Of the 13 selections, four are instrumentals and several are tinted with a sweet R&B coating. However, every number is seasoned with Duke's indelible jazzy melodies and interludes. Ware Archive Series, and the first release of the saxophone master in rare duo performance with fellow master of music, pianist Matthew Shipp. Though sharing 17 years together in the legendary David S. Ware Quartet (along with bassist William Parker and a series of drummers), Shipp recalls that he and Ware performed duo concerts perhaps six times at most in that period. Thankfully, on this latter-day occasion, their work together in this form was professionally recorded. This concert is one continuous long-form improvisation; it spans an incredibly wide range of approaches and dynamics. The ecstatic deep listening experience of free jazz performed at a highest level avails itself here in full. Their delighfully pithy trading fours encore to the concert is also included. Obviously the very deep levels of communion which were developed within the context of Ware s Quartet inform this work. In equal evidence is each of them embracing the leaderless duo context, challenging and expanding their mutual language throughout. Following David s untimely passing in October 2012 on the eve of his 63rd birthday, it was understood necessary to continue releasing singular works of great magnitude in order to further radiate his distinctly potent sound and vision. David S. Ware s work was a foundational inspiration for the AUM Fidelity label, and its mission continues strong with this essential DSW-ARC series. Song Everlasting (11:25) This matchup looks really good on paper -- a guest shot by fluid, flexible guitarist John Scofield in the full flush of his first inventive phase with the quartet whose inside/outside mastery should have defined mainstream jazz in the '80s (if there was any justice, which we all now know there isn't). But Live at Montmarte really doesn't live up to expectations, in part because the first two tracks hit tempos that go beyond breakneck to become frenetic and one big technical gaffe. The culprit there is Cameron Brown's bass, which is miked so high it sounds like he's playing bass guitar on the first three tracks. It distorts the instrumental balance, rastily bombing out on the octave drops driving the near "Compared to What"-groove opening "Flame Games" and pulling attention from Don Pullen's strong solo on "Well, I Guess We'll Never Know" because of the loud, fat bass tone. "I.J." is too rushed to effectively lock in as George Adams strews about tenor sax notes and "Flame Games" breaks into an energetic, near-fusion theme that sometimes works and sometimes doesn't, with equally sporadic moments in the solos. Things improve tempo-wise with "Well, I Guess We'll Never Know," enabling the group to finally achieve some cohesion and give a pretty muted Dannie Richmond his only (and brief) bit of solo space. With Brown's technical troubles resolved, the ballad-based final tracks are fine, with Adams and Scofield doubling on the pretty gorgeous, vaguely Arabic-tinged melody to "Forever Lovers." Adams goes for a Trane-like tone and flurries in his solo but still crams in a few too many notes, Scofield smoothly picks up the solo thread, and Pullen goes off with cluster swirls before bringing it back home. "Song Everlasting" features a mellifluous tenor melody before Pullen takes over, followed by Adams and Scofield, both sounding far better playing at these more relaxed tempos. Live at Montmarte isn't all it could have been, but sometimes things just don't happen. It sounds like Scofield and the group never found a truly comfortable common ground. They don't clash, but it never feels like they're totally in synch, either, at least not enough to reach the greater-than-the-sum-of-the-quartet-with-guest-soloist-parts level. Serving as the house pianist at the Milwaukee Jazz Gallery, he backed luminaries including Eddie Harris, Sonny Stitt and Chet Baker, the latter encouraging Hazeltine to further pursue his career by relocating to New York City; arriving there in 1992, he formed his own trio with drummer Louis Hayes and bassist Peter Washington, additionally serving as musical director for Marlena Shaw and playing with Slide Hampton's Jazz Masters Big Band as well as the Carnegie Hall Jazz Band. With tenor saxophonist Eric Alexander, Hazeltine also helmed the group One for All; as a headliner, he made his debut in 1995 with Four Flights Up, followed two years later by The Classic Trio. He resurfaced in 1998 with How It Is, issuing The World for Her the next year.
