Most recently I've been running my record store, Alley Records, in Oklahoma City and playing music out and about with my friend and lead guitar player Jack Ardis. While out in Santa Fe during Ethnographic weekend this past summer, a friend of mine, Freddy Lopez, who plays harmonica, was showing me a few record stores I hadn't been aware of. When that was over, he mentioned there was something else he wanted to show me. . .he took me out to west Santa Fe on a hill top to see a recording studio called Frogville. I was blown away by what I saw. A great place with an inviting ambiance to which I was greatly attracted. Long story short, I had intuition, the stars were aligned for this Moon Child, the Holy Spirit was affirmative to it, numbers were speaking to me, I could finally afford to do another self-released CD, and Bill Palmer the engineer and his partner JC Treadwell reassured me we could do it fast and simple and my way! We came back out October 7-11 and 15th and 16 and it was done. It was mostly a magical, mystical, and spiritual time with wonderful, happy people helping me. I think it's the best record I've made. Digipak. "Beautiful Music" used to be a genre in the realm of popular music. It's also been called "easy listening" and then morphed into "adult contemporary". But today's adult contemporary is really just soft rock (albeit today's soft rock is harder than a lot of Top 40 was in the late 70s and early 80s). There used to be stations that played "beautiful music" exclusively: Stanley Black, Ray Conniff, Percy Faith, Frank Chacksfield, etc. Most of the playlist would be recent contemporary hits covered by choral groups, pianists, and orchestras. During that time, London Records sold a lot of their patented Phase 4 Stereo LP records and reel-to-reel tapes. The series was renowned for it's technical brilliance, using state of the art recording, mixing and mastering techniques. Ronnie Aldrich was among London's best selling artists and Tony D'Amato produced many albums using Aldrich's twin pianos backed by The London Festival Orchestra. These albums were not only known for their technical brilliance (which is still quite impressive even in the 21st century) but also for their glossy, gatefold covers featuring colorful artwork and graphics and maybe a sexy model or two. The two LPs featured on this CD were originally released in 1973 and 1972, respectively. The long list of artists whose hits are covered on these albums include Carly Simon, Bread, Dawn, Al Green, Roberta Flack, Gilbert O'Sullivan, Neil Diamond, Sammy Davis Jr., Albert Hammond, and Edward Bear. There are also covers of some hits by "one hit wonders" of the time, like Danny O'Keefe, Hurricane Smith, and Hot Butter. Gato Barbieri's "Last Tango In Paris" was a hit for Herb Alpert in 1973, Nino Rota's "Godfather" theme hit big for Andy Williams, Nilsson covered Badfinger's "Without You" and had a huge hit, and The Partridge Family put out a hit cover of Neil Sedaka's "Breaking Up Is Hard To Do", all of which are featured here as well. Aside from "Tango" and "Godfather", more film themes abound from movies like "The Valachi Papers" and "Young Winston" as well as the Burt Bacharach-Hal David theme to "Lost Horizon". A beautiful version of "The Impossible Dream" is here too. Ronnie Aldrich backed by The London Festival Orchestra is almost like having Roger Williams backed by Mantovani. At any rate, it works and these albums hold up very well today. The playing time of this CD is 81:12, which came as a surprise to me. I thought 80 minutes was the maximum amount of time on a CD. I shouldn't be surprised. When CDs originally came out, we were told it was 70 minutes, then it was 74, then 75, then 80. Who knows what the limit really is? Spanish Eyes Mark Stuart -- sounding here like a younger Waylon Jennings -- has the kind of dusky, throaty growl perfectly suited for singing this kind of Bakersfield honky tonk country-rock. As a songwriter, however, he's meandering down that same wagon wheel-worn path that his outlaw forebears have already tread down to the ground 'til there's nothing left but dust-filled ruts. While there's certainly nothing wrong for replicating the Telecaster-and-pedal steel twang of a much loved subgenre (Dwight Yoakam and Chris Isaak, on occasion, have made attempts to keep it alive among younger listeners), there's nothing original being added here to it either. Stuart's lyrics cover much the same imagery and topical narrative; it must be a requirement for honky tonkers to write about trains, for instance, even though it's doubtful that many bands use them today as means of transportation. The Bastard Sons of Johnny Cash's cover of Merle Haggard's "Silver Wings" has a nice loping feel, and one of Stuart's own, "Texas Sun," rolls along like a semi with rambling guitars and a kicking drumbeat, but this has all been heard before. Cultural Warrior For his debut as leader, Rodney Whitaker takes center stage on several melodies and solos frequently. His playing is well-rounded in every respect, and he has a supple, sleek, strong tone. His core group for this outing consists of James Carter (tenor sax), Cassius Richmond (flute), Wallace Roney and Nicholas Payton (trumpet), Cyrus Chestnut (piano), Karriem Riggins and Gregory Hutchinson (drums), and Andrew Daniels (percussion); pianist Geri Allen and baritone saxophonist Alex Harding make cameo appearances. Three of the 11 tracks were penned by Whitaker the bass/percussion workout "Woman Child," the jungly "(Queen) Roz," and the crackling "Langman." Ken Cox's triumphant melody for Nelson Mandela, "Mandela's Mood," is a highlight, featuring bright melodies and Afro-Cuban underpinnings. Everyone solos on this piece, but it's Carter's histrionics that really provide the exclamation point. There are two hard boppers a version of "Broadway" featuring a path-clearing solo by Carter, and Richmond's "Mood Swings," which finds Carter and Roney acting like Wayne Shorter and Miles Davis. The title track features Payton's plaintive head statement and Chestnut's fervid solo. Whitaker's wife, Monzola, contributes the soft "One Silent Moment," while Roney lights things up for "On Dolphin Street." Allen waxes poetic beneath a bed of exotic, subtle rhythms on "El Morro," and the finale, "Cultural Warrior," is languid and solemn. Whitaker shows a grand diversity on this complete package of modern jazz.
