Hammond/guitar/drum trio is in not sounding repetitive, after all, there are only so many ways you can vary the order of the solos. Another challenge is to avoid sounding like every other Hammond-led band that has come before. On both scores Ibrahim Electric emerge with nearly full marks on Absinthe. If you forgive the fact that the underlying groove of "Splash sounds a lot like Booker T and the MGs' "Green Onions then you are left with a highly enjoyable bluesy workout, with Knudsen and Hammond B-3 man Jeppe Tuxen trading great solos. Ibrahim Electric shifts from blues to the rollicking jam-band funk of "En Kold Fra Kassen, a ten-minute track that comes closest to recreating the quite awesome energy of this trio in concert. "Lobi, with its irresistible guitar motif and cantering percussion, could be the soundtrack for a spaghetti western in Mali. On Absinthe Ibrahim Electric really mix it up nicely. African and Arabic sounds rub shoulders with '70s TV show-theme pastiche and gritty, sluttish guitar vies with raucous B3 over a lively percussive pulse. Where is the trip heading? The quartet around the brilliant and charming singer C??cile Verny entices listeners of "Got A Ticket" to engage in a pleasurable search for new paths away from well-trodden ones without fear of crossing linguistic or stylistic borders and without rigidly giving in to imaginary or real constraints. As a result, the texts are very emotional and evocative in addition to having fantastic arrangements. She sings them in her own unique way and proves that she is of a special quality. C??cile Verny has the right feeling for swing, always gets the different moods of the 10 beautiful tunes precisely right and shines above all thanks to her improvisatory skills. The C??cile Verny Quartet is composed of four artists, who have gained all kinds of different experience in their own careers very individual and very far-reaching. First and foremost is the singer and leader C??cile Verny, who was born in the Ivory Coast and has lived in France since the beginning of the 80s where she could be found involved in very different music genres (jazz, gospel, musical, pop, blues and lots more). One of her and her quartet's biggest successes was first prize at the song festival "Concours Vocal du Festival de Crest" in 1992. Pianist Andreas Erchinger is the "main composer" in the quartet. He comes from hardbop and modern jazz, graduated from the Swiss Jazz School where he developed into one of the best pianists for accompanying singers. He has worked with Charlie Antolini and Dusko Goykovic, among others. Bassist Bernd Heitzler made a name for himself above all with his numerous creative works as sideman in bands of very different sizes and styles jazz, pop, rock, world music, Latin, salsa and and and there seems to be no genre where he is not at home. In 2006 Curtis Salgado was diagnosed with liver cancer and given eight months to live unless he underwent a half-million-dollar operation. The money was raised from benefits by friends of Salgado such as Bonnie Raitt, Robert Cray, Steve Miller, and Taj Mahal, and donations from fans. After the successful transplant, the cancer spread to his lungs, requiring yet another operation. On his first post-cancer release, anyone not knowing what he went through would be astonished that he could come out of the ordeal sounding this healthy. Salgado enlisted members of the Phantom Blues Band and drummer/producer Tony Braunagel to handle the backing, and the combination is a natural extension of the soul-blues stew the singer/harpist has been cooking up since his first solo album in 1991. It takes confidence in your vocal abilities to cover tunes sung by Smokey Robinson ("Who's Lovin' You"), Al Green ("Let's Get Married"), and Little Richard ("I Don't Want to Discuss It"), but Salgado is up to the challenge and turns in striking performances that do justice to -- or, in the case of the Robinson tune, improve on -- the originals. Elsewhere, Salgado wades in the rocking swamp blues of "Heartache," shifts into Johnny "Guitar" Watson funk-soul mode for the title track, and heads to Memphis for the Hi-styled "Drivin' in the Drivin' Rain," the latter one of four originals co-written by Salgado. There's more than a little Delbert McClinton to his raspy voice, which he uses to terrific effect on the moody, obsessive "My Confessions." The rollicking Clapton tune "Bottle of Red Wine" is a perfect vehicle for Salgado's soul shake, and gives him a chance to blow some tough harp. Blues looms large in his catalog of influences, and Salgado pays tribute to one of the genre's icons in "20 Years of B.B. King" with lyrics comprised predominantly of King song titles. It sounds corny, but he pulls it off due to his obvious sincerity and by playing it straight. The connection with the Phantom Blues Band is both natural and inspired as they lay into this material but never steal the spotlight from Salgado, who sounds enthused and, well, glad to be alive. Barrence and the boys are to soul what the Cramps are to Rockabilly-a gateway musical drug to America's demented roots underbelly. Whitfield is a performer so consumed with satisfying his audiences that he has been called 'crazed, frenetic and completely unhinged.' After college, Barrence, like many organic music lovers, found himself working in a Kenmore Square record shop called Nuggets. There, he was discovered by guitarist Peter Greenberg, of the legendary Boston bands DMZ and The Lyres. Through this introduction, Barrence got his first taste of the rock 'n roll life and Boston's music scene. Boston re[beeep]rocated in kind with 7 Boston Music Awards. The Boston-bred collective will release a new album on Bloodshot this summer - their first since 2011's Savage Kings - entitled Dig Thy Savage Soul (CD/LP/Digital). Following the release date the band will tour the east coast, Europe, and then eventually other select cities across the United States. Brouqui and his men attack 7 challenging Silver tunes (plus 3 originals) with drive, intensity and swing. While the players come at the music from a bebop perspective, they capture the funky Silver harmonies (e.g., first few bars of HoraceScope) but Courthaliac doesn't attempt to mimic the unique Silver right hand. Which is OK cause no-one can. These aren't the usual Silver tunes (no Nica or Song for My Father) and thus attest to the marvelous depth of his catalog. Sweet Stuff and St. Vitus are especially a pleasure to hear in this fresh context. Some cuts are taken at breakneck speed which is both jaw-dropping and demonstrates how intimately these players know and understand what they're up to.
