Review by Jason Ankeny of All Music Guode: With Love Trippin' the Spinners transitioned from a decade they helped define to a new decade dominated by the last days of disco and the emergence of rap--the presence of producer/arranger Michael Zager portends a full-blown paean to dancefloor sensibilities, but Zager wisely emphasizes the group's rapturous harmonies, creating a Spinners record for the Eighties instead of an Eighties record for the Spinners. But the songs are uniformly bland--it speaks volumes that the album's biggest hit was a medley, "Cupid/I've Loved You for a Long Time"--and not even the vocals can salvage duds like "Split Decision" and "Heavy on the Decision." Once the vocals kick in with Athletic Mic League's "R.U?," though, it's clear that a vocal track can have a large impact after a spate of heavyweight warm-ups. The only problem is that the rappers can't compete with all the hero instrumentalists on display; for every DJ Spinna or Jay Dee or Pete Rock in the producer's chair, there's not even one rhymer present able to keep it up while their ace tracks bang in the background.
