Movements (1958-59) , revised 1946) Performers: Jean-Efflam Bavouzet (piano) Sao Paulo Symphony Orchestra Yan Pascal Tortelier (conductor) The piano wasn't as central to Igor Stravinsky's output as it was for some of his contemporaries, such as B??la Bart??k or Sergey Prokofiev, yet he featured it in three major works, the Concerto for piano & wind instruments, the Capriccio for piano and orchestra, and the Movements for piano and orchestra, dating from his middle and late periods. Yet even in the early ballet Petrouchka, the piano was used as a prominent instrument in the orchestra, so while it might seem that Stravinsky was not preoccupied with it, the piano was indispensable to him, and he found inventive uses for its brilliant sonorities. Jean-Efflam Bavouzet joins Yan Pascal Tortelier and the S??o Paulo Symphony Orchestra as soloist in the first three works, and plays the piano in the orchestra in Petrouchka, demonstrating that where one sits is no indicator of importance. Indeed, since this album is a multichannel audiophile recording, so where anyone sits is relative to the sound profile, not the seating arrangement, and Bavouzet sounds as clear and fully present as if he were playing in front of the orchestra. Pass The Peas (17:48) Say the name Maceo Parker, and immediately the legendary R&B saxman's longterm association with the late, great James Brown comes to mind. Depending on how steeped one is in R&B, Parker's later work with George Clinton and Bootsy Collins might pop up. But long before the Godfather of Soul entered the saxman's life, Parker was grooving heavily on Ray Charles, who became one of the influential musical heroes of his life. The first disc of Roots and Grooves gloriously celebrates Parker's connection to these roots, his early years in North Carolina listening to early Charles tracks on the radio. The second is something of a wildly jazzy, impossibly funky jam retrospective on his best solo tracks. The hook that makes this more than simply a high energy covers date is that it teams the brilliant altoist with Germany's renowned WDR Big Band -- and from the first swinging blasts behind Parker's horn on "Hallelujah I Love Her So," "big" is the operative word. Given Parker's sense of groove invention and the evergreen emotional power of Charles' chestnuts like "Busted" and "Hit the Road Jack," anyone might have expected this to be a dream match. But it's more than that because Parker also sings with a gravelly, Charles-like perfection on these two songs, and even more poignantly on "You Don't Know Me," "Margie," and a magically moody "Georgia on My Mind." Charles may have been declared deceased in body in 2004, but he lives again through Parker in haunting yet wonderful ways. On "Getting Back to Funk" (the title of the second disc), Parker revisits his own rich catalog of classics, starting with "Uptown Up" and vibing right on through to a nearly 18-minute scorching take on "Pass the Peas." Released in early 2008, this double set was an instant classic. While the album may make its strongest commercial connection with her churchy, Norah Jones-ish reading of Van Morrison's "When Will I Ever Learn" and its yearning cover of Randy Newman's "Living Without You," it is more strongly defined by its originals, which encompass moody folk-rock, horn-fed funk, jazz-rock fusion and samba. How could it be otherwise with such central repertoire, the core works of any cellist's concert programs, and along with Bach's Cello Suites, the apex and crown of any cellist's recording career? But no matter how many other great sets of Beethoven's works for cello crowd the shelves, this great set of Beethoven's works for cello and piano by Miklos Perenyi and Andras Schiff belongs on every shelf for two reasons. The first reason is that Perenyi and Schiff's set is the only great set that also has Beethoven's own transcription for cello of his Horn Sonata, and while the suave transcription cannot match the bumptious original, it is still an interesting gloss on the original. The second reason is that Perenyi and Schiff's set is one of the warmest and most deeply human of all the great sets of Beethoven's works for cello and piano. From the emotional and eccentric pair of early Sonatas, Op. 5, through the witty and whimsical pair of Mozart Variations and the heroic Handel Variations and the virtuosic Sonata, Op. 69, to the emotional and eccentric pair of mature Sonatas, Op. 102, Perenyi and Schiff's performances are obviously affectionate and profoundly affecting, performances that touch the heart. I'll Be Around Although very much a jazz singer, Jackie Allen explores music on Love Is Blue that crosses over style-wise into 1970s pop and singer/songwriter material. There are versions of two veteran standards ("Lazy Afternoon" and Alec Wilder's "I'll Be Around") but most of the repertoire, which deals with the darker side of love, is made up of recent originals (including "Go," which was co-written by the singer) and music taken from the pop world. Allen has a flexible voice and sounds fine on the ballad-oriented material, but the lack of mood variation makes this set of less interest than expected. A trio of veteran players delivers performances that are confident, detailed, and graceful throughout. The sound, despite the fact that the booklet is festooned with logos representing all manner of high-tech sound techniques, is disappointing; the use of the Floriankirche in Straden, Austria (was a church a normal performance venue for a Mozart keyboard concerto?) gives the music a rather chilly brightness at odds, especially, with the intimate, domestic quality of the Concerto for three pianos and orchestra in F major, K. 242, of 1776. The good news is that the performance of that work, a piece of total fluff that seems dull and formless if the players do not enter into its playful spirit, is just about ideal. Director and annotator Manfred Huss points out in the booklet that the score is full of jokes heard only by the performers and those physically close enough to be completely involved with them -- players have to hand off music among themselves in mid-phrase, for example. Obviously there's no way to fully put that across on disc (although Huss makes a stab at it with a slightly different fortepiano than those used by the other two players), but the showy quality of the lines and Mozart's ability to make pianists of modest talent sound like stars come through complete. The Concerto for two pianos and orchestra in E flat major, K. 365, is given in two versions, the second, a 1782 revision of the 1779 work, includes clarinets, trumpets, and timpani. If the wind section tends to overwhelm the keyboard in the earlier version, you can imagine what happens when natural trumpets enter the mix, although the performance is certainly not dull. She sang with Georgie Auld in 1943, then performed in a number of bands after completing time in the navy in 1945. These included orchestras led by Claude Thornhill, Alvino Rey, Charlie Ventura, Woody Herman, Charlie Barnet and Stan Kenton. She married Andre Previn in the mid-'50s, made two recordings with him directing. She later divorced Previn and married Mundell Lowe.
