The Breakers Though they had been collaborating on music together for awhile, the Montreal-based duo Valleys made their debut with 2009's Sometimes Water Kills People on Semprini Records. Multi-instrumentalists Matilda Perks (keys, guitar, sequencer) & Marc St. Louis (guitar, keyboards, drums) both write and sing, crafting dreamily atmospheric electronic pop with guitars that's filled with melancholy emotion, but is also unfailingly melodic and sweet. They followed up the album with a couple of EPs (2010's Stoner and 2011's River Phoenix) as they played gigs and honed their sound. The duo signed with New York's Kanine Records and began working on an album with producer Alec Dippie from British post-punk group the Monochrome Set. Are You Just Going to Stand There and Talk Weird All Night? is filled with loss (for Perks it was the passing of family members, for St. Louis it was the ending of a relationship) and different ways of dealing with it (Perks' Shambhala Buddhist beliefs, St. Louis' maturation process). Pretty Horses Snakefarm are the collaboration between singer Anna Domino and her guitarist partner Michael Delory. 'Songs From My Funeral' could well be described as a concept album in that the themes for the songs are murder ballads, songs about death and the consequences of the opening up of the American Midwest through the building of railways; sometimes more than one motif is included in a song. Even the lullaby sung at the end is distinctly unsettling. All the songs are reinterpretations of traditional American folk ballads. An interesting, if somewhat academic, discussion on the resurgent interest of these American folk classics and the relation between them and the psyche of present day post-millennium America can be found in Anat Pick's essay: 'Death and Democracy: Snakefarm's Songs from my Funeral and the New World Gothic'. Now all this sounds quite gloomy and depressing, but it's not. Thanks to Snakefarm's reworking of these folk classics, the results whilst dark and atmospheric are actually surprisingly up-tempo. The darkness comes from Anna Domino's vocals, which through the use of filters and other effects sounds cool, sultry but at times also detached and remote. There are distinct similarities here to the voices of Laurie Anderson and of Margo Timmins (singer with the Cowboy Junkies). Decker's backgrounds in music, poetry, and sound art all work in conjunction to create a harmonious sonic environment where light and darkness ebb and flow throughout one another, finding a highly personal voice among the diverse lineage of ambient music. Through her use of the synthesizer, Decker investigates the way the evocative qualities of electronic music can elicit emotional responses from the listener, constructing understated melodic phrases that are ripe with warmth and nostalgia, like looking at a faded family photograph. These lines of varying texture and tone shift fluidly across each other, coming in and out of focus in layers in a manner similar to that of visual art or cinema. Multa Nox works with a refreshing purity where all elements mesh into a singular whole, rather than focusing on separate components of technology to convey ideas. The resulting melodies are like clusters of beautiful simplicity that float throughout a colorful landscape, like cells that make up a larger musical organism. Rhythmic devices are introduced subtly, creating a propulsion and momentum that carries the composition forward, never erupting into the driving force of a proper beat, but rather acting as a biological pulse that gives life to the music. Decker injects further humanity into her compositions by utilizing acoustic elements as well, such as human speech and field recordings. By obscuring and abstracting her own voice through techniques such as whispers and cut-up dissections, Decker produces fragments of enunciation that function as textural rather than narrative elements. On tracks like "A Body Holds Still," the gritty sounds of traffic and noise in an urban environment are introduced, reminding the listener of the sharp edge of reality. By combining these field recordings with her manipulated vocal samples, a soft, delicate layer is injected into an increasingly menacing sound world, conveying a stark juxtaposition and vulnerability that can be reflective of our methods of reconciling our innermost conflicts. Over his career he has placed focus on the relationship between body, medium, and sound, creating a field of work that defies easy definition. An architect of foundsoundscapes. He creates music that exposes the marks and memories of a variety of media, as presented in the 26 tracks on 'Glitter in my tears', an eclectic album that celebrates the sense of overwhelming desolation held in the music. A subdued cathartic opus. Each piece is a microcosm of haunted memory, that unites to create a record of melancholic vignettes, and is easily his most critical recorded work to date.
