The Pride of Abilene While the Bastard Sons of Johnny Cash still haven't summoned up the swagger or the attitude to live up to their name, their third album, Mile Markers, does find them finally living up to the promise of their first two albums, which made this band sound like it had plenty of talent but not much to say. Lead Bastard Mark Stuart (who apparently is the band's only constant these days) has sharpened up his songwriting since 2002's Distance Between, and "Borderline of the Heart" and "California Sky" are both lyrically and musically evocative in a way his earlier work never quite managed, and his vocals conjure up the dry, dusty atmosphere of the Western plains with an easy but honest skill. Stuart also has a solid band onboard for these sessions, featuring the masterful Greg Leisz on steel guitar and Taras Prodaniuk on bass, and the performances cook with a muscular authority. And if this music is more straight country than rock these days, it's honest country that neither plays its influences for laughs or is reaching for a fake sense of roots -- Stuart is maturing into a strong songwriter with plenty of heart and soul, and that's what makes Mile Markers connect where the Bastard Sons' first two albums were near misses. Campi was born in New York in 1934 and moved with his family to Austin, TX, at age ten. He started listening to country music, learned the guitar, and formed his first band in high school, which played on local radio stations. Campi made his first recordings in 1951, but it wasn't until 1956, when he cut the single "Caterpillar" b/w "Play It Cool" for the small TNT label, that any of them were released. He went on to record for Domino ("Screamin' Mimi") and Dot ("The Ballad of Donna & Peggy Sue"), and moved to Los Angeles in 1959, where he signed with Colpix and recorded "Hear What I Wanna Hear." During the early '60s, Campi lived in New York and spent two and a half years as a staff writer at Aaron Schroeder's publishing firm, but was never allowed to record any of the songs he'd written. He returned to Austin in 1967 and recorded "Civil Disobedience" for the Sonobeat label, but nothing came of it, and he settled in Los Angeles and became a junior-high school teacher. Around 1973, Campi hooked up with Ronny Weiser's revivalist Rollin' Rock label and started making new recordings in the classic, high-energy rockabilly style. A steady stream of albums followed into the '80s, which also brought a couple of sets for Rounder, 1980's Rockin' at the Ritz and 1986's Gone, Gone, Gone!. His solo work after he left the Eagles continued in the same vein, and with the possible exception of Don Henley, he did as well as any of his ex-bandmates on the solo front. This set combines two of his solo LPs, 1980's One More Song and 1982's Randy Meisner (this was Meisner's second self-titled LP - he issued one under his name in 1978, as well), and the two fit together fairly seamlessly. It's all competent California singer/songwriter country pop, no more, no less, and if Meisner isn't exactly the second coming of Jackson Browne, he's refreshingly unassuming and at times, as with the striking "Playin' in the Deep End," he raises the ante on all of his cohorts. ~Review by Steve Leggett~ Digitally remastered two-fer containing a pair of albums from the former Eagles/Poco member: One More Song (1980) and Randy Meisner (1982). One More Song's hit single "Hearts On Fire" (with Kim Carnes on backing vocals) made the US top 20. The Eagle's Don Henley and Glen Frey provide backing vocals on the title track. Randy Meisner, the album, was an amazing Country Rock production with a stellar host of players including Heart's Wilson sisters, The Tower of Power horn section, Mitchell Froom, Nicky Hopkins and Marcy Levy. Mandacaru (10:01) Quarteto Brasil is made up of four veteran Brazilian musicians, with a fifth as an added guest on several tracks. Led by pianist Cristovao Bastos, who also wrote and arranged most of the compositions played on the session, the group includes saxophonist Ze Canuto (who plays soprano and alto), bassist Bororo (listed as an acoustic bassist, though it sounds like he's using an electric bass), drummer Jurim Moreira and percussionist Marcalzinho. This disc is not typical bossa nova, as the musicians are very forward thinking and take plenty of chances, especially in Bastos' engaging "Subdindo a Rocinha." The one selection written by a North American is Dave Brubeck's early-'60s piece "Bossa Nova U.S.A." which the band plays in a rather sensual, subdued fashion, a good bit slower that its composer, featuring Canuto's magical soprano sax and an inspired solo by the leader.
