The San Francisco Musical Association, established in 1908, founded the San Francisco Symphony, which gave its first concert in 1911. Its early conductors included Henry Hadley and Alfred Hertz. Originally recorded in 2001, it was finally released -- but only on the German Crosscut label -- in 2003. It was then given a new lease on life in 2007 when co-producer Randy Chortkoff reissued it in a re-sequenced version with fresh graphics and two bonus tracks on his Delta Groove label. The set is a bit of a mishmash too, with different backing musicians bouncing between styles that both pay tribute to classic blues forms and expand the genre's boundaries on world-influenced tracks such as the Afro-beat of "Don't Take Away My Love." Goldwasser tells the story of his professional career in the spoken word intro to the instrumental late-night groove of "Three Sisters," recounting the various artists he has played with and clubs he has worked in, ending with the titular venue. He also touches base on New Orleans second-line funk with "Petit a Petit (L'Oiseau Fait Son Nid)," sung in his native French, and shifts into a stripped-down Jimmy Reed vamp on a cover of Reed's "I'm a Love You." Goldwasser also successfully takes on soul-blues with a Latin, Santana-styled flair on "I Can't Stand It" and hits Peter Green territory on the instrumental "Melba's Bump." He shifts into lowdown swamp mode on "Well, Well, Josephine," one of the disc's most fiery tracks. It is all impeccably played and Goldwasser is certainly a talented guitarist and vocalist. But neither his voice nor tone is distinctive enough to make blues fan's ears perk up when heard in a pack of similarly gifted players. The disc succeeds on its own terms, though, driven by the artist's obvious enthusiasm for the project. Ultimately, there isn't much terribly unique about Bluju, but Goldwasser acquits himself admirably and over the course of the hourlong playing time hits enough high points to please any contemporary blues fan. Mother Of The Year Vocalist, guitarist and songwriter Sam Taylor is the son of the late saxophonist Sam "the Man" Taylor. The younger Taylor didn't really grow up with his father, though, as Sam Sr. left the family to find a better career in New York. Taylor's family eventually moved to Brooklyn, and the young Sam was influenced by his mother, who also came from a performing background in vaudeville shows. He began singing in church at age five and later trained to become a boxer. He eventually fought as a pro boxer for 86 bouts and then found a more peaceful pursuit with his guitar. But through it all, he kept up his gospel singing and songwriting efforts. Taylor has been recording since 1959. His discography and sessionography credits include Atlantic, Colpix, Capitol, Roulette, Stax and Road Show Records. As a songwriter, he's written songs recorded by Sam and Dave, Elvis Presley, Freddie King, Jackie Wilson, Jimmy Witherspoon, Esther Phillips, Brook Benton, the Beach Boys, Maxine Brown and Joey Dee and the Starlighters. As a guitarist and singer, he's accompanied the likes of Otis Redding, the Isley Brothers, Albert Collins, T-Bone Walker, Tracy Nelson and Mother Earth, Big Joe Turner and the Drifters. Taylor recorded two albums for the Tucson-based Trope Records in 1995, Desert Soul and Bluz Man. On both his records for Trope, Taylor is accompanied by Heather "Lil Mama" Hardy on violin, Ed DeLucia on guitar, Mike Nordberg on bass and Jerome Kimsey on drums. Taylor continues to tour regionally around the Southwest. Trope Records had plans to release two more recordings of Taylor's in 1996 or 1997. In the meantime, Taylor is a regular at B.B. Allegretto - Adagio ma non troppo The Northern Sinfonia of England is a highly acclaimed chamber ensemble that performs a wide range of repertory, from Baroque to contemporary fare, including commissioned works. It is perhaps best known for performances of music by British composers, particularly Finzi, Britten, Elgar, and Vaughan Williams, but has also garnered praise for its Handel, Mozart, Schubert, Stravinsky, and other varied repertory. The Northern Sinfonia consists of about 28 members, but often expands or contracts to accommodate repertory demands. It has performed throughout the U.K. and abroad, including at major concert venues and festivals, and has made over 100 recordings for such labels as Chandos, EMI, and Naxos. The NS performs its regular concerts at the Sage Gateshead, many of them broadcast over the U.K.'s Classic FM. The Northern Sinfonia of England was founded in 1958 by Michael Hall, who served as the ensemble's conductor and artistic director, though he never officially held either title. The inaugural concert was given on September 24, 1958, at the Newcastle City Hall, which would serve as the orchestra's regular performance venue until 2004, when the move to the Sage Gatehead Centre was made. The ensemble was initially known only as the Sinfonia Orchestra but added Northern to its name in 1959. Among Hall's accomplishments was the founding of a youth orchestra, originally called the Junior Philharmonic but now known as the Young Sinfonia. Hall was succeeded by Rudolf Schwarz, who served as artistic director from 1964-1973. Despite his title he shared conducting duties of regular concerts with Boris Brott. The Northern Sinfonia Chorus was established in 1973 by the ensemble's prin[beeep]l timpanist Alan Fearon. By the time of Christopher Seaman's tenure (1973-1979), the Northern Sinfonia was gaining notice abroad. Among its first successful recordings were a 1976 EMI LP, The Lighter Elgar, led by Neville Marriner, and a 1977 Enigma Records LP of Bach's Brandenburg Concertos No. 4, No. 5, and No. 6, led by George Malcolm. Tam??s Vas??ry and Ivan Fischer co-directed the NS from 1979-1982, but it was during and immediately following the tenure of Richard Hickox (1982-1990) that the ensemble moved into the international limelight. Hickox would make over 20 recordings with the NS, many after he departed. Among his more notable recorded efforts was the 1993 Chandos CD of Walton's opera, The Bear. Heinrich Schiff served as artistic director from 1990-1996. Primarily a cellist, Schiff achieved critical acclaim with the NS both in concert and on recordings. In the latter realm, the Schiff/Northern Sinfonia 1993 CD of Mozart symphonies No. 29 and No. 40 and "Eine kleine Nachtmusik" on Virgin Classics was a notable success. Jean-Bernard Pommier's tenure (1996-1999) was noteworthy for acclaimed performances of works by French composers, like Faur??, Debussy, and Ravel. Austrian violinist/conductor Thomas Zehetmair was appointed music director in 2002, and his initial three-year contract was extended in 2005, with further extensions keeping him in the post until 2014. Among Zehetmair's more notable recordings with the NS is the 2011 Avie CD of Schubert's Ninth Symphony and Hans G??l's Second Symphony. The ensemble re-located to Gateshead in 2004.
