Escape Velocity (5:18) This is the second album by Trinity Laban graduate and 2014 MOBO Awards nominee Peter Edwards, his first being 2014's Safe And Sound. Edwards was a member of a group led by the late trumpeter Abram Wilson and is currently a member of vocalist Zara McFarlane's band. Opening with an infectious Latin beat, "Samba City" recalls the foot- tapping imperative of Chick Corea's Return To Forever era. A calmer mood ensues with "Loved Ones" recalling the blues-infused, chordal-rich piano of Joe Zawinul during his time with the Julian "Cannonball" Adderley Quintet. The more rhythmically complex "Groove Swing Funk" certainly matches its title and with a memorable theme it conjures-up an evocation of the Dudley Moore Trio in full flight. This album offers a veritable potpourri of styles, such as the lively, swinging "The Runaround" adorned by semi-pastiche Erroll Garner-like swathes of piano. The title track sees Edwards on slinky Fender Rhodes backed by a keen sheening rhythm from Moses Boyd, the drummer half of the MOBO 2015 award-winning duo Binker and Moses. The straight-ahead "Flying High" with Edwards returning to acoustic piano precedes the slow blues of "Down But Not Out"; reminiscent of Ramsey Lewis it's embellished by an excellent pizzicato bass solo from Max Luthert. The final number "Escape Velocity" has the trio in expansive mood, the piece distinguished by a repeated hook-like motif which eventually all-but closes-out the piece. The award-winning Israeli jazz trio led by guitarist Yotam Silberstein debuts The Arrival with a most striking display of energy, confidence, and ability. Joined by musicians and close friends bassist Gilad Abro and drummer Doron Tirosh, the trio is serious in its execution of music that ranks with contemporaries such as Bobby Broom, Jesse Van Ruller, Kurt Rosenwinkel, and Liberty Ellman. Silberstein plays beyond his youth with empathy, poise, and the goods to pull it all together. His phrasing, comping, and punctuated solo style prove his ability and give a timeless feel to the music as the trio swings hard. Abro and Tirosh are equally well rounded, as the music will attest. When listening to the opening selection, it would seem that this is just your standard Grant Green/Wes Montgomery-influenced fare. But a close observation (which one can hardly pull from a sound sample) reveals some fierce playing on many levels. This becomes clear on the fiery "Frythm," which starts with a heated guitar and bass vamp and opens up to stellar solos upheld by tight drum work. On the hip "Blues For 007" the trio captures the vibe perfectly with guitar trills and a nice drum solo. The bulk of the compositions were written by Silberstein and cover hard to post bop themes with aggressive swing and heady interplay, but true to the art form, the trio keeps things fresh with on-the-spot improvisations. From the varying tempo changes of "I Hate U Blues" to the free and funky "Haper" and Cole Porter's "Just One of Those Things," the music signals that these young cats are for real. Jersey Bounce From the first tune, "Sonnymoon for Two" to the last, "Jersey Bounce", Greig's warm and woody tone (played on a gorgeous vintage ES-175) swings with fervor and delight as he exhibits a strong melodic playing style that is exceedingly musical, developed, and right on the money. From burn ("Minority", "Melissa"), to bluesy ("Sonnymoon for Two", "Jersey Bounce"), to bossa ("Manha De Carnival"), Greig is a dynamic guitarist who sounds right at home with the tunes he has chosen for this date. His playing style is fluid and smooth as he navigates through the changes with a confidence and ease that speaks of musical maturity and skill which is what I enjoyed most about Greig's playing. His lines are clearly developed with a logical direction that speaks volumes about dedication to one's craft. This is player who has obviously listened to the best and has learned his lessons well. Plus he can write cool tunes ("Melissa", "Two-Part Strutt" and "Cianciana"). It's no wonder he was a popular sideman for so long. And speaking of sidemen, where would the "Trio" be without the remaining members of Greig's group: Paul Wiggins on organ and Harry Ellis on drums. Both players take their roles as musical supporters very seriously as they lay down the harmonic and rhythmic foundations for Greig's melodic musings. And in true organ trio fashion, organ and guitar share the solo spotlight as each player lends his own particular personality to the changes with Wiggins' displaying an amusing penchant for quoting other tunes in his solos (check out Greig's original composition "Melissa" for a taste.) Through all this, Ellis keeps the time steady and the tunes energized, while getting to shine during a few "trading fours" sections, making this CD a definite enjoyable listen. If you are a student or fan of jazz guitar and appreciate those who are trying to keep the jazz flame burning bright, then pick up a copy of Warren Greig's "Warren Greig Trio". 'Telling Jokes' is a musical story of a doomed love affair illustrated by the seasons. Here original songs are punctuated by standards to paint a musical portrait of a year in the life of a sweet and sour relationship. "Spring is Here", "Summertime" and "Autumn Leaves" each depict the various seasons and a Steve Plews original, "Like the melting Snow", concludes this romantic odyssey. Tina displays her versatility and sensitivity to melody and harmony, with a performance of great depth. The music could be described as "genreless" jazz, as a "theme - instrumental solo - theme" approach is rarely employed. Instead the focus is on Tina's voice as an instrument, her navigation of some new approaches to well-established standards and her interpretations of Steve Plews' songs. The trio is completed by Gavin Barrass on double bass and Johnny Hunter on drums. There are guest appearances from Steve Waterman (trumpet), Alan Barnes (reeds) and The New World Ensemble (strings). Tina May was born in Gloucestershire, where she was influenced greatly by her parents jazz record collection, containing such illustrious composers and artistes as Duke Ellington and Fats Waller. Raised among musicians; her brother, Jean Beauvoir, is the renowned hard rock phenomenon - performer/singer/songwriter/producer (The Ramones, Kiss, The Plasmatics), her other brother is a proficient bass player. At 15 she moved to Paris to attend the American University while pursuing her artistic passions; acting and singing. Her debut single "Waste my Time" was released a few years later. After her BA she obtained an MBA in the US, and worked her way up the corporate ladder, ultimately becoming Director of Business Development for Southern Europe and Africa for a US-based high-tech company. At the same time, Malou kept her passions going by recording and acting from time to time. By the end of the 90's Malou had decided to give up the world of business to concentrate wholly on her singing and acting. She quickly secured engagements in leading venues around the world, including in Dubai, Rio, Beirut, London, and in Paris where she performed for two years as the lead singer at the renowned Paradis Latin. Then, more recording; a featured artist for Universal (Datafolk); M-Tracks; co-writing and recording with artists in diverse styles -- Hip Hop, Dance, House -- co-signing many of her tracks with DJ's and lending her versatile voice to different productions while continuing to compose on her own. A chance encounter in a London venue with a jazz drummer led her to sign up for a Jazz course being held in a chateau near Paris in 2006. It was there that she discovered the beauty and freedom of singing jazz. One evening, after one of several dates at the Petit Journal Montparnasse, performing with her R&B band, she wandered into The Swan, a small club to see a friend perform. Fate struck in the person of Jean Chaudron, who immediately upon hearing her sing, proposed to produce a jazz album built around her vocal style. AN EVENING AT THE SWAN with the Jean Chaudron Trio is the fruit of that collaboration. Norway, this live set by pianist Jay McShann is a delight from start to finish. The blues veteran is in great form as he devotes nearly half of the release to his trio, which includes bassist Keter Betts and drummer Jackie Williams, and occasionally lightly sings along. The opener, "Cruisin' the Blues," features McShann's lively yet economical style of playing, along with a fine solo by Betts, while his lush interpretation of the old chestnut "Moonlight in Vermont" achieves a new degree of romanticism. But many fans will devour the appearances with special guests. Phil Woods, the greatest living alto saxophonist, sits in during McShann's sauntering blues "Kewpie Doll" and a rollicking take of Charlie Parker's "Yardbird Suite." Tenor saxophonist Flip Phillips, in his eighties (as was the leader) at the time of the performance, jointly improvises with McShann the strutting "Flippin' the Blues," and they follow it up with a swinging "All of Me." Phillips' impressive blowing belies his age during the timeless ballad "As Time Goes By" and an energetic "Sweet Georgia Brown." David "Fathead" Newman sits in for two McShann originals, the funky "Crazy Legs and Friday Strut" and the gospel-tinged "Moanin' Blues." Too bad there's no video of this music.
