"Camel Walk" (Jazzland, 2008) is pianist Maria Kannegaard's third album, recorded as a trio together with Ole Morten V??gan on contra bass, and Thomas Str??nen on drums. After her initial releases of 2000's "Breaking the Surface" (Act), and her second studio album of 2005, "Quiet Joy" (Jazzland), we are again warmly welcomed into Kannegaard's exquisite style. Consisting of ten songs composed by Kannegaard, we are taken on something of a musical journey. "Drifting Down the Nile" opens the album, followed by the irking "Haunted". You may notice that this time, Kannegaard's usually developed soloing is on this album is placed within the context of a collective sound. We pause briefly to reflect over "A Cup of Coffee and Some Danish Pastries" before we embark on the title track, "Camel Walk". You may also notice the cross-cultural pollination of jazz, singer/songwriter style, avant garde and indie rock flavorings. Further on, we are introduced to Kannegaard's impeccable technique and expressiveness, as well as through "Sliding Doors", "Traveling Pass" and finally, "We Interrupt for a Short Commercial". It is the welcoming tone of the album overall which places it firmly in one of the most intriguing chamber jazz recordings of the year. We can hear touches of Kannegaard's influences, such as the music of Keith Jarret and Bill Evans in her improvisational skills, and in the disjointed melodic structures of Geri Allen and Herbie Nichols, two composers and performers very near to her heart. However, it is her own style that breaks through, and fused with Thomas Str??nen's always perceptive percussion and Ole Morten V??gan's artfully syncopated bass, it all comes together as an organic whole, a true hallmark of Norwegian jazz. The piano trio never sounded so modern, yet respectfully pays tribute to the traditions of the past, however enveloping them in Kannegaard's forward-looking style. The alternate version on Sun Set included the complete contributions of the London Symphony Orchestra, which had largely been removed from the version released in 1977. The alternate version also includes a short unreleased track, "Epilogue," which had originally been intended to be placed between "So Said the Lighthouse Keeper" and "Hope." Bio: In August of 1976, the self-titled debut album by an unknown group called Klaatu was released on Capitol Records to little notice. The following February Steve Smith, a writer for the Providence Journal in Rhode Island, wrote an article titled "Could Klaatu Be the Beatles? Mystery Is a Magical Mystery Tour." The article began the rumor that Klaatu was "more than likely either in part or in whole the Beatles." These conjectures, fueled by a series of articles in trade magazines like Billboard created a huge amount of hype and Capitol did nothing to deny or confirm the rumors. Throughout 1977, record sales soared and radio stations ran "Is Klaatu the Beatles?" promotions. Reportedly, some of the "clues" as to whether or not Klaatu were the Beatles included backward messages, Morse code, references to the group's identities in the song lyrics, and the word "Beatles" hidden in various places on the record jacket. After several months of conjecture, the group's identity was revealed at the end of year -- it wasn't the Beatles after all, it was Terry Draper (songwriter, vocalist, drummer), John Woloschuck, and Dee Long. Immediately, their record sales declined, and due to a backlash generated by the Beatles hoax their four subsequent albums failed to sell. Crossroads Fire Red Moon is neither the arena rock of Craig Chaquico's days with Jefferson Starship, nor the chart-topping smooth jazz that he initially turned to as a solo artist. It's something grittier, more primordial - and utterly surprising. Yet, there he is, chugging and juking with vocalist Noah Hunt (Kenny Wayne Shepherd Band) through "Lie to Me," the first of seven originals on Fire Red Moon, due on October 16, 2012, from Blind Pig Records. Chaquico also tears into tracks from the likes of Muddy Waters and Robert Johnson, and brilliantly reworks the Albert King classic "Born Under a Bad Sign" as a scalding instrumental. There's none of the brawny crunch associated with his mainstream Starship hits, and none of the satiny ruminations of Acoustic Planet - nominated for a new age Grammy in 1995. Chaquico, often alongside touring vocalist Rolf Hartley, instead settles into a dusty-booted groove on "Devil's Daughter," then goes to the bottom of a brown bottle with singer Eric E. Golbach on "Bad Woman." "Little Red Shoes," as with "Devil's Daughter," occasionally betrays just a hint of his pop-chart-topping penchant for a hook, while "Blue on Blue" almost gets quiet enough to recall his more recent smooth jazz past, but Fire Red Moon never strays too far from its central roots-rocking, occasionally Santana-esque theme.
