La Fiesta (live) (5:27) This two-disc, 21-track collection covering Chick Corea's recordings over 30 years offers a dazzling array of settings and styles, originals and standards. It begins with the electrifying title track from 1979's Tap Step -- which featured the late Joe Farrell -- in a fusion quintet, continues through his "Bud Powell" composition with then-young lions Wallace Roney, Kenny Garrett, and Christian McBride (along with the timeless veteran Roy Haynes) in 1989, through to his beautiful solo rendition of "Spain" in 1999, all on disc one. Corea dazzles technically and is always in stellar company, from younger players like those mentioned above or younger still (Avishai Cohen) to contemporaries (Gary Burton and Michael Brecker), to mentors (Lee Konitz). While Corea does play Fender Rhodes and synthesizers on that first cut, the rest of this first disc features his acoustic piano. Disc two is more varied; balanced between Rhodes and acoustic piano. It begins in 2003 with the now familiar "Blue Monk" rendered by Corea and vocalist Bobby McFerrin, and moves through his New Trio period with John Patitucci and Dave Weckl, and into the Elektric Band with those players, Frank Gambale, and Eric Marienthal, with "Johnny's Landing" off 2004's To the Stars. There's a reunion with Airto on the quintet cut "North Africa" from The Ultimate Adventure, and a beautiful version of "Fool on the Hill" with Japanese piano sensation Hiromi. There's another pair of of duets, too: "Senorita" with Bela Fleck from The Enchantment, and a live version of "Crystal Silence" with Burton backed by an orchestra. Disc two closes with a balance of the old and the new. First, there's the crunchy rocking fusion of "The Disguise" from Five Peace Band: Live, which features Garrett, McBride, Vinnie Colaiuta, and guitarist John McLaughlin, followed by an unreleased live acoustic version of "La Fiesta" with Lenny White and Stanley Clarke from the Return to Forever "unplugged" tour, which was left off 2011's Forever. Since his first public performances in the early 70's in Denver, Catfish has toured the country both as a solo artist and in bands, performing in clubs, coffeehouses, music festivals and concerts. His favorite style of music is a combination of Blues/Rock, but he has performed in bands ranging from traditional blues and folk to more contemporary rock. Catfish has hosted weekly jam sessions on public radio, (he has a B.A. in Radio and TV Production), booked college concerts, written a guitar instructional book, and has taught many music workshops and classes. He is a recording artist, songwriter, author, and studio musician with a large variety of albums to his credit. Since moving to Maui in 1991, John has performed in several bands. He started the Front Street Blues Band, which featured many of his original compositions as well as classic and contemporary blues and rock tunes. He played fiddle and banjo in the group "String Fever" (He also engineered their album, "Contagious".) and has played in a number of duos playing in clubs and on tour boats. Like drinking whiskey from a honey jar, you get both the sweet and the bite. And he has just created the best album of his twenty-eight year career. The arrangements are tight, and yet the performances are rich in blues pathos. Words like 'timeless,' 'astute,' 'archetypal' just about cover it. At its core, "My Turn Now" is all about contrast. There's "Joker's Wild," with its hard-hitting lyrics and J.J. Cale groove. Or "Rosalyn," with Wilco-esque chords telling the tale of a doomed love affair. There's "My Turn Now," a full-on Johnny Winter-fueled blues about a motorcycle racer who's fed up with losing. There's "Nine Days' Wonder," with jaunty Ry Cooder-esque slide guitar and a cynical lyric about short-lived sensations. And there's "Year Began," one of Williams' most compelling songs to date, about the fateful jump of Evil Knievel over the fountains of Caesar's Palace on New Years' Eve in 1967. And if that weren't enough, who would think Mose Allison's caustic "Your Mind Is On Vacation" could make such a good rocker? It's all there but the howling feedback. "My Turn Now" is a perfect storm. It's a collision of roots and evolution. Brooks Williams, who was born in Statesboro, Georgia (USA), brings it all to the table on "My Turn Now."
