Teamed with rising young star, trumpeter Freddie Hubbard, and the wonderful tenor saxophonist Hank Mobley fresh off stints with Donald Byrd and Art Blakey, Drew is joining the ranks of the premier mainstream jazz pianists just prior to moving permanently to Europe. He's a complementary piece of the puzzle as a player, but stirs the drink as the composer of all of these very fine hard bop vehicles. Bassist Sam Jones and especially drummer Louis Hayes contribute mightily to the beats that keep Hubbard and Mobley flying on this recording, whose energy runs contrary to the more subtle, suggestive title. The band is roaring out of the gate on the title track in a Blakey-like stance, where Drew's rambling piano fortifies the under-the-surface horns. There's no messing around during the straight-ahead, fleet "Lion's Den," as the steady Hayes drives the combo, and Jones masterfully commands held tension-and-release segments. Toning it down into the blues spectrum, "Funk-Cosity" offers a beautiful melodic line where the identity might be typical, but the individualism of the performers is not. There's deft unison playing between the very compatible Hubbard and Mobley during the simplified "Groovin' the Blues," and even more pronounced on the ultra-melodic "The Pot's On," a gem of a tune that swings with a religious fervor via the adept drumming of Hayes. The lone downtempo track, "Ballade," is a real beauty as the trumpeter and tenor saxophonist wax poetic, but it is Drew whose cascading piano and deeply emotional romantic forays come across symphonically, like a young Erroll Garner. This is an extraordinary recording that reveals more upon repeat listenings. One does wish there was alternate or bonus material from this fine jazz band, but as is, it's the best of Drew as a leader aside from his quintessential work as a consummate sideman. Three songs come from Burnside ("Miss Maybelle," the frantic shuffle "Goin' Down South," and "Shake 'Em on Down"), while most of the rest are traditional, including the roaring "France Chance" and "Cocaine Bill," where the bass does a perfect imitation of a cakewalk tuba. Brown lets his trademark slide sing throughout, with a wonderfully raw tone, while his voice carries the weight of years heavily -- he doesn't just sing the blues, he lives them. To hear him on the goodbye of "Fare Thee Well Blues" is to experience loneliness. With a tight band of Cedric Burnside and Takeeshi Imura, he can handle anything, put the grease on it, and take it down home. Most players coming up tend to ignore the basic triads, minor/major pentatonics and blues scales that they rocked out to in the past, in favor of erudite jazz modes and exotic scales. Net result? Too much time in the shed chasing their tales searching for sounds that were already under their fingertips. Kenny Wessel's Shades of Jazz will open your eyes and ears to a virtually endless stream of creative and very sophisticated jazz harmonies - all generated simply by tweaking basic triads, pentatonics and scales. Artist: Kenny G Title: G Force Year Of Release: 1996 Label: BMG / CAMDEN [bPCD1091] Genre: Jazz-Funk, Smooth Jazz Quality: FLAC (image+.cue+.log,scans) Total Time: 39:24 Total Size: 297 MB Review by Alex Henderson, All Music: Kenny G's work can be divided into three main categories: first, his improvisatory fusion efforts as a Jeff Lorber sideman in the late '70s; second, his R&B-oriented albums of 1982-1985; and third, the elevator Muzak he has specialized in since 1986. Falling into the second category, G Force is a fairly decent urban contemporary release that clearly benefits from the input of Kashif (who serves as executive producer). Kashif was hot at the time, and the R&B singer/producer/songwriter had been burning up the charts with hits by Evelyn "Champagne" King, George Benson, Howard Johnson and himself. Kashif's stamp is all over this sleek album; you can hear it on both the tunes with R&B vocals ("Hi, How Ya Doin'" and "Do Me Right") and groove-oriented instrumentals like "I've Been Missin' You" and "I Wanna Be Yours." G Force, Kenny G's second album, is a long way from the adventurous fusion Kenny G had recorded with Lorber, and the sax solos he was taking in 1983 were hardly breathtaking. But thanks to Kashif's parti[beeep]tion, G Force is an enjoyable, R&B-oriented date and is probably the best album he did as a leader (which isn't saying a lot, considering how boring most of his subsequent projects would be). Of the many benefits borne out of the age of information, the existence of Internet chatrooms and e-mail has created unparalleled opportunities for communication. Such has been the experience of the musicians paired on this disc, but their story goes well beyond mere online exchanges. On the one hand, Kenny Werner is simply one of the boss piano players around on the international jazz scene, and notwithstanding his extensive sideman duties with many of the greats, his own list of credits only confirms the fact that he is one of them himself. On the other hand, alto saxophonist R??mi Bolduc has earned his stripes on the Montreal scene over the last 15 years, and this recording clearly shows his abilities to work with the best. Now in his early forties, he spent some time in the Apple back in the early 90's, honing his skills with Steve Coleman while hanging out with the likes of Larry Grenadier, Adam Rogers and Ben Monder. About three years ago, R??mi decided to approach the pianist for a lesson, having transcribed and studied his music beforehand, but within 15 minutes, Werner let his visitor know that the best way to learn was to just go for it and play together rather than expect any formal instruction. A nice vote of confidence indeed. Since then, their musical relationship has been cemented onstage (a performance at the Montreal International Jazz Festival), pursued via the Net and now finally documented on disc. Always fresh and spontaneous in its exchanges, the duo of R??mi Bolduc and Kenny Werner breaks down the usual barriers separating solo and accompanying instruments. Not only are these kindred spirits able enough to re-harmonize tunes at will, but they can also turn on a dime and launch into mellifluous cadenzas that are rhythmically fluid yet never out of bounds. With such prime ingredients, it's not surprising that these top-notch performers have succeeded in producing more than run-of-the-mill 'tchats' but a wide range of engaging musical conversations.
