  1. Free Download Why Cities Lose: The Deep Roots of the Urban-Rural Political Divide by Jonathan A. Rodden, Mike Lenz, Tantor Audio English | July 07, 2020 | ISBN: B08BW2MHS5 | 10 hours and 13 minutes | MP3 64 kbps | 281 Mb A prizewinning political scientist traces the origins of urban-rural political conflict and shows how geography shapes elections in America and beyond. Why is it so much easier for the Democratic Party to win the national popular vote than to build and maintain a majority in Congress? Why can Democrats sweep statewide offices in places like Pennsylvania and Michigan yet fail to take control of the same states' legislatures? Many place exclusive blame on partisan gerrymandering and voter suppression. But as political scientist Jonathan A. Rodden demonstrates in Why Cities Lose, the left's electoral challenges have deeper roots in economic and political geography. In the late 19th century, support for the left began to cluster in cities among the industrial working class. Today, left-wing parties have become coalitions of diverse urban interest groups, from racial minorities to the creative class. These parties win big in urban districts but struggle to capture the suburban and rural seats necessary for legislative majorities. A bold new interpretation of today's urban-rural political conflict, Why Cities Lose also points to electoral reforms that could address the left's under-representation while reducing urban-rural polarization. 2. Free Download The Nature of Our Cities: Harnessing the Power of the Natural World to Survive a Changing Planet (Audiobook) English | ASIN: B0CJKVXH7N | 2024 | 9 hours and 35 minutes | M4B@64 kbps | 276 MB Author: Nadina Galle Narrator: Eileen Stevens The Nature of Our Cities is a stirring exploration of how innovators from around the world are combining urban nature with emerging technologies, protecting the planet's cities from the effects of climate change and safeguarding the health of their inhabitants. We live in an age when humanity spends 90% of its time indoors, yet the nature around us-especially in America's cities-has never been more vital. This distancing from nature has sparked crises in mental health, longevity, and hope for the next generation, while also heightening the risks we face from historic floods, heatwaves, and wildfires. Indeed, embracing nature holds untapped potential to strengthen and fortify our cities, suburbs, and towns, providing solutions spanning flood preparation, wildfire management, and promoting longevity. As ecological engineer Dr. Nadina Galle shows in The Nature of Our Cities nature is our most critical infrastructure for tackling the climate crisis. It just needs a little help. A fellow at MIT's Senseable City Lab and selected for Forbes' 30 under 30 list, Galle is at the forefront of the growing movement to fuse nature and technology for urban resilience. In THE NATURE OF OUR CITIES, she embarks on a journey as fascinating as it is pressing, showing how scientists and citizens from around the world are harnessing emerging technologies to unlock the power of the natural world to save their cities, a phenomenon she calls the "Internet of Nature." Traveling the globe, Galle examines how urban nature, long an afterthought for many, actually points the way toward a more sustainable future. 3. Free Download Dream Cities: Seven Urban Ideas That Shape the World (Audiobook) English | ASIN: B0CQZ2TQ81 | 2024 | 9 hours and 52 minutes | M4B@64 kbps | 286 MB Author: Wade Graham Narrator: Paul Bellantoni Landscape designer and historian Wade Graham follows the acclaimed American Eden with a lively, accessible cultural history of modern cities-from suburbs, downtown districts, and exurban sprawl, to shopping malls and "sustainable" developments-seen through the lens of planning, design, and the architects and movements behind them. Dream Cities explores our cities in a new way-as expressions of ideas, often conflicting, about how we should live, work, play, make, buy, and believe. It tells the stories of the real architects and thinkers whose imagined cities became the blueprints for the world we live in. From the nineteenth century to today, what began as visionary concepts-sometimes utopian, sometimes outlandish, always controversial-were gradually adopted and constructed on a massive scale in cities around the world, from Dubai to Ulan Bator to London to Los Angeles. Wade Graham uses the lives of the pivotal dreamers behind these concepts, as well as their acolytes and antagonists, to deconstruct our urban landscapes-the houses, towers, civic centers, condominiums, shopping malls, boulevards, highways, and spaces in between-exposing the ideals and ideas embodied in each. From the baroque fantasy villages of Bertram Goodhue to the superblocks of Le Corbusier's Radiant City to the pseudo-agrarian dispersal of Frank Lloyd Wright's Broadacre City, our upscale leafy suburbs, downtown skyscraper districts, infotainment-driven shopping malls, and "sustainable" eco-developments are seen as never before. In this book, Graham uncovers the original plans of brilliant, obsessed, and sometimes megalomaniacal designers, revealing the foundations of today's varied muni[beeep]lities. Dream Cities is nothing less than a field guide to our modern urban world. (8:02) 6 C75 M68 Y67 K90 (11:03) 7 Strange Expression (5:33) 8 XII (6:58) Given his impressive track record, much is expected from NGLY's debut album, Cities of Illusion. Happily, the L.I.E.S regular has delivered something rather special. After beginning with the macabre, early morning ambient of "Ideal Place" - think warped vocal samples, dirt-encrusted textures and Cabaret Voltaire influences - the Argentine romps through a dark, atmospheric, on-point blend of rubbery EBM rhythms, metallic electronics, industrial textures, electro beats and mind-altering techno workouts. Given the vintage, left-of-centre nature of his influences, it's perhaps unsurprising that the set feels like a long lost relic of the '80s industrial scene, with just enough modern influences to keep it feeling fresh throughout. http://rapidgator.net/file/97e1e38a18890c15646806c3275ac35c/NGLY_-_Cities_of_Illusion.zip.html ssssssssssssssssssssssssssssss http://ssh.tf/ydcixSFjp/NGLY_-_Cities_of_Illusion.zip ssssssssssssssssssssssssssssss http://uploaded.net/file/3y0wk2pq/NGLY_-_Cities_of_Illusion.zip

  9. Daniel Brook - A History Of Future Cities Unabridged AudioBook | 2013 | Genre: History | English | ASIN: B00D39GZ2W | MP3 64Kb | Length: 13 hrs and 00 mins | 358.24 MB Every month, five million people move from the past to the future. Pouring into developing-world "instant cities" like Dubai and Shenzhen, these urban newcomers confront a modern world cobbled together from fragments of a West they have never seen. Do these fantastical boomtowns, where blueprints spring to life overnight on virgin land, represent the dawning of a brave new world? Or is their vaunted newness a mirage? In a captivating blend of history and reportage, Daniel Brook travels to a series of major metropolitan hubs that were once themselves instant cities-- St. Petersburg, Shanghai, and Mumbai--to watch their "dress rehearsals for the twenty-first century." Understanding today's emerging global order, he argues, requires comprehending the West's profound and conflicted influence on developing-world cities over the centuries. In 1703, Tsar Peter the Great personally oversaw the construction of a new Russian capital, a "window on the West" carefully modeled on Amsterdam, that he believed would wrench Russia into the modern world. In the nineteenth century, Shanghai became the fastest-growing city on earth as it mushroomed into an English-speaking, Western-looking metropolis that just happened to be in the Far East. Meanwhile, Bombay, the cosmopolitan hub of the British Raj, morphed into a tropical London at the hands of its pith-helmeted imperialists. Juxtaposing the stories of the architects and authoritarians, the artists and revolutionaries who seized the reins to transform each of these precociously modern places into avatars of the global future, Brook demonstrates that the drive for modernization was initially conflated with wholesale Westernization. He shows, too, the ambiguous legacy of that emulation--the birth (and rebirth) of Chinese capitalism in Shanghai, the origins of Bollywood in Bombay's American-style movie palaces, the combustible mix of revolutionary culture and politics that rocked the Russian capital--and how it may be transcended today. A fascinating, vivid look from the past out toward the horizon, A History of Future Cities is both a crucial reminder of globalization's long march and an inspiring look into the possibilities of our Asian Century. 10. Charles Dickens - A Tale of Two Cities Unabridged AudioBook | 2010 | Genre: Fiction | English | ASIN: B004EHZXVQ | MP3 128Kb | 425.5 MB Novel by Charles Dickens, published both serially and in book form in 1859. The story is set in the late 18th century against the background of the French Revolution. Although Dickens borrowed from Thomas Carlyle's history, The French Revolution, for his sprawling tale of London and revolutionary Paris, the novel offers more drama than accuracy. The scenes of large-scale mob violence are especially vivid, if superficial in historical understanding. The complex plot involves Sydney Carton's sacrifice of his own life on behalf of his friends Charles Darnay and Lucie Manette. While political events drive the story, Dickens takes a decidedly antipolitical tone, lambasting both aristocratic tyranny and revolutionary excess--the latter memorably caricatured in Madame Defarge, who knits beside the guillotine. The book is perhaps best known for its opening lines, "It was the best of times, it was the worst of times," and for Carton's last speech, in which he says of his replacing Darnay in a prison cell, "It is a far, far better thing that I do, than I have ever done; it is a far, far better rest that I go to, than I have ever known." -- The Merriam-Webster Encyclopedia of Literature..
