Intellectual Property and the New Global Japanese Economy
bookbb opublikował(a) temat w Książki obcojęzyczne
Intellectual Property and the New Global Japanese Economy By Ruth Taplin 2009 | 166 Pages | ISBN: 0415465974 | EPUB | 1 MB The Japanese economy is the second largest in the world and is becoming once more one of the most competitive. Despite the stagnation and deflation experienced during the 1990s, Japan has progressively become more aware of the need to be a global player, in particular under the radical administration of former Prime Minister Koizumi. A vigorous approach to intellectual property borrowed from the US and Europe, stressing the importance of innovation, assisted in kick-starting the Japanese economy again and has sustained its increasingly high performance. This book examines how Japan has used this new approach to intellectual property (IP) to revitalise its economy. It explains how IP has traditionally been used in Japan, and goes on to identify the ways in which this has changed in recent years, identifying the different facets of IP utilised to propel the Japanese economy to new heights: Firstly, by promoting IP through Technical Licensing Organisations (TLO) laws and uniting the universities with the needs of industry. Secondly, via radical changes to employees' rights to compensation through the landmark decisions made by the Tokyo District Court. Thirdly, by the streamlining of patenting applications and procedures through the Tokyo and Osaka District IP Courts, and the Japanese Patent Office. Fourthly, by internationalising its capital markets, as displayed by the cooperation between the Tokyo Stock Exchange and the London Stock Exchange (LSE) and other bourses. Overall, this book is essential reading for all those interested in understanding the modern Japanese economy, and how it is adapting to exploit the opportunities and challenges of an increasingly globalised world. Insurance Against Covariate Shocks : The Role of Index-Based Insurance in Social Protection in Low-Income Countries of Africa By Harold Alderman; Trina Haque; World Bank Staff 2007 | 48 Pages | ISBN: 0821370367 | PDF | 1 MB Uninsured risk had far-reaching consequences for rural growth as well as poverty reduction. A range of informal mechanisms to insure rural households against the impact of shocks, but they are a modest component of a risk layering strategy for well-off households and even less protective for low-income households. Formal insurance mechanisms have inherent market imperfections. State interventions to address these limitations have proven costly and generally are targeted poorly. Recent developments in microfinance as well as in insurance marketing have opened new possibilities for household risk reduction. Index insurance, such as weather indexing, addresses other inherent problems in insurance by using an indicator that is not affected by individual behaviour and may address monitoring costs and moral hazard. A number of innovations using index insurance are being tried currently in diverse settings ranging from India to Mongolia to Malawi. Marketing costs may limit the provision of such insurance to small farmers, but even in such cases microfinance institutes may serve as market intermediaries. Moreover, state and submational governments can use insurance to achieve countercyclical funding programs. In this vein, muni[beeep]l governments in Mexico have used insurance to finance disaster contingency while the World Food Program has insured a portion of its emergency assistance to Ethiopia. Humanitarian organizations and NGOs may also seek insurance in this manner. Innovations in Tax Compliance: Building Trust, Navigating Politics, and Tailoring Reform by Roel Dom, Anna Custers, Stephen Davenport English | March 14, 2022 | ISBN: 1464817553 | 236 pages | PDF | 3.25 Mb Recent decades have seen important progress in strengthening country tax systems. Yet many areas of reform have remained stubbornly resistant to major improvements. Overall, revenue collection still falls short of that needed for effective governance and service delivery. Tax collection is too often riddled with high rates of evasion among large corporations and the rich and by disproportionate, though often hidden, burdens on lower-income groups. As countries around the world deal with the large debt burdens induced by COVID-19, an in-depth look at how to strengthen tax systems is especially timely. Innovations in Tax Compliance: Building Trust, Navigating Politics, and Tailoring Reform takes a fresh look at tax reform. The authors draw on recent research and experience for their new conceptual framework to guide more effective approaches to reform. Building on the achievements of recent decades, they argue for a greater emphasis on the overlapping goals of building trust, navigating political resistance, and tailoring reform to unique local contexts―an emphasis achieved by identifying the most binding constraints on reform. This focus not only can lead to greater compliance, a fairer system, and higher revenues, but also can contribute to building state capacity, sustained political support for further reforms, and a stronger fiscal contract between citizens and governments. Inheritance Law and the Evolving Family By Ralph Brashier 2004 | 273 Pages | ISBN: 1592132219 | PDF | 1 MB Nontraditional families are today an important part of American family life. Yet when a loved one dies, our inheritance laws are often stingy even towards survivors in the nuclear family. With humor, enthusiasm, and a bit of righteous outrage, Ralph C. Brashier explores how probate laws ignore gender roles and marital contributions of the spouse, often to the detriment of the surviving widow; how probate laws pretend that unmarried couplesOCoparticularly gay and lesbian onesOCodo not exist; how probate laws allow a parent to disinherit even the neediest child; and how probate laws for nonmarital children, adopted children, and children born of surrogacy or other forms of assisted reproductive technology are in flux or simply don't exist. A thoughtful examination of the current state of probate law and the inability of legislators to recognize and provide for the broad range of families in America today, this book will be read by those with an interest in the relationship between families and the law across a wide range of academic disciplines." Inheritance in Contemporary America : The Social Dimensions of Giving Across Generations By Jacqueline L. Angel 2008 | 194 Pages | ISBN: 0801887631 | PDF | 1 MB With the baby boom generation on the cusp of retirement, life expectancies on the rise, and the nation's cultural makeup in flux, the United States is faced with social and policy quandaries that demand attention. How are elders to balance the competing claims of helping family members during their lifetime, saving for old age, and planning estates? What roles should the state, family, and individuals play in supporting people during later life? Are new familial gift-giving trends sustainable, and, if so, what effects might they have on future generations? "Inheritance in Contemporary America" tackles the complex legal, policy, and emotional issues that surround bequests and inheritances in an era of increasing longevity, broadening ethnicity, and unraveling social safety nets. Through empirical analyses, case studies, interviews, and anecdotes, Jacqueline L. Angel explains the historical nature of familial giving and how it is changing as the nation's demographics shift. She explores the legal, personal, and policy complexities involved in passing wealth down through generations and provides a cross-disciplinary context for exploring the indelible effects that newly unfolding inheritance practices will have on various societal cohorts and the nation in general. From nuclear and extended families to the state and nongovernmental bodies, Angel's engaging study explores how attitudes toward giving are evolving and confronts in stark terms the legacy that these shifts in attitude will leave. This book will be a vital tool for scholars and practitioners in gerontology, sociology, psychology, anthropology, economics, political science, and public policy. Infrastructure in Latin America and the Caribbean : Recent Developments and Key Challenges By Marianne Fay; Mary Morrison 2006 | 148 Pages | ISBN: 0821366769 | PDF | 1 MB This book reviews Latin America's experience with infrastructure reform over the last fifteen years. It argues that the region's infrastructure has suffered from public retrenchment and unrealistic expectations about private involvement. Poor infrastructure now hampers productivity, growth, and poverty reduction. Addressing this requires more and better spending, and acceptance that governments remain central to infrastructure provision and supervision, although the private sector still has an important role to play.
