Raised with 5 siblings on a musical Suffolk farm, people quickly became aware of her vocal talent. By the age of 5, Polly had already co-written her first song - a song which was selected from thousands to be recorded at Air Studios in London. Polly co-wrote her debut album, "What's The Real Reason" with Ola Onabule, who also produced it on his label, Rugged Ram Records. A highly anti[beeep]ted collection of lyrically refreshing songs, the album reflects Polly's main influences of jazz, soul and hip hop. Polly shimmers in song with an instinctive soulfulness and maturity that belies her years. Her understanding of heartfelt delivery in the tradition of the genre, are notched up a level by the quirky insight of her lyrics. Whilst you're grooving to the jazz tinged hip-hop beats of her tunes, you will also be taken in by the down to earth British humour in her words. Bursting at the seams with wit, incisive intellect and absolute honesty about Polly and the world she inhabits, her songs are delivered via one of the warmest sultriest voices you'll hear in a very long time. With an innate vocal versatility, Polly has been invited to record on various projects including a track with hip hop group Vinyl Dialect, on Wall of Sound's Bad Magic label. In addition, Polly has co-written and performed a song on a British Soul compilation album, 'Diggz Presents Random Soul' on Random Records. He was investigating new ways to use rhythm - always his primary concern - inside his music and more tonally strident ways of involving the front line in extrapolating tonal and harmonic diversions from the melodic framework of his music. To that end, he entered into a more groove-laden arrangement with himself and employed some funkier players to articulate his muse. Along with Cecil McBee and Billy Hart, who were frequent Sanders sidemen, a young Stanley Clarke fills the second bass chair, and Norman Connors fills out the second drum seat. Carlos Garnett accompanies Sanders on tenor, Joe Bonner on piano, and Hannibal Peterson on trumpet. Sanders also added a full-time percussionist in Lawrence Killian. The only cut on the album is "Black Unity," over 37 minutes of pure Afro-blue investigation into the black sounds of Latin music, African music, aborigine music, and Native American music, with a groove that was written into the standard three-chord vamp Sanders used, opening up a world of melodic and tonal possibilities while also bringing a couple of stellar talents to the fore - Garnett being one of them and Connors being another. The heavy, hypnotic groove and a double-time tempo are controlled by dynamics and the groupings of instruments, signaled by Bonner with his stacked fifths, sevenths, and ninths. This is a solid, moving piece of work that seals the cracks in Sanders' vocabulary. His arrangement and the staggering of solos into the whole are magnificent. Here was Sanders as he saw himself in the mirror, a mass of contradictions, and the embodiments of the full fury and glory of music in one man. Hear My Train A Comin' Doyle Bramhall II put his solo recording career into hibernation following the 2001 release of Welcome, choosing to concentrate on his thriving career as a sideman and producer. It was hard to blame him for deciding upon this route, not when Eric Clapton picked him as a lieutenant guitarist and Elton John, Sheryl Crow, and Derek Trucks all regularly came calling. Bramhall channels all this experience into Rich Man, his first album in 17 years and also his best. The key to the success of Rich Man is how he loads up the album with thick, funky rhythms, pushing soul over blues over the course of its 13 tracks. Which isn't to say that he either downplays his guitar prowess or opts out of adventure: he dabbles in Middle Eastern flair on "Saharan Crossing," while the nearly ten-minute "The Samanas" plays like a miniature rock opera. By closing the album with a slow, churning rendition of "Hear My Train a Comin'," he consciously reconnects with blues-rock, but early in the record he's riding mellower Southern soul grooves and concentrating on tight songwriting. And that's the trick of the album: it starts expansive and keeps expanding, taking in all the sounds and styles he's played over the last 17 years. Neither was he the one that made Swedish an accepted language on the domestic hip-hop scene, that honor goes to the Latin Kings. But Petter was the first Swedish hip-hop artist breaking through to a mass audience, making the genre marketable and, by that, making way for a great number of younger MCs. Growing up in S??dermalm, Stockholm, he was a member of the bands Vanguards and Blacktop Dandelions, still rapping in English. But it was not until he started writing lyrics in Swedish he managed to get a contract on BMG. In August 1998, he released his first album, Mitt Sj?¤tte Sinne, with help from Ayo, PeeWee, and Sleepy, among others, parts of a loosely held together collective called Natural Bond. The album got mixed reviews but sold well, if not exceptional. But the coming year, Petter's star rose when he began receiving immense attention from media and better gigs than any other MC in Sweden. When the second album, Bananrepubliken, was released in 1999, Petter was already a big star. This album was more up-tempo, sold better than any other Swedish hip-hop album before, and got good press. While being heavily influenced by American prototypes, Petter managed to put the lyrics in an understandable Swedish context, thus distinguishing him from many of his contemporaries. The songs also had a good down-to-earth and sing- (or rather rap-) along quality. From the position he held after the second album, he was able to get backing from BMG to start his own label, Bananrepubliken, where he signed a mix of old friends and new discoveries like Eye-N-I, Feven, and Ayo. Born July 23, 1946 in Vicksburg, Mississippi, he was still a child when his father died violently; his mother passed away shortly afterward, and rather than submitting to life in an orphanage, Strother simply took to the road. He drifted from job to job for a number of years, all the while fighting a battle with alcoholism; discovering the blues turned his life around, however, and after sobering up he began teaching himself guitar, honing his chops in virtual anonymity before recording his debut LP A Good Woman Is Hard to Find in 1992. The Highway Is My Home followed in 1995, and in 1997 Strother returned with It's My Time. He toured Europe several times and recorded Home at Last there, which saw release in 2001.
