Relentless indeed if you consider the pace at which the band has been working for the last two years with touring, writing and recording. The awards they keep racking up only confirm that hard work pays off. Adding to their multiple Maple Blues and Lys Blues awards and nominations they had a number one album on the iTunes Canada Blues Chart and in January 2016 they took home 2nd Place among 119 competing bands from around the world at the 32nd annual International Blues Challenge, held by the Blues Foundation in Memphis. Hot on the heels of that win they returned to Montreal to complete writing and recording Relentless and the result captures the very essence of The Paul DesLauriers Band. A true collaborative effort on every front, singer-guitarist Paul DesLauriers, bassist Greg Morency and drummer Sam Harrisson approached this recording the same way they have in the past, three men playing together in the same room, capturing performances live off the floor; and this time they applied that philosophy to the whole creative process, writing and arranging all the music together from the ground up. Lyrics were penned by DesLauriers and long-time collaborator Alec McElcheran. Each member a virtuoso in his own right, what sets this power trio apart is their chemistry and uncanny musical interaction. Through the driving riffs on "Stewtro Rock (Just Got Back)" and "Ten Feet Tall", the swampy grooves of "I'm Your Man" and "Still Under My Skin" and the heavy blues of "If I Still Had You", you sense the power, the intention and most of all the unique sound these three have created. Heaviness is interspersed with funk, fun and cheeky double-entendre in tracks like "Gonna Make You Move (Part 1)" and "We Just Might", the complexities of relationships and a life of chasing the muse are discussed candidly in numbers such as "Wipes Away Your Sin" and "Up In The Air". Through every track, the personalities shine through, but what is most striking is the unity and the maturity radiating from this trio at the top of their game. Sea Of Blues Dennis Newman began his professional career in music at age twelve as a drummer/singer when he formed a pop group called "The Runaways", and played local events in his hometown of Rye, New York. He later switched from drums to keyboards and founded another rock band, "The Saratoga Wrecking Crew", and performed at high school and college dances. He also took up harmonica and fronted the "Odds 'n Ends", a rock'n'roll band gigging throughout the New York/New England area. Newman relocated to Los Angeles and hooked up with various bands, and deveoped a unique playing style, backing his soulful vocals with swirling Hammond organ and stylish blues harp. In 1995 he released his self-titled debut CD - " MULE NEWMAN ", using the nickname he picked up because of his reputation as a hard-working showman who carried a heavy load... a five hundred pound Hammond-Leslie rig, and an even heavier load... of the blues! The CD got extensive airplay worldwide and was critically acclaimed. (6:02) Hardcore blues fans might have noticed harpist Matthew Skoller's name in the backup band credits for artists such as Koko Taylor, Bernard Allison, Larry Garner, and John Primer, but unless you're a resident of Chicago, it's unlikely his work is familiar to you. Weekly gigs in the Windy City have sharpened Skoller's edge, and on his third indie album These Kind of Blues! he proves what blues musicians have known for years: he's ready for the major leagues. Like Charlie Musselwhite, he's pushing the blues borders, even into rap on the G. Love-styled remix of "Handful of People," a song available in two versions. There are echoes of Paul Butterfield's thick, gutsy, amplified sound in Skoller's tone, as well as masters like James Cotton and Little Walter. His songs also traffic in edgier areas than those more closely associated with the blues, as with the politically charged "Handful of People," and the philosophical musings of "Let the World Come to You." The latter track is enhanced by soulful backing vocals and even Brian Ritchie's shakuhachi, not a typical blues instrument. The link to Chicago's fertile harp masters is emphasized by the appearance of guitarist Lurrie Bell, the son of legendary harmonica player Carey Bell. Skoller's vocals are husky and assured, bending around the lyrics and his rugged harp attack. Unlike many bandleaders, Skoller never overdoes his solos, bursting into songs with confidence and pulling out before the listener has fully absorbed his monstrous sound. In fact, there are times when you wish he would further emphasize his intense playing. A grinding, melancholy cover of James Cotton's "Down at Your Buryin'," one of only three covers, is a showstopping album high point, revealing his band's restraint, a terrific slow burn lead from Bell, and Skoller's masterful touch. (5:59) As the '60s became the '70s and the Nixon/Agnew repression set in, Dave Brubeck threw himself entirely into sympathy with youth; hence this often-vehement choral cantata, written as a reaction to the Kent State and Mississipi State killings. The danger here is that such a work might quickly become dated, although Brubeck, like Benjamin Britten before him in the War Requiem and Leonard Bernstein concurrently in his Mass, tried to alleviate that by juxtaposing protest with religious texts. Amidst the fugal writing, twelve-tone subjects and other erudite classical techniques, Brubeck indulges in a sour assassination of "The Star Spangled Banner," and echoes of "Taps" and "Over There," and a bizarre yet oddly effective prelude, with a country/jazz/rock jam turning into a big-band/symphonic rampage. The big problems occur when Brubeck lets his son Chris's rock group New Heavenly Blue carry the ball, for their passages are filled with embarrassing cliches, musical and literary, made even more quaint by the poor recording quality. Erich Kunzel and the Cincinnati Symphony give their all, but Brubeck doesn't give his piano much to do outside the Prelude. His mature harmonica playing led a number of musicians to take him into their bands; Deitra Farr, Big Time Sarah, Jimmy Rogers, Big Daddy Kinsey, John Primer, Bernard Allison, H-Bomb Ferguson and Larry Garner. In 1992 Skoller started his own band. This cd is a killer, full of keen observations, driving rhythms, desperate textures and coutionary messages. Skoller has a free flow of expression that comes from maturity, expierence and hard work. He tells his own story. Personally, I think the first three Funk Inc. records are WAAAAAAAY better. Those three are funky and fast paced. This, and the other Axelrod produced record Superfunk, are really mellow and don't even have the signature Axelrod sound to them that much. A small portion of God Only Knows was looped for Black Sheep's Le Menage and Where Are We Going opens with congas before both turn into so-so soul songs. Somewhere In My Mind is probably the best song on here beginning with a funky bass line and low-key drums. Other than that, there's not much here. Tell Me What's the Reason (2:49) Texas Rhody Blues, featuring Jimmie Vaughan and Duke Robillard, is the third Knickerbocker All-Stars CD release. The project was supported by the Knickerbocker Music Center, a non-profit organization formed in partnership with the Rhode Island Philharmonic Orchestra & Music School. The Knickerbocker Music Center will have an exciting performance venue and an exceptional center for music education. This CD has its roots in The Newport Folk and Jazz Festivals of the late 1950s and early '60s which turned many white soul searchers on to blues, rhythm and blues, and jump blues. In 1963, Blues at Newport was recorded live at the Newport Folk Festival, which featured many of the greatest folk and delta blues musicians. A young woman attending college in Boston heard it and was hooked. Her name is Bonnie Raitt. The next Newport Folk Festival brought in two of the most influential Texas bluesmen: Lightnin' Hopkins and Mance Lipscomb. The talented guitarist, Mike Bloomfield who deserves much more recognition for pioneering blues music, offered blues workshops at the festival with Lipscomb and Hopkins. Bloomfield performed with Paul Butterfield and made rock 'n' roll history when he handed Bob Dylan a Fender Stratocaster and Dylan played three "electrified" songs with Sam Lay, Barry Goldberg and Al Kooper. A young Rhode Island blues aficionado also was hooked. His name is Duke Robillard. The Texas/Rhody blues connection was further developed when Rhode Islander Johnny Nicholas joined Asleep at the Wheel as vocalist and won a Grammy in 1978. At the time, Roomful of Blues, the Fabulous Thunderbirds and the Cobras - Stevie Ray Vaughan's band - were the hottest acts to play in Austin and Westerly, RI. Rhode Islander Fran Christina, the original Roomful drummer, joined the Thunderbirds followed by Roomful's bass player, the late Preston Hubbard. When Jimmie Vaughan left the Thunderbirds, Robillard took over on guitar for three years. The climax of the Texas/Rhody Connection came when Stevie Ray played with the Roomful Horns at Carnegie Hall in 1997. Texas Rhody Blues is a celebration of the great Texas Bluesmen and the generation of tremendous blues musicians who followed, of which there are too many to list. There is no question that Jimmie Vaughan and Duke Robillard should be hall of famers and the bookends of the Texas/Rhody blues connection. The Knickerbocker All-Stars are celebrated veterans and masters of their craft. Laws and Brian Templeton all make a powerful blend, and among them they've garnered literally dozens of BMA and Grammy nominations. The songs are characteristic of the ones played in the heyday of the Knick, first done by early Roomful influences Bobby Bland, Freddie King, Guitar Slim, Cleanhead Vinson, and many others, and this crew reanimates them with authority. So, I would get to the barbershop early whenever I would go to get my hair cut, or even after school, I would hang around at the barbershop, because I wanted to get my hands on that guitar. I would take the guitar and they had these old wooden benches. I would lay the guitar on top of the wooden bench and when you would strum the strings, the wood, the bench, would vibrate, and the floor would, the sound would resonate, and you could hear it without the amplifier. I learned just from watching him." Young Gilmore tried to keep his obsession with the instrument from his church going aunt, who was raising him, but word of the talented boy who played at the barbershop eventually got back to her." Decades later and established as a Florida legend, Joey Gilmore provides a highlight at Blues Festivals and night clubs all over the world as one of the best soul-blues and R&B singers in the business. The sound here is a bit more compact overall - with some shorter tracks that really allow Johnson to display his keen sense of economy on his horn, while working in a burning mode that recalls some of his best bop sides from the early years - particularly his work on Blue Note. Bobby Jaspar's in the frontline with JJ - playing both tenor and flute - and rhythm is from a trio that features Tommy Flanagan on piano, Wilbur Little on bass, and Elvin Jones on drums. Jones' touch on the kit gives the album a nicely dancing feel throughout - and is a real reminder of his simple genius in an early setting like this.
