We've added the work of another Louisiana record man, Sam Montel from Baton Rouge, to the vast stockpile of material in the vaults of J.D. Miller, Eddie Shuler, Floyd Soileau and Jake Graffagnino. Sam (originally Montalbano) got into the music business when his childhood friend Jimmy Clanton hit the charts. Sam became his road manager and the whole scene got into his blood. He decided to start his own record label when only 18 years old. His first release, Lester Robertson's 'My Girl Across Town', is included here, as is a previously unissued outing from Robertson. The Montel label had considerable success with artists including John Fred, Dale & Grace and the Boogie Kings, all attracting strong sales. We will be pulling out more R&B, swamp pop and rockin' goodies from these vaults for future releases in the "By The Bayou" series. The other label owners - J.D. Miller from Crowley, Eddie Shuler from Lake Charles, Floyd Soileau from Ville Platte and Jake Graffagnino from Opelousas- have all had recordings featured on our earlier CDs. Like Sam, they could all spot talent and got the best out of their artists. It means Ace has the opportunity to bring you dynamic tracks from an area of the USA so very rich in talent. In addition to the talents of the lead vocalists, the backing musicians on many of the tracks are also very accomplished. Guitar Gable is heard on many titles, as is Katie Webster on piano, sax giant Lionel Torrence, drummers Jockey Etienne and Warren Storm and Lazy Lester, who would play whatever instrument was asked of him; all are featured on many of the Crowley recordings. Classie Ballou's band was used often at Goldband, while the Upsetters, Little Richard's former outfit, can be heard on Lester Robertson's tracks. The excitement of discovering new material such as the track by Tabby Thomas, the previously unknown and romping version of 'Flat Foot Sam' by TV Slim and the downright nasty 'Oh Mama (Cajun Blues)' by Classie Ballou is undiminished. Bracketing them with other fabulous unknown recordings, unissued alternates and long deleted masterpieces is a pleasure and a privilege. Unfortunately, the new Stax didn't get very far -- though Fantasy has fared well with reissues of Stax's 1968-1975 output, none of the albums that came out on the new Stax in the late '70s were big sellers. But while For the Real Feeling suffered from disappointing sales, its material was generally decent and sometimes excellent. Produced by David Porter (who co-wrote many Stax smashes with Isaac Hayes) and Lester Snell, Jr., For the Real Feeling came out on a label that was famous for Memphis soul but often sounds like it could have been recorded for Philadelphia International. Indeed, Porter and Snell seem to be taking some hints from Gamble & Huff and their dis[beeep]les on disco-influenced items like "Move Me -- Move Me," "Hang on Louie," and "When, Where and What Time" -- Brown's Aretha Franklin-influenced vocals are tough and gritty, but the production is very sleek, clean, and orchestrated. The producers don't turn Brown into an all-out dancefloor diva ? la Gloria Gaynor, Linda Clifford, or Loleatta Holloway, although the influence of Northern soul/disco is certainly there. The subject of this 2CD collection, Nappy Brown is not usually in the mix but after you have listened to this collection of his singles released between 1954 and 1962 you will certainly be wondering why. Hear Brown's voice bellow and roar across these 54 tracks and on hits like "Don't Be Angry", "Pitter Patter" and "It Don't Hurt No More". The gospel delivery and arrangement of "The Right Time" caught the attention of a young Ray Charles who was currently hitting the big time with outrageous blues versions of gospel songs. He covered it and retitled it "(Night Time Is) The Right Time" and secured a hit that eventually went on to become a standard. Highlighted by three hit singles written by Nickolas Ashford and Valerie Simpson (who composed two of the four hit songs on the first Gaye/Terrell duets LP, United), You're All I Need was recorded throughout 1966 and 1967 and features two Top 10 Billboard Hot 100 hits, "Ain't Nothing Like the Real Thing" and "You're All I Need to Get By". It peaked at #60 on the U.S. Billboard 200 Album Chart. You're All I Need was the two singers' final collaboration effort, as Terrell would turn ill following recording, before succumbing to a brain tumor in 1970. The album was recorded in 1966 and 1967 during the time Gaye and Terrell's first collaboration album United was released. After recording You're All I Need, Tammi Terrell collapsed onstage while performing with Gaye at the Hampden-Sydney College homecoming in Virginia. She was later diagnosed with a brain tumor, and could no longer record nor perform live. I Almost Lost My Mind (4:16) Bespectacled and velvet-smooth in the vocal department, pianist Ivory Joe Hunter appeared too much mild-mannered to be a rock & roller. But when the rebellious music first crashed the American consciousness in the mid-'50s, there was Ivory Joe, deftly delivering his blues ballad "Since I Met You Baby" right alongside the wildest pioneers of the era. Hunter was already a grizzled R&B vet by that time who had first heard his voice on a 1933 Library of Congress cylinder recording made in Texas (where he grew up). An accomplished tunesmith, he played around the Gulf Coast region, hosting his own radio program for a time in Beaumont before migrating to California in 1942. It was a wise move since Hunter -- whose real name was Ivory Joe, incidentally (perhaps his folks were psychic!) -- found plenty of work pounding out blues and ballads in wartime California. He started his own label, Ivory Records, to press up his "Blues at Sunrise" (with Johnny Moore's Three Blazers backing him), and it became a national hit when leased to Leon Rene's Exclusive imprint in 1945. Another Hunter enterprise, Pacific Records, hosted a major hit in 1948 when the pianist's "Pretty Mama Blues" topped the R&B charts for three weeks. At whatever logo Hunter paused from the mid-'40s through the late '50s, his platters sold like hot cakes. For Cincinnati-based King in 1948-1949, he hit with "Don't Fall in Love with Me," "What Did You Do to Me," "Waiting in Vain," and "Guess Who." At MGM, then new to the record biz, he cut his immortal "I Almost Lost My Mind" (another R&B chart-topper in 1950), "I Need You So" (later covered by Elvis), and "It's a Sin." Signing with Atlantic in 1954, he hit big with "Since I Met You Baby" in 1956 and the two-sided smash "Empty Arms"/"Love's a Hurting Game" in 1957. Hunter's fondness for country music reared its head in 1958. Upon switching to Dot Records, he scored his last pop hit with a cover of Bill Anderson's "City Lights." Hunter's Dot encores went nowhere; neither did typically mellow outings for Vee-Jay, Smash, Capitol, and Veep. Epic went so far as to recruit a simmering Memphis band (including organist Isaac Hayes, trumpeter Gene "Bowlegs" Miller, and saxist Charles Chalmers) for an LP titled The Return of Ivory Joe Hunter that he hoped would revitalize his career, but it wasn't meant to be. Helping them shine resplendently is Eric McClinton from one-time Motown outfit Eric & The Vikings. Not only do we have a good album here we have discerning liner notes from 'me old mucker', David Cole of In The Basement magazine. This man's devotion to quality music and his expansive knowledge are first rate and it is fitting to employ him for liner notes such as these. I doubt anyone will not own the KILLER "Feeling Lucky Lately" already as it has been included on various EMI projects since the late 1980s, and I was loathed to splash out on the Â?27.99 price tag for this album when it was released in Japan. Thankfully this is another gem released in the deluge of quality bargains from Capitol. Although I love this album and this particular style, I cannot listen to this set completely in one sitting. It does begin to merge after a while, but singularly and independently most songs are brilliant and I dare you not to bask in Alyson and Meli'sa's soulful vocals and scratchy summery vibe of "You're The Winner". Songs such as this remind me on a daily basis of how Black America has lost the plot and any ability to make decent dance floor material, bar the quality work made on the House / Garage front. The melody of "Hold On" owes more to Shalamar and the Solar sound than anything else and this, to me, is very good indeed. Here, Eric (minus the Vikings!) delivers his smooth vocals and adds some seasoned experience to the relative youthfulness of his companions. Another favourite inclusion on here is "When The Lover Strikes" which is more midtempo than most cuts on offer here. Again, Eric, takes the lead and the vocal nuance twists in a fashion that we more appreciate with Chic. My favourite song is the KILLER ballad, "I Want To Be Your Everything". This epitomises all things Summery and one can easily slip on the old rose tinted glasses with this material. Oh, I love this mellow, mellow flavour and it is fair to say that Capitol had a serious grip on that back in the early 1980s. 'I think I like U' ft Mycah Chevalier and Sydni Marie is a bright up tempo groove. 'All Those Things' is a jazzy Soul down tempo groove. 'Beautiful' is an acoustic piano backed ballad duet with Brian Christopher. The two stand out cuts though are 'Moments4Love' a mid tempo dancer and 'Smile4me' a lovely bright up tempo tribute to her late father. Good solid album throughout from Gwendolyn.
