For what began as something of a side project in 2011 for husband and wife Michael Weston King & Lou Dalgleish, My Darling Clementine is now very much centre stage with 3 albums, over 400 shows across Europe and N. America, some ingenious musical collaborations, accolades and awards, and an ever growing fan base with a genuine love of their music. Still Testifying is a further step away from the "countrypolitan" style of their much lauded debut How Do You Plead? And the 2013 follow up The Reconciliation? The pedal steel has been joined by horns, the twang has given way to wah-wah & groove guitar, and the fiddle replaced by strings. This is more Delaney & Bonnie than George & Tammy, revealing a further move away from Classic Country as they embrace Gospel and Country Soul, channelling the likes of Dan Penn, Micky Newbury, Goffin & King and Bacharach & David. Still Testifying may have been recorded in South London over the summer of 2016, but the warm southern winds of Muscle Shoals, Alabama, and New Orleans, Louisiana were clearly blowing along Tooting High Street, straight into the Gold Top Studio. And yet, the English north wind doth also blow, down from the Lancastrian and Yorkshire moors. A Simple Song In common with many private pressings, the only album by Madden & Harris is both imitative of some famous artists and not nearly as good as the best releases by their inspirations. Yet on the other hand, like many private pressings, Fool's Paradise is interesting in that it has an unpredictability and homespun (though not lo-fi) idiosyncrasy of the sort that almost every major-label big-budget release ironed out, particularly in the mid-'70s, when this came out. It's placid, pleasant early-'70s-style folk-rock with a dash of progressive rock influence, sounding fairly British in its appropriation of both approaches, although the duo was based in Sydney. In some senses it's fairly standard stuff of its ilk, with a haunting though not outstandingly innovative melodic air that recalls olden pre-industrial British times. There's also a song cycle feel in which the concept remains elusive, despite the four-part "Fool's Paradise" suite that serves as the closing track. But it's not just the usual rural hippie-folkie trip, with some imaginative use of synthesizers and strings embellishing the arrangements, as well as dis[beeep]lined interplay between the vocal harmonies that has a slight classical/choral grandeur. Angel Band Twenty-one years after the first album Old & In the Way came the second, an amazing development for a group that existed for only nine months and about 30 gigs in 1973. That High Lonesome Sound, like its predecessor, Old & In the Way, was drawn from the group's stand at the Boarding House in San Francisco in October 1973. And like that release, it combined traditional bluegrass material, in this case standards like "Orange Blossom Special" and "Uncle Pen," with interpolations from the world of rock & roll ("The Great Pretender") and new originals that touched on contemporary issues (Peter Rowan's "Lonesome L.A. Cowboy," a comment on the Southern California country-rock scene of the time). Old & In The Way was a great crossover album, largely because the bandmembers had enjoyed careers in rock, especially banjo player and singer Jerry Garcia, moonlighting from his day job in the Grateful Dead. What was less-well-known was that the group had real roots in the music, as Neil V. Rosenberg pointed out in the second album's liner notes. Four of the five members had experience in bluegrass, and two had been members of Bill Monroe's Blue Grass Boys. Martha (4:35) Bemo Prince gave up music in the 1980s after a few high profile opportunities in Nashville didn't go as planned. He moved back home to Columbia, SC and stopped writing music. In 2016, after a series of heart attacks, Bemo's songs started playing in his head again, along with the realization his grand kids had never heard his music and may never get the chance. When Bemo asked an old friend for advice about recording some demos to leave behind, the friend's son, Daniel Machado, a local musician and record producer, saw an opportunity for a larger project: a lost classic country album. Bemo began recording iPad demos of his music, one song at a time, as the music came back to him. Using these demos, Daniel and co-producer Stephen Russ, began discussing ideas for recording full-band studio versions of the songs. After months of rehearsing with Bemo, Daniel's band began a two-day live recording session to capture 9 songs as authentically as possible. Will the Circle Be Unbroken Friends always meant something special to the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band their 1972 breakthrough, Will the Circle Be Unbroken, was filled with them so it only makes sense that the group rounded up a bunch of pals for a 50th anniversary concert held at Nashville's Ryman Auditorium on September 14, 2015. Released a year later, Circlin' Back: Celebrating 50 Years does indeed play like a celebration. Revisiting an equal portion of hits and traditional tunes, the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band sound as deep and wise as the Nashville veterans did when they guested on Will the Circle Be Unbroken, but the nice thing about the Circlin' Back concert is that it takes into account the smoother hits the band had in the '80s: Rodney Crowell and Alison Krauss sit in on "An American Dream" and Jimmy Ibbotson plays on "Fishin' in the Dark." Here, they're presented in stripped-down arrangements that nevertheless echo the soft rock gloss of the hit singles, and when combined with rollicking bluegrass, rustic folk, and straight-ahead country, it results in a full portrait of what the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band is all about. Governors Cup The Kentucky Headhunters created a hybrid of honky tonk, blues, and Southern rock that appealed to fans of both rock and country music. The origins of the Kentucky Headhunters lie in 1968, when Fred and Richard Young began playing together with their cousins Greg Martin and Anthony Kenney at the Youngs' grandmother's house. Mark Orr also later joined them. The first incarnation of the band was called the Itchy Brothers, and the group played together informally for over a decade. After about 13 years, the bandmembers began launching separate careers: Richard Young went off to write songs for Acuff-Rose, while Fred Young began touring with country beauty Sylvia. Martin became a member of Ronnie McDowell's band, while Kenney dropped out of music. In 1985, Martin decided to reassemble the Itchy Brothers. When Kenney declined to rejoin the group, Martin remembered Doug Phelps, whom he had met while on tour with McDowell. Phelps joined the new project, which was named the Kentucky Headhunters. Besides Martin and Phelps, the band also included the Young brothers and Doug's brother Ricky Lee Phelps. The Headhunters started playing twice monthly on The Chitlin' Show, a program on Munfordville, Kentucky radio station WLOC. From these 90-minute performances, the Headhunters built up a following. They sent an eight-song demo to Mercury, and soon after, the label signed the group. The original demo tape was remixed, and became the basis of the band's first album, 1989's Pickin' on Nashville, which received overwhelmingly positive reviews upon its release and quickly became a hit. "Dumas Walker" reached number 15 in the spring of 1990, followed by the group's biggest hit, the number six "Oh, Lonesome Me." In 1991, the Headhunters released their second effort, Electric Barnyard. The album received mixed reviews, couldn't muster a single, and sold weakly. In summer 1992, the Phelps brothers left the group to form Brothers Phelps, a more traditional country group. The remaining Headhunters brought ex-Itchy Brothers Anthony Kenney and Mark Orr to the group, and the rehashed lineup released Rave On! in 1993. The album marked a progression toward bluesy Southern rock, which came to fruition later that same year with That'll Work, a collaboration with former Chuck Berry pianist Johnnie Johnson. In 1996, Doug returned on lead vocals, and a year later the band issued Stompin' Grounds. Songs from the Grass String Ranch followed in 2000, and Soul appeared in spring 2003. Big Boss Man was released in 2005 and Flying Under the Radar in 2006, both from CBUJ Entertainment. Dixie Lullabies, the group's 12th album, and first studio recording of new original material since 2003, appeared from Red Dirt Records in 2011. In 2015, the Headhunters released another collaborative album with Johnnie Johnson, Meet Me in Bluesland, drawn from unissued sessions recorded in 2003, two years before Johnson's death. Just before entering the studio to record their next studio LP, bandmates Richard and Fred Young lost their father.
