We Are Here But For A Minute Pianist-vocalist Ben Sidran is one of those rare characters celebrated as much for their intelligent pronouncements on jazz as their ability to play it, and his 1971 book Black Talk remains one of the great dissertations to deal with both the music and its wider socio-cultural context. In fact, there has always been something wily and urbane in Sidran's lyric writing and delivery, regardless of whether the subject is lovers, critics, or lovers who criticise. That the smart 67-year-old Chicagoan should tackle the songbook of Bob Dylan, another famously sharp pen in contemporary pop culture, thus makes a certain amount of sense and right from the downbeat Sidran appears to revel in the words as well as melodies of songs that he grew up with and on. Recorded in concert at Paris' celebrated New Morning, Sidran is on chipper form, backed by a European group that features both trumpeter Erik Truffaz and his longstanding bass guitarist Marcelo Guiliani as well as guitarist/vocalist Rodolphe Burger and drummer Albert Malo. They all skip heartily along the most well-trodden of roads in Dylan land - Subterranean Homesick Blues, The Times They Are Changin' (no "a-" on this tracklisting) and All I Really Want to Do - and essentially bring more blues to the folk-blues that underpinned a major part of Dylan's oeuvre. Certainly, the band has the chops to give the renditions the requisite energy that Sidran's gritty, at times snarling vocal delivery requires, and, on the whole, they capture the sense of dissent and defiance that the originals embody. Maggie's Farm, extrapolated into a dark, brooding 10-minute epic in which Giuliani's bass and Truffaz's trumpet improvise sinuously around a jutting two chord vamp that implies electric Miles without the electricity, is a choice cut. It's a shame, though, that the set ends with the sole Sidran original, We Are Here but for a Minute - it's one that really does not highlight his proven songwriting talents to the greatest effect. Ellington composed or co-wrote most of the 11 songs on this CD, though Feather chose lesser-known and especially challenging material to embellish with her gifts. She is also a superb singer who gets the most out of every track, joined by a large cast of talented musicians who sound as if they've played every chart together night after night for years. It's hard to beat her hilarious "Imaginary Guy" (based upon "Dancers in Love"), a terrific ditty about a girl so fed up with the opposite sex that she dreamed up the ideal man in her mind. The obscure bossa nova "The Ricitic," written by Ellington for his small group session with Coleman Hawkins, is transformed to the sidesplitting "Antarctica" (sample lyrics: "I cried all night/That's half a year"), a song that is guaranteed to tickle the funny bone of the sourest curmudgeon. The dark-tinged "Lovely Creatures" (based upon the second movement to "Night Creature") is not without its humorous moments ("You've got looks and bucks and yet these blues/Seem to stick to you like gum to shoes"). She wrote the words to "September Rain" (adapted from Billy Strayhorn's gorgeous ballad "Chelsea Bridge") a number of years earlier and recorded it with her group In Full Swing. This chart, with the rhythm section arranged by pianist Mike Lang and the vocal group by Morgan Ames, is every bit as lush as the original instrumental, showcasing Feather's upper range and Terry Harrington's mellow tenor sax. "The 101" is a hard-charging reworking of "Suburbanite" that tells of a dash down a highway to catch up with her lover. The finale, "Mighty Like the Blues," features words and music by the late Leonard Feather, Lorraine's father. As it turned out, Tjader was a replacement for Guaraldi, who had originally been scheduled but had recently passed away. His debut EP for BBE came out in July, and the album, the cunningly titled 'Time To Rearrange', will surely soon follow in 2008. Aaron has been cutting his teeth for a while with remixes for established artists like Roy Ayers, Bugz, Zap Mama and (his mate) Nitin Sawhney, but it was his remix of Nicole Willis' 'Feeling Free' that really got this young man noticed. Having wowed the underground with his single on Wah Wah 45s, 'Man Troubles', and having appeared on the acclaimed CDR 'Burnt Progress' compilation, this boy is now ready to fly. His super smooth production skills earned him a deal with BBE and we can now all look forward to a stunning selection of songs that have been on repeat on my CD player for longer than I care to mention. There are also more remixes to come, with a stunning break beat re-work of Pete Rodriguez for Fania out about now (as part of the Fania DJ series) and remixes for label mate DJ Vadim, Richard E, Scrimshire and Ninja monkey boy Bonobo to follow. Trumpeter John Swana and tenor saxophonist Ron Blake make up the front line, with bassist Rodney Whitaker and the promising guitarist Jesse Van Ruller completing the rhythm section. There's an emphasis on original music by the band: Penn contributes three tunes, and Whitaker, Swana, and Blake each offer one. But the band opens with Thelonious Monk's minor-key swinger "Teo" and also plays a beautiful "You Must Believe in Spring." Van Ruller and Swana begin the latter, and Blake pairs with the guitarist to end the piece in a similarly subdued fashion. Penn's "Blues for Paris" is a romp over Charlie Parker's "Blues for Alice" changes, with Van Ruller laying out during the horn choruses. Bob Hallahan's mellow waltz "The Charm" is another highlight, as are Swana's churning modal tune "Red Alert" and Penn's hard-swinging trio number "Preston's Theme" (featuring Ron Blake). ~ David R. It begins with the electrifying title track from 1979's Tap Step -- which featured the late Joe Farrell -- in a fusion quintet, continues through his "Bud Powell" composition with then-young lions Wallace Roney, Kenny Garrett, and Christian McBride (along with the timeless veteran Roy Haynes) in 1989, through to his beautiful solo rendition of "Spain" in 1999, all on disc one. Corea dazzles technically and is always in stellar company, from younger players like those mentioned above or younger still (Avishai Cohen) to contemporaries (Gary Burton and Michael Brecker), to mentors (Lee Konitz). While Corea does play Fender Rhodes and synthesizers on that first cut, the rest of this first disc features his acoustic piano. Disc two is more varied; balanced between Rhodes and acoustic piano. It begins in 2003 with the now familiar "Blue Monk" rendered by Corea and vocalist Bobby McFerrin, and moves through his New Trio period with John Patitucci and Dave Weckl, and into the Elektric Band with those players, Frank Gambale, and Eric Marienthal, with "Johnny's Landing" off 2004's To the Stars. There's a reunion with Airto on the quintet cut "North Africa" from The Ultimate Adventure, and a beautiful version of "Fool on the Hill" with Japanese piano sensation Hiromi. There's another pair of of duets, too: "Senorita" with Bela Fleck from The Enchantment, and a live version of "Crystal Silence" with Burton backed by an orchestra. Disc two closes with a balance of the old and the new. First, there's the crunchy rocking fusion of "The Disguise" from Five Peace Band: Live, which features Garrett, McBride, Vinnie Colaiuta, and guitarist John McLaughlin, followed by an unreleased live acoustic version of "La Fiesta" with Lenny White and Stanley Clarke from the Return to Forever "unplugged" tour, which was left off 2011's Forever.
