Very few Chicago blues artists were able to pierce the R&B charts during the 1970s, when interest in the genre was at rock-bottom. But smooth-voiced Artie "Blues Boy" White managed the rare feat with his 1977 single for Altee, "Leanin' Tree." Gospel was White's initial musical pursuit. He sang with a spiritual aggregation, the Harps of David, at the age of 11 prior to coming to Chicago in 1956. More church singing was in store for White with the Full Gospel Wonders. The singer claims that he was lured into singing the devil's music by a well-heeled gent who drove up to an unsuspecting White in a flashy Cadillac and promised him $10,000 to record some blues songs! White's '70s singles for PM and Gamma stiffed, but with the advent of "Leanin' Tree," White was able to command a nice asking price on the Chicago circuit (and still does). For a while, White tried his hand at running a blues club, Bootsy's Lounge. But performing and recording won out; White waxed a terrific debut LP in 1985 for Shreveport-based Ronn Records called Blues Boy. White signed with Ichiban in 1987 and waxed six fine sets in the soul-blues vein (enough to merit a Best Of CD in 1991, which made seven), utilizing Chicago songwriter Bob Jones (the composer of "Leanin' Tree") and labelmate Travis Haddix as chief sources of material. On 1989's Thangs Got to Change, White enjoyed the presence of Little Milton Campbell, one of his prime influences, on lead guitar. Composer Unsuk Chin was a student of Gy??rgy Ligeti, but her style resembles his only in her general orientation toward layered textures and rhythmic emphasis. She writes music in which the relationships between blocks of sound shift over the course of a composition, and although her harmonic world is atonal, her writing is not difficult to follow. The concerto form allows an ideal introduction to what she does, and the three works here are attractive examples (she has written several others). Start with the concluding Su, for sheng & orchestra, from 2009. This is the only work on the program with specifically Asian content (and the instrument involved is Chinese, not Korean), but the way the sheng is treated, generating extremely unusual texture combinations with the orchestra, is illustrative of the whole. The Piano Concerto of 1996-1997 is an extreme virtuoso work easily handled by soloist Sun-wook Kim, while the Cello Concerto (2008-2009, rev. 2013) uses a single note as its center and evolves the music of soloist and orchestra from that note in different ways. In none of the three pieces does the soloist fulfill the traditional concerto role of the individual opposed to the crowd, but neither is any of the three simply an ensemble work with a prominent solo instrument. This is precisely the music's considerable appeal, and conductor Myung-Whun Chung draws out the works' often exacting textures to their full extent. Colorado Sunrise (4:25) Forged on the banks of the North Saskatchewan River and shaped by the hands of small town Alberta, the Northbank Stranglers are the illegitimate children of old-school country and yesterdays rock n' roll. "I think all kids go through a phase where they believe the music they grew up with isn't cool," Says frontman Ty Fletcher when asked about musical influences. "We were raised on country music, but there came a time when rock n' roll, punk rock and rebellion had a much brighter shine. When you grow up a bit, you realize that you'd been taking the songs of your youth for granted, and the mix is what has created the Strangler sound." Guitarist Scott Melnyk, drummer Layne Eaton, and bassist Kirby Yarosh round out the Northbank Stranglers foursome, and the chemistry of the band is evident in the music they make. With each member bringing unique musical influences to the table, the Northbank Stranglers' sound can be described as a mixture of classic country and rock n' roll, with an undeniable punk rock energy. "We did it just to say we could," says Fletcher of the Northbank Stranglers 2014 EP Born To Lose. "We'd only just recently started the band, and though, why the hell not. It was a snapshot of where we were at the time. It showed us what we could do if we put some work into it." A year, and a mitfull of songs later, The Stranglers hit the studio, this time working with Scott Franchuk of Riverdale Recorders to make their first full length record. Dead City Blues is a natural transition to how far the Northbanks Stranglers have come in a short time. Songs of hard-luck, over-indulgence, loneliness and whisky soaked nights continue to be the theme of the Stranglers, but the maturity of the band is apparent. The Northbank Stranglers are in full stride. This is clear in the 10 track, early 2016 release of Dead City Blues. The hard thumping first single, Lonely's Only Prayer, is a song about vulnerability and poor decisions, and the consequences that go along with them. A tale of shooting for the stars, striking out and crashing down, describes the college influenced tune, Without a Trace. The Stranglers' showcase their weighty side with I Am the Breeze, an anthropomorphic ballad of the void left in one's hometown after they have moved on, and the lost love story, Colorado Sunrise. The album is rounded out with the rhythmic, catchy title track, Dead City Blues, an autobiographical narrative about a rural kid blinded by the big city lights. "These songs are relatable," says Fletcher of Dead City Blues. "We've all been in these situations or have shared the same outlook on life as the characters in the songs. Most of all, I just think they are honest." But this is not the only reason for the fact that this band has one of the most faithful and active fan communities ever. While the United Kingdom in 1977 was enthralled by Punk, Dennis Graeves and Mark Feltham decided to found a Blues Band which probed to be a lucky decision for musicians and audience alike. Their first album "Live At The Marquee" was already a huge success. It featured songs that later would turn out as classics, such as "Homework", "Keep On Knocking" and "Ridin' On The L&N". Clein first came to prominence when she won the BBC Young Musician of the Year award in 1994; it is appropriate that she performs the music of an extraordinary child prodigy. The first cello concerto has always been one of Saint-Sa??ns' most popular pieces, Casals choosing it for his London debut in 1905. It is a gloriously playful piece that carries the listener along on a melodic and emotional rollercoaster, from the jaunty opening to the eloquence of the second movement minuet, with a persistent yearning threading its way throughout. The second concerto will be less familiar to listeners. The soloist for whom it was written, Joseph Hollman, was an energetic, muscular player and Saint-Sa??ns seems here to turn his back on the suave style of the first concerto. When Saint-Sa??ns' pupil and friend Gabriel Faur?? chose the concerto as a Conservatoire test piece, the composer was duly grateful, but admitted 'it will never be as well known as the first; it's too difficult'. This it certainly is, with many solo passages, huge leaps and runs that require two staves to accommodate them, and a large amount of doublestopping. Natalie Clein meets these challenges with marvellous technique, musicianship and the passion for which she has become so well known. My Impetuous Heart (3:26) She's come a long, long way from the time she set the jingle world on end by singing those three syllables, "mmm-mmm-good," and kicking off a commercial idolization of Campbells Soup. My Impetuous Heart, Marlene Ver Planck's 16th album and first for DRG, makes manifest that her voice is as light, lilting, clear, and entertaining as it ever was, maybe even more so. Her backing on this album, with the Hank Jones Trio taking the lion's share of accompanying duties, is as impeccable as the playlist, which blends standards with some compositions that aren't performed often. There are guest appearances by George Shearing, Marian McPartland, and Bucky Pizzarelli on a couple of the cuts. Ver Planck is blessed with an unsurpassed sense of timing and phrasing. Listen to her with Hank Jones on the "Friends" medley "Can't We Be Friends" and "Just Friends." Those small pauses between phrases has the listener waiting in anti[beeep]tion for the next line. No matter what the style, Ver Planck handles it with aplomb. She's bouncy with "Call Me Irresponsible," where Jones gets some solo time, and she's soulful on "Fools Fall in Love." Ver Planck doesn't scat -- at least not very much -- but engages in sophisticated cooing and humming on "...Irresponsible" and on the introduction to Mal Waldron's "Soul Eyes." Pizzarelli's guitar does melodic but unobtrusive yeoman work in support as Ver Planck caresses haunting lyrics penned by the undervalued vocalist Bev Kelly. Excellent playing by Hank Jones' regular bass player, Gary Mazzaroppi, prevails as he weaves in and out with Ver Planck on "Travelin' Light." Ver Planck and Jones deliver "You're Getting to Be a Habit With Me" as a ballad. The slower pace permits greater appreciation of the lyrics, which often get glossed over by the breakneck speed in which this tune is usually performed. Ver Planck displays her poignant, melancholy side with a heartrending interpretation of "You Must Believe in Spring," and does so without being maudlin. George Shearing shows up to assist in the presentation of the cabaret favorite "All in Fun." Among the less familiar but listenable material is "Willow Creek"; Marian McPartland joins with Ver Planck on this wistful tune, which McPartland wrote with Loonis McGlohon. The inviting "Dance With Me Outside," introduced with some of that sophisticated cooing, is a cosmopolitan vocalist/trio rendering reminiscent of a small, cozy (and expensive) New York City Lounge. It's an intimate setting, with musicians delivering a slightly off-center tune. Marlene Ver Planck is among those contemporary "veteran" performers who are in the upper tier of jazz pop singers, along with the likes of Carol Sloane and Sue Raney.
