To celebrate the release of Getz's reunion album with Brazilian singer/guitarist Jo??o Gilberto, 1976's The Best of Two Worlds, the saxophonist booked a week of shows at the Keystone backed by his quartet and featuring Gilberto. Whereas Getz/Gilberto '76 showcases the Gilberto performances, Moments in Time finds Getz appearing alone with his band, featuring pianist Joanne Brackeen, drummer Billy Hart, and bassist Clint Houston. Despite the wealth and fame he accumulated from his initial 1960s bossa nova albums, Getz remained a creatively restless, forward-thinking artist over the coming years. Eternal Return Unified is tenor saxophonist Stan Killian's third album and his debut for the Sunnyside label. It's high-quality, straight-ahead modern jazz, played with a real swing by Killian and his band, and enlivened by the contributions of three top-drawer guest horn players. Leader/composer Killian hails from Texas, home of Texas tenors like Arnett Cobb and Illinois Jacquet. Killian's own sound certainly has a big, wide open, feel to it but there's a gentleness there as well, a warmth and friendliness of tone. Venezuelan pianist Benito Gonzalez has a lightness of touch that enables him to create some delicate but swinging solos, as well as some finely tuned rhythms. Killian and Gonzalez play on all seven tunes, interlacing their instrumental lines with a skill and confidence that suggests a longstanding musical relationship. Bassists Corcoran Holt and Bryan Copeland, and drummers Darrell Green and McClenty Hunter share rhythm section duties. Whatever the combination of players, each of the quartets is impressive in its own right the rhythm playing of Gonzalez, Hunter and Holt that underpins Killian's lyrical solo on "Center" being particularly fine. The addition of a guest player to each of the numbers simply puts icing on the musical cake. The three guest musicians on Unified are all bona fide stars of modern jazz and they more than repay Killian's invitation. Of the two trumpeters, Jeremy Pelt's brighter sound is a fine contrast to Killian's. Roy Hargrove's tone is a little warmer, less bell-like, and complements rather than contrasts with the tenor player. David Binney adds alto sax to three numbers, his sound also complementing Killian and adding depth to their unison playing. On Gonzalez's "Elvin's Sight" dedicated to drummer Elvin Jones and featuring excellent percussion from Green the pair swings beautifully, while on the hauntingly dreamlike "Unified," both saxophonists give controlled but emotionally engaging performances. The guests on Unified all play beautifully, and their presence certainly attracts attention. But Killian's own contributions as lead musician/writer are stylish and engaging, and the core quartets on the album demonstrate their ability to stand alone as musical ensembles , just as the album title suggests. ~ Bruce Lindsay. Featuring the hit song "Cupid/I've Loved You For A Long Time", this CD was released on 29 May, 2007 by American Beat. Review by Jason Ankeny of All Music Guode: With Love Trippin' the Spinners transitioned from a decade they helped define to a new decade dominated by the last days of disco and the emergence of rap--the presence of producer/arranger Michael Zager portends a full-blown paean to dancefloor sensibilities, but Zager wisely emphasizes the group's rapturous harmonies, creating a Spinners record for the Eighties instead of an Eighties record for the Spinners. But the songs are uniformly bland--it speaks volumes that the album's biggest hit was a medley, "Cupid/I've Loved You for a Long Time"--and not even the vocals can salvage duds like "Split Decision" and "Heavy on the Decision." She was a relative latecomer to jazz, taking time out to raise a family at a young age and work as a journalist before studying at the Manhattan School of music and privately with vocal great Mark Murphy, though she has developed into a formidable singer in a relatively short time. Souter's gorgeous, natural vocals never show pretension or gimmickry, while her taste in songs is amazingly wide-ranging and occasionally risk-taking. For these 2008 sessions, her accompanists include the brilliant pianist Kenny Werner (who works especially well with vocalists), saxophonist Joel Frahm, Brazilian guitarist Romero Lubambo, veteran first-call bassist Jay Leonhart, and the in-demand drummer Billy Drummond. Souter's lush treatment of "Close Enough for Love" captures the essence of this beautiful standard (a favorite of the late Shirley Horn and many others). The haunting setting of "Morning of the Carnaval" opens with Werner's elegant piano and Leonhart's mournful arco bass, while Souter's spacious, lovely performance is also complemented by Frahm's moving soprano sax. The vocalist uncovered a gem in Benny Carter's neglected "Key Largo," which she casts in a setting that suggests a midnight stroll along the beach with her lover. But Souter is at her most stunning when she tackles songs that one doesn't normally hear in a jazz setting. Her infectious, slinky take of Van Morrison's "Moondance" opens with her sexy vocals over Leonhart's walking bass, with judicious use of reverb that is never overdone. John Lennon's "Imagine" has long been a pop standard, though jazz arrangements have been few and mostly disappointing, but Souter is buoyed by her imaginative rhythm section, though she takes few liberties with it until she is well into the song. Of the many benefits borne out of the age of information, the existence of Internet chatrooms and e-mail has created unparalleled opportunities for communication. Such has been the experience of the musicians paired on this disc, but their story goes well beyond mere online exchanges. On the one hand, Kenny Werner is simply one of the boss piano players around on the international jazz scene, and notwithstanding his extensive sideman duties with many of the greats, his own list of credits only confirms the fact that he is one of them himself. On the other hand, alto saxophonist R??mi Bolduc has earned his stripes on the Montreal scene over the last 15 years, and this recording clearly shows his abilities to work with the best. Now in his early forties, he spent some time in the Apple back in the early 90's, honing his skills with Steve Coleman while hanging out with the likes of Larry Grenadier, Adam Rogers and Ben Monder. About three years ago, R??mi decided to approach the pianist for a lesson, having transcribed and studied his music beforehand, but within 15 minutes, Werner let his visitor know that the best way to learn was to just go for it and play together rather than expect any formal instruction. A nice vote of confidence indeed. Since then, their musical relationship has been cemented onstage (a performance at the Montreal International Jazz Festival), pursued via the Net and now finally documented on disc. Always fresh and spontaneous in its exchanges, the duo of R??mi Bolduc and Kenny Werner breaks down the usual barriers separating solo and accompanying instruments. Not only are these kindred spirits able enough to re-harmonize tunes at will, but they can also turn on a dime and launch into mellifluous cadenzas that are rhythmically fluid yet never out of bounds. With such prime ingredients, it's not surprising that these top-notch performers have succeeded in producing more than run-of-the-mill 'tchats' but a wide range of engaging musical conversations. Can't Help Lovin' Dat Man Tenor saxophonist Bob Berg channeled the bold dynamics of hard bop to emerge as one of contemporary jazz's most expressive and resourceful improvisers, honing a richly articulated sound bolstered by flawless technical command. Born in New York City on April 7, 1951, Berg grew up in Brooklyn, initiating piano lessons at age six. At 13, he moved to alto saxophone, first discovering jazz when a high school teacher introduced him to the music of Cannonball Adderley and Horace Silver. After dropping out of New York's High School of Performing Arts, Berg enrolled in a special non-academic curriculum at the Juilliard School of Music. In 1968, he made his professional debut touring behind Brother Jack McDuff, and by the time the 1960s drew to a close, he specialized in tenor saxophone, his subsequent creative path profoundly shaped by John Coltrane. After a brief flirtation with free jazz Berg renounced the avant-garde in favor of postwar bop. On the recommendation of fellow saxophonist Michael Brecker, he joined Silver in 1973, remaining with his boyhood hero for three years, when he replaced George Coleman in Cedar Walton's Eastern Rebellion. In 1978 Berg stepped out to record his debut LP, New Birth, and after leaving Walton in 1981 he cut his sophomore effort, Steppin': Live in Europe; he rose to new levels of renown upon joining Miles Davis in 1984, a three-year stint that set the stage for his 1987 breakout session, Short Stories. Berg closed out the decade in the band he led with co-founder/guitarist Mike Stern, cutting a series of LPs including 1988's Cycles and 1990's In the Shadows. In 1992, he signed on with Chick Corea's acoustic quartet, and that same year led his own quartet on a U.S. Department of State-sponsored tour of the Caribbean. Upon releasing the 1997 solo date Another Standard, Berg joined an acoustic reincarnation of the group Steps Ahead, and in 2000 he also joined the cooperative project the Jazz Times Superband, collaborating with Randy Brecker, Joey Defranchesco, and Dennis Chambers. Berg next surfaced alongside vibraphonist Joe Locke in the group 4 Walls of Freedom.
