Birth of Island (Parts 1, 2, and 3) (13:26) 9. Extra Bass Track (2:03) Holiday for Pans (steel pans, that is) is Jaco's intended follow-up to his 1981 Word of Mouth release. However, when he presented the demo to Warner Bros. in 1983, they rejected it on the grounds that it was too esoteric and lacked commercial appeal. Recorded between 1980 and 1982, the project is basically a vehicle for steel pans master, Othello Molineaux, Jaco's longtime friend and colleague. Jaco actually takes a backseat on most of the recordings, at least audibly. The material features eight tracks, including three Pastorius originals: "Good Morning Anya," an upbeat, sprightly tune dominated by Wayne Shorter's breezy, atmospheric sax and, of course, steel pans; the CD's highlight, "City of Angels," a full-blown, jazz fusion excursion with excellent piano riffing courtesy of Mike Gerber, harmonica by Toots Thielemans and a peppering of acoustic guitar and violin; and "Birth of Island," a 23-minute session of "free play" which begins with Jaco shouting, "just play," but doesn't really show its teeth until the last 7-8 minutes. "Birth of Island" is grounded in percussion, with a smattering of sax and trombone. Jaco cooks, but not until the piece has nearly ended. While several minutes near the close are quite arresting, the track acts mainly as filler for a very brief and insubstantial project. In 1986, Pastorius remixed four of the tracks, but years later (after his death), Kenny Jackel claimed all engineering responsibilities for the project, stole the master tapes of the recordings and sold them to Super Stop, an Osaka-based distribution company. At some point along the way, Jackel had a friend overdub bass parts on some of the tracks in an attempt to compensate for Jaco's secondary presence on the album. Evil (3:07) After WW II, Chicago Bluesmen like Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf, Buddy Guy & Otis Rush, who derived their style from the Mississippi Delta tradition of Charley Patton & Robert Johnson, plugged in their guitars and invented an exciting and powerful format that redefined Blues. When by the mid-sixties most major labels in America had given up on the Blues, white British Blues bands like The Rolling Stones, Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac, John Mayall & His Bluesbreakers and later Cream and Led Zeppelin re-exported the Blues back across the Atlantic, but with a very distinct Rock influence. Blues Karloff is all about these musical influences; Black and White, British and American, that shaped the musical tastes of the various band members in their youth. On their debut album Blues Karloff salutes some of the Blues legends that every member of the band has been listening to since childhood. They recorded nuggets by Robert Johnson, Jimmy Reed, John Lee Hooker, Albert King, Howlin' Wolf, and Muddy Waters, but recasting the vintage Blues gems in a contemporary fashion like the British Blues-Rock greats such Savoy Brown and The Yardbirds had done in the late sixties and early seventies before them. ""Ready For Judgement Day"" Blues Karloff contains a powerful blast of mostly hard rocking Blues; each track road tested in neighborhood bars and clubs - some places without a stage, lighting or sound support. If any song failed to connect with the audience of which the majority wasn't even familiar with these classic Chicago Blues tracks reinterpreted by the band in their own distinctive fashion, then the song was soon dropped from the repertoire. Gypsy Blues (4:56) The latest from blues outfit Blue Moon Maruqee is an album in conversation with their previous recordings. On their previous album, Lonesome Ghosts, they began referring to their music as "Gypsy Blues." Now they have a new album called just that. Gypsy Blues is even talking with Stainless Steel Heart - an album that was out when they were still called A.W Cardinal - in the form of redone versions of the album's "Shading Tree" and "Driftin.'" Hearing the new version of these new songs (the latter is now called "Driftin' Blues") alongside their first iterations is instructive in showing how A.W. Cardinal and Jasmine Collette's music has changed. Cardinal now sings with a rough growl that adds a certain intensity to some of his songs, and his songs place a greater emphasis on bluesy electric guitar riffs. The original version of "Shading Tree" almost sounds like a folk song; on Gypsy Blues it gets particularly fearsome when Cardinal sings the line about a raging bull. As per usual, Blue Moon Marquee makes plenty of use of the 12-bar blues-right off the bat, in fact, with "Trickster Coyote" and "Hoodoo Lady." Both songs feature a fairly simple idea (attraction to an alluring but dangerous lady) but with the former featuring a morphing image and the latter a static one. The band switches things up often enough that the album doesn't become stale. "Pour Me One" is especially exciting; you can almost tell right away that the song will be shorter because Cardinal is singing and playing faster, as though he's trying to sing the blues in a punk style. On the opposite end of the spectrum, "Ain't No Hill" is nice and leisurely, with some lazy guitar licks slowly ushering the listener into a song with Collette on vocals. If you're on the lookout for fiery lyrics, look to "Runaway Lane" for brushes with death or "Double Barrel Blues," where Cardinal implores you: "Gonna pull that trigger/Better pull it twice" and "Put your buckshot right in my side."
