Gratz's presence on the Narada roster gave him substantial equity in terms of name recognition, helping him become one of the more recognized and best-selling artists working within his niche. Critics slammed him for being less inspired than insipid and bitterly reproached his accessible, mass market approach. "Bull Goose Rooster" will improve the quality of your summer listening I guarantee it! In 2008 Slim and the Workers captured the Album of the Year for the "Wheel Man" release. What the heck, he won Band of the Year as well! Mojo magazine awarded Slim to p blues albums in 2006, and 2007, and he doubled up in "07 by also winning the Independent Music Awards top blues album of the year. In 2009 he was nominated "B.B. King Entertainer of the Year." Just a little background in case you don't know Slim. I find that hard to believe, but in case you don't know him, please quit fooling around and look into it. Slim, by his own admission, is a "Toothless 64 year old bluesman, but I put on a hell of a show." His band the Workers are solid as the Rock of Gibraltar and together they indeed, put on a heck of a show. Slim writes, sings vocals, plays slide, guitar, harmonica, and drips the blues like an old log full of honey. His songwriting is superb, and he has lived the life of a bluesman from being a Vietnam Veteran, to a collection agent. He also has two undergraduate degrees, and a Masters, and can speak 4 languages. All of those degrees are in the blues, just kidding, but it sounds that way, Slim ain't no dummy. He sings from the heart, and tells his story of life, and the beating it gives you on that highway. His slide work is great, so is the harp, it is a great CD from a man who is on top of his game. With 16 cuts on the CD Watermelon "Rooster" Slim is not backing up or apologizing. He is creating a monster here. From originals, to gospels, to Trucking down that road, to flat out blues songs he covers the gamut. He even does a slow ballad with Danielle Schnebelen that is just great. Caucus Giovanni Guidi is an Italian jazz pianist who is well known on Europe's jazz scene and as a frequent collaborator with trumpeter Enrico Rava. Guidi has born in Foligno and studied piano from a very young age; he pursued it as his sole vocation. His primary teacher through his school and into conservatory was Ramberto Ciammarughi. By attending summer seminars, he was noticed by Rava, who recruited him for one of his now famous "Under 21" groups. Guidi recorded two live albums with this band in 2006 and 2009 for the Editoriale l'Espresso label. In addition, he has been a sideman on recordings by saxophonist Mauro Negri, guitarist Roberto Cecchetto, and drummers Tommaso Cappellato and Fabrizio Sferra. He has also been a member of Gianluca Petrella's Cosmic Band and appeared on two of their recordings. Guidi released his debut album as a leader at the age of 21 with the trio date Tomorrow Never Knows on Venus in 2006, and followed it with a series of acclaimed recordings on Cam Jazz. The first two were self-titled quartet sessions in 2007 and 2008, respectively. In 2010, he released his debut big-band offering, The Unknown Rebel Band, modeled on the influences of Charlie Haden's Liberation Music Orchestra, the Freedom Now Suite band of Max Roach, and the Carla Bley Big Band. His first New York recording with Petrella, drummer Gerald Cleaver, bassist Thomas Morgan, and saxophonist Michael Blake, entitled We Don't Live Here Anymore, was issued in 2011. That same year Guidi signed with ECM. His debut for the label, City of Broken Dreams, was a trio date, recorded with Morgan and longstanding drummer Joao Lobo. The album was released in June of 2013. His roots were in R&B and soul-jazz organ combos, but he also fared very well on the infrequent occasions when he played straight-ahead jazz. A highly influential player, Washington pushed himself with the spontaneity and risk-taking of a masterful jazz musician. Grover Washington, Jr.'s, father also played saxophone and was his first influence. The younger son started playing music when he was ten, and within two years was working in clubs. He picked up experience touring with the Four Clefs from 1959-1963 and freelancing during the next two years, before spending a couple years in the Army. He moved to Philadelphia in 1967, becoming closely identified with the city from then on, and worked with several organists, including Charles Earland and Johnny Hammond Smith, recording as a sideman for the Prestige label. His biggest break occurred in 1971, when Hank Crawford could not make it to a recording date for Creed Tasylor's Kudu label; Washington was picked as his replacement, and the result was Inner City Blues, a big seller. From then on he became a major name, particularly after recording 1975's Mister Magic and Feels So Good, and later 1980's Winelight; the latter included the Bill Withers hit "Just the Two of Us." Although some of his recordings since then found him coasting a bit, Washington usually stretched himself in concert. He developed his own personal voices on soprano, tenor, alto, and even his infrequently-used baritone. Grover Washington Jr. recorded as a leader for Kudu, Motown, Elektra, and Columbia and made notable guest appearances on dozens of records ranging from pop to straightforward jazz. He died of a sudden heart attack on December 17, 1999 while taping an appearance on CBS television's The Saturday Early Show; Washington was 56.
