The Alchemist [3:25] In the seven years since Munich-born, Los Angeles-based guitarist Nils became a fixture in the smooth jazz genre via his massive radio hit "Pacific Coast Highway," he hasn't become the A-list fixture at the big festivals and all-star cruises as he should be -- but his consistency in composing and recording funked-out, super-crisp electric guitar gems that soothe as they groove has been formidable. Perhaps it's because he set a high bar for himself writing a book called How to Make Your Guitar Talk. Or maybe because, as on the dynamic and infectious City Groove, he's always working with and drawing inspiration from an incredible array of all-star musical cohorts. From the simmering, brass-fired rock-soul of the title track through the bluesy old-school soul-jazz romp "Funk in da House," Nils' fluid and crackling lines dance and dart over the pockets created alternately by Ricky Lawson and Simon Phillips (drums) working with Alex Al and Darryl Jones (bass). Mitch Forman's piano and organ spots add a rich jazz and blues depth to Nils' lighthearted (but just gritty enough) pop/rock vibe. In a happy surprise of a moment, a duet between Nils and fellow genre guitar star Jeff Golub is a soaring thoughtful ballad, full of eloquent expression (think a classic crying Eric Clapton ballad) rather than a hard rock free-for-all (which these two could have done in a heartbeat). Born in 1983 in Hungary into a musical Gypsy family, she showed talent at an early age. She found and began singing jazz after high school, and in 2005 won the first prize and the public prize in the Shure Montreux Jazz Voice Competition. A label that searches for new talent far and wide, Atelier Sawano is now introducing her to jazz fans in Japan and beyond. Following her self-produced debut CD, Golden Earrings, comes a full-fledged new album produced for Atelier Sawano by the late Klaus Weiss, a superb German drummer who helped create many of Sawano's great jazz albums. Sz??ke is also aided by Weiss' frequent partner and bassist Thomas Stabenow, and a fellow Hungarian and wonderful pianist Robert Lakatos. Those familiar with the Sawano discography will realize that this is indeed a superb piano trio! Such talented and experienced musicians, however, do not seem to faze Sz??ke, who is undoubtedly the star of this recording. Unlike her previous album that reflected her eclectic musical interests, she sticks mostly to standards (except for the title song by Leon Russell and "Just The Way You Are" by Billy Joel), and she sings and swings them confidently. Modul 49_44 'Llyria' is the third album from Nik Bartsch's Ronin and follows on from 'Stoa' and 'Holon', the ECM recordings that established the exciting young Swiss band on the international scene. Leader and pianist Nik Bartsch's "modular" pieces still define the context of the group's music but the committed input of the individual Ronin members has lifted the work to the next level, blurring the distinctions between composition, improvisation and interpretation. Although this is his third album for ECM, Swiss pianist Nik Bartsch has been releasing albums of what he calls "zen funk" or "ritual groove music" since 2001. Sparse but always elegant, his compositions are pared-to-the-bone affairs consisting of crisply constructed acoustic piano patterns occasionally wreathed in electric Fender Rhodes ghost notes. Against slivers of melodies graced with a Satie-like simplicity, the rest of the musicians tug and gnaw at the rhythmic opportunities his pieces gleefully expose. In another situation the brass player, Sha, might be expected to run away with freewheeling solos; but here, like every other musician in the group, he stays close to the immediate space around the themes. His sax offers up soaring notes of purest silver, whilst his parping contra-bass clarinet often digs deep, doubling Bjorn Meyer's subterranean bass guitar runs. Sometimes the pair will lock horns, and then go in and out of phase with Bartsch's constantly tumbling rhythms. This creates a complex hive of activity that's both hugely entertaining and deeply rewarding. Similarly, drummer Kaspar Rast, who has worked with Bartsch since they were kids, keeps rock-solid time with only the most minimal of rolls and twists around the kit, keenly wedded to the less-is-more prin[beeep]le. With percussionist Andi Pupato adding exotic metallic dissonances and brilliantly imaginative counterpoints, their grooves quickly establish a relentless quality that sweeps up everything in its path. With everything so tightly controlled, it can sometimes feels akin to being inside a large, perfectly-turned clockwork mechanism. Yet it's this painstakingly created environment where even the tiniest of shifts in time or motion take on an almost cathartic grandeur. Frequently astonishing in the depth and richness of its conception, Bartsch's grasp and exploitation of tension and release is fascinating. His music thrillingly combines a Steve Reich-like minimalist aesthetic with the kind of effortless funk-punch reminiscent of a Headhunters-era Herbie Hancock. Dripping with hooks and irresistible choruses, "Don't Tell Me You Love Me," "Sing Me Away," and "Young Girl in Love" are simply outstanding songs. Anyone doubting the band's ability to rock out need only listen to the vicious bursts of "Eddie's Comin' Out Tonight" and "Play Rough." Teal's powerful jazz credentials are more to the fore on this album, however, notably in her light-stepping swing over a fast bass-walk on Cheek to Cheek, the Ella Fitzgerald scat-jam at the end, and the Cab Calloway hi-de-ho references in the finale of Moondance. Her clarity and controlled power allow her to make the much-travelled pop ballads Love Hurts and Breaking Up Is Hard to Do her own, but in replacing the sense of desolation in Love for Sale with a kind of plain-speaking resignation, she diminishes its meaning. Some may find many of the other lyrics too cheesy to be delivered without irony, and the Radio 2 vibe too pervasive.
