  1. Free Download 'Tis Not Our War: Avoiding Military Service in the Civil War North by Paul Taylor English | June 18th, 2024 | ISBN: 0811775380 | 457 pages | True PDF | 12.59 MB James McPherson's classic book For Cause & Comrades explained "why men fought in the Civil War"-and spurred countless other historians to ask and attempt to answer the same question. But few have explored why men did not fight. That's the question Paul Taylor answers in this groundbreaking Civil War history that examines the reasons why at least 60 percent of service-eligible men in the North chose not to serve and why, to some extent, their communities allowed them to do so. Did these other men not feel the same patriotic impulses as their fellow citizens who rushed to the enlistment office? Did they not believe in the sanctity of the Union? Was freeing men held in chains under chattel slavery not a righteous moral crusade? And why did some soldiers come to regret their enlistment and try to leave the military? 'Tis Not Our War answers these questions by focusing on the thoughts, opinions, and beliefs of average civilians and soldiers. Taylor digs deep into primary sources-newspapers, diaries, letters, archival manuscripts, military reports, and published memoirs-to paint a vivid and richly complex portrait of men who questioned military service in the Civil War and to show that the North was never as unified in support of the war as portrayed in much of America's collective memory. This book adds to our understanding of the Civil War and the men who fought-and did not fight-in it. 4. Free Download Maria Madalena Brito, "'The Slave Is a Human Person': Fernao Perez's 'de Restitutione' and the Debate on Slavery in Early Modern Portugal" English | ISBN: 3506794868 | 2024 | 389 pages | PDF | 4 MB With the edition, translation and study of a 16th moral theology treatise, Maria Madalena Brito shows how this discipline was the area par excellence for critical debate on slavery in Portugal at this time. This was substantial in comparison with what occurred in other areas of Portuguese culture. Any questioning of slavery then involved enormous theoretical and practical complexity as there was a conflict between what was ideal at the level of conscience and what was felt at the time as a condition for the economic prosperity of an entire empire. Neither Fernao Perez nor other Professors in Portugal condemned slavery in absolute terms. However, Perez and other theologians approached sensitive subjects, suggesting the limitation of slave trade, denouncing situations of injustice and violence towards the slave, demanding restitution of freedom to slaves who were not so by just title. They stressed the humanity of the slave based on their Christian conscience and on classical principles of natural law. 5. Free Download Frances Timbers, "'The Damned Fraternitie': Constructing Gypsy Identity in Early Modern England, 1500-1700" English | 2016 | ISBN: 1032402539, 1472462513 | EPUB | pages: 208 | 2.7 mb 'The Damned Fraternitie': Constructing Gypsy Identity in Early Modern England, 1500-1700 examines the construction of gypsy identity in England between the early sixteenth century and the end of the seventeenth century. Drawing upon previous historiography, a wealth of printed primary sources (including government documents, pamphlets, rogue literature, and plays), and archival material (quarter sessions and assize cases, parish records and constables's accounts), the book argues that the construction of gypsy identity was part of a wider discourse concerning the increasing vagabond population, and was further informed by the religious reformations and political insecurities of the time. The developing narrative of a fraternity of dangerous vagrants resulted in the gypsy population being designated as a special category of rogues and vagabonds by both the state and popular culture. The alleged Egyptian origin of the group and the practice of fortune-telling by palmistry contributed elements of the exotic, which contributed to the concept of the mysterious alien. However, as this book reveals, a close examination of the first gypsies that are known by name shows that they were more likely Scottish and English vagrants, employing the ambiguous and mysterious reputation of the newly emerging category of gypsy. This challenges the theory that sixteenth-century gypsies were migrants from India and/or early predecessors to the later Roma population, as proposed by nineteenth-century gypsiologists. The book argues that the fluid identity of gypsies, whose origins and ethnicity were (and still are) ambiguous, allowed for the group to become a prime candidate for the 'other', thus a useful tool for reinforcing the parameters of orthodox social behaviour. 10. Free Download Model-Driven Dependability Assessment of Software Systems By Simona Bernardi, José Merseguer, Dorina Corina Petriu (auth.) 2013 | 187 Pages | ISBN: 3642395112 | PDF | 6 MB Over the last two decades, a major challenge for researchers working on modeling and evaluation of computer-based systems has been the assessment of system Non Functional Properties (NFP) such as performance, scalability, dependability and security. In this book, the authors present cutting-edge model-driven techniques for modeling and analysis of software dependability. Most of them are based on the use of UML as software specification language. From the software system specification point of view, such techniques exploit the standard extension mechanisms of UML (i.e., UML profiling). UML profiles enable software engineers to add non-functional properties to the software model, in addition to the functional ones. The authors detail the state of the art on UML profile proposals for dependability specification and rigorously describe the trade-off they accomplish. The focus is mainly on RAMS (reliability, availability, maintainability and safety) properties. Among the existing profiles, they emphasize the DAM (Dependability Analysis and Modeling) profile, which attempts to unify, under a common umbrella, the previous UML profiles from literature, providing capabilities for dependability specification and analysis. In addition, they describe two prominent model-to-model transformation techniques, which support the generation of the analysis model and allow for further assessment of different RAMS properties. Case studies from different domains are also presented, in order to provide practitioners with examples of how to apply the aforementioned techniques.Researchers and students will learn basic dependability concepts and how to model them using UML and its extensions. They will also gain insights into dependability analysis techniques through the use of appropriate modeling formalisms as well as of model-to-model transformation techniques for deriving dependability analysis models from UML specifications. Moreover, software practitioners will find a unified framework for the specification of dependability requirements and properties of UML, and will benefit from the detailed case studies. 11. Free Download Lea Espinoza Garrido, "Mobility, Agency, Kinship: Representations of Migration Beyond Victimhood " English | ISBN: 3031607538 | 2024 | 287 pages | EPUB, PDF | 6 MB + 6 MB This volume offers new perspectives on the ways in which migrants use storytelling practices and kinship formations in order to navigate and modify spaces of sovereignty, and thus to re-write narratives portraying them as helpless and passive victims. It provides one of the first investigations that assembles multidisciplinary contributions to look beyond individual acts of migrant agency and toward the entanglements of individual and collective agency, formations of kinship structures, and feelings, expressions, and representations of community and (multiple) belonging(s). The contributions explore the interplay between agency, kinship, and migration from various fields, including sociology, psychology, philosophy, border studies, gender and queer studies, postcolonial studies, ecocriticism, film and media studies, and literary and cultural studies - with a special focus on interdisciplinary narrative theory. They address real and imagined assertions of migrant agency and kinship formations; draw on empirical research, interviews, and accounts of lived experiences; and analyze the role of narrative, media, and technologies in artistic, literary, and cinematic representations of migrant agency and kinship. By probing migrant identity discourses in different cultural and medial contexts, the contributions examine how narratives negotiate and challenge the unequal distribution of mobility, resources, and vulnerability that preconfigures many migrant lives; they also discuss narrative devices, storytelling techniques, and other representational strategies that migrants employ, as well as technologies that they draw on, to lay powerful claims on space and citizenship and to eschew established scripts of victimhood. As such, the volume addresses and embraces the tensions between vulnerability and agency that come to the fore when we try to understand the different ways in which migrants shape, and are shaped by, their (trans)local, material, economic, affective, social, cultural, and political realities. 13. Free Download Dina Siegel, "Mobile Banditry: East and Central European Itinerant Criminal Groups in the Netherlands" English | ISBN: 946236110X | 2014 | 152 pages | PDF | 7 MB Europe is increasingly being plagued by itinerant crime groups, a trend also known as 'mobile banditry.' Even though the phenomenon of mobile banditry has existed in Europe for centuries, in recent years great concern has risen about the increase in the number of gangs from East and Central Europe who have been committing various types of crimes in West European countries. This book provides an explanation and analysis of the historical, political, economic, and cultural backgrounds of the phenomenon 'itinerant criminal gangs' from the following perspectives: a) the lessons learned from comparable situations in the past; b) the inevitable negative effects of globalization; c) the power of attraction of the West; and d) the gulf between the rich and poor and between West and East Europe. An analysis of the connections between organized crime, shady entrepreneurs, and corrupt politicians in East and Central Europe on the one hand, and the relationship between migrants and criminal groups in the Netherlands on the other, provide an explanation on the dynamics of the markets in stolen goods. Based on 127 interviews and observations in the Netherlands, Poland, Lithuania, Bulgaria, and Romania, as well as an analysis of court files and literature, the research looks at the socio-cultural background of these criminals, how they operate, what happens to the stolen goods, and the efforts that the Dutch, Eastern/Central European states, and the European Union have initiated to combat this form of organized crime. 14. Free Download Mites: Ecology, Evolution & Behaviour: Life at a Microscale By David Evans Walter, Heather C. Proctor (auth.) 2013 | 494 Pages | ISBN: 9400771630 | PDF | 12 MB More than 40,000 species of mites have been described, and up to 1 million may exist on earth. These tiny arachnids play many ecological roles including acting as vectors of disease, vital players in soil formation, and important agents of biological control. But despite the grand diversity of mites, even trained biologists are often unaware of their significance. Mites: Ecology, Evolution and Behaviour (2nd edition) aims to fill the gaps in our understanding of these intriguing creatures. It surveys life cycles, feeding behaviour, reproductive biology and host-associations of mites without requiring prior knowledge of their morphology or taxonomy. Topics covered include evolution of mites and other arachnids, mites in soil and water, mites on plants and animals, sperm transfer and reproduction, mites and human disease, and mites as models for ecological and evolutionary theories. The Original Chinese Text of the Mashi Wentong with Chinese-English Character and Word Glossaries" English | 2018 | pages: 681 | ISBN: 3959354401 | PDF | 10,1 mb This Grammar on Literary Chinese by Ma Jianzhong (1845-1900) was the first of its kind ever to be written by a native Chinese on Chinese and was published in 1898. It came at a time when Imperial China was in decline not only by loss of her sovereignty to the then Western colonial powers and when there was a strong feeling of insecurity about the relevance of ancient native Chinese culture in a modern world and its continued existence under the rising pressure to modernise in order to cope with the West and the rest of the modern world. Chinese Language Planning and Reform for the purpose of creating a national standard language and to spread literacy in all parts of society was seen as an essential part of such a modernisation process. Ma's work was only a first step in a longer series of research work and language planning and reform projects to follow in the decades after him. Free Download Achim Lichtenberger, "Miscellaneous Objects: Final Publications from the Danish-german Jerash Northwest Quarter Project VI " English | ISBN: 2503607748 | 2024 | 350 pages | PDF | 7 MB The Decapolis city of Jerash has long attracted attention from travellers and scholars, due both to the longevity of the site and the remarkable finds uncovered during successive phases of excavation that have taken place from 1902 onwards. Between 2011 and 2016, a Danish-German team, led by the universities of Aarhus and Munster, focused their attention on the Northwest Quarter of Jerash - the highest point within the walled city - and this volume is the sixth in a series of books presenting the team's final results. In this volume, a wide range of miscellaneous items discovered in the Northwest Quarter are presented, ranging from prehistoric lithics to Ottoman pipes. Material finds covered include stone sculpture, utensils, and inscriptions, as well as bone objects, spindle whorls, and bread stamps, while some scientific analyses of jewellery and terracotta figurines complement the studies. These chapters ensure that all finds from the Northwest Quarter - no matter how small - are made available to researchers, with the contributions gathered here offering unique new insights into the material groups from Gerasa, later Jerash, and into the lives of the population of the city from a longue duree perspective. 18. Free Download Cristina Albu, "Mirror Affect: Seeing Self, Observing Others in Contemporary Art " English | ISBN: 1517900069 | 2016 | 272 pages | AZW3 | 2 MB For decades, contemporary artworks with reflective properties have stimulated public forms of spectatorship. According to Cristina Albu, these artworks, which can include elements such as mirrors, live video feedback, or sensors, draw attention to affective interdependence and mechanisms of social control. In Mirror Affect, Albu provides a historical account of mirroring processes in contemporary art and offers insight into the phenomenological and sociopolitical concerns that have inspired artists to stage processes of affective, perceptual, and behavioral mirroring between art viewers. Beginning with the 1960s, Albu charts the rise of interpersonal modes of art spectatorship. She reveals contemporary artists' strategic use of reflective and responsive interfaces to instill doubt in visual representation and appeal to active scrutiny of the changing social dynamics. She suggests that the mirroring processes envisioned by contemporary artists such as Joan Jonas, Dan Graham, Lynn Hershman Leeson, Olafur Eliasson, and Rafael Lozano-Hemmer trigger visual disjunctions to upset narcissistic inclinations. They invite viewers to see themselves in relation to others and to ponder their role within complex social systems. 20. Free Download Minneapolis Madams: The Lost History of Prostitution on the Riverfront By Penny A. Petersen 2013 | 240 Pages | ISBN: 0816665230 | EPUB | 8 MB Sex, money, and politics-no, it's not a thriller novel. Minneapolis Madams is the surprising and riveting account of the Minneapolis red-light district and the powerful madams who ran it. Penny Petersen brings to life this nearly forgotten chapter of Minneapolis history, tracing the story of how these "houses of ill fame" rose to prominence in the late nineteenth century and then were finally shut down in the early twentieth century. In their heyday Minneapolis brothels were not only open for business but constituted a substantial economic and political force in the city. Women of independent means, madams built custom bordellos to suit their tastes and exerted influence over leading figures and politicians. Petersen digs deep into city archives, period newspapers, and other primary sources to illuminate the Minneapolis sex trade and its opponents, bringing into focus the ideologies and economic concerns that shaped the lives of prostitutes, the men who used their services, and the social-purity reformers who sought to eradicate their trade altogether. Usually written off as deviants, madams were actually crucial components of a larger system of social control and regulation. These entrepreneurial women bought real estate, hired well-known architects and interior decorators to design their bordellos, and played an important part in the politics of the developing city.Petersen argues that we cannot understand Minneapolis unless we can grasp the scope and significance of its sex trade. She also provides intriguing glimpses into racial interactions within the vice economy, investigating an African American madam who possibly married into one of the city's most prestigious families. Fascinating and rigorously researched, Minneapolis Madams is a true detective story and a key resource for anyone interested in the history of women, sexuality, and urban life in Minneapolis. 22. Free Download Allison Margaret Bigelow, "Mining Language: Racial Thinking, Indigenous Knowledge, and Colonial Metallurgy in the Early Modern Iberian World " English | ISBN: 1469654385 | 2020 | 376 pages | AZW3 | 11 MB Mineral wealth from the Americas underwrote and undergirded European colonization of the New World; American gold and silver enriched Spain, funded the slave trade, and spurred Spain's northern European competitors to become Atlantic powers. Building upon works that have narrated this global history of American mining in economic and labor terms, Mining Language is the first book-length study of the technical and scientific vocabularies that miners developed in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries as they engaged with metallic materials. This language-centric focus enables Allison Bigelow to document the crucial intellectual contributions Indigenous and African miners made to the very engine of European colonialism. By carefully parsing the writings of well-known figures such as Cristobal Colon and Gonzalo Fernandez de Oviedo y Valdes and lesser-known writers such Alvaro Alonso Barba, a Spanish priest who spent most of his life in the Andes, Bigelow uncovers the ways in which Indigenous and African metallurgists aided or resisted imperial mining endeavors, shaped critical scientific practices, and offered imaginative visions of metalwork. Her creative linguistic and visual analyses of archival fragments, images, and texts in languages as diverse as Spanish and Quechua also allow her to reconstruct the processes that led to the silencing of these voices in European print culture.
