But this didn't prevent some groups from offering up an alternative. Buffalo Springfield is one of those groups, led by Stephen Stills, Neil Young and Richie Furay and completed by bassist Bruce Palmer and drummer Dewey Martin. From their eponymous first album, Buffalo Springfield, which appeared at the end of 1966, their attention was turned towards folk-rock, psychedelic, country (like with Go And Say Goodbye) and even pop (with Sit Down I Think I Love You). It's a cocktail that often touches the sublime (like the protest hit song For What It's Worth by Stills) and remains the cornerstone of 60's folk rock, just like the ballad Nowadays Clancy Can't Even Sing by Neil Young. This atypical group remains especially fascinating for the assortment of its strong personalities. Though it was exactly for that reason that the group came to an end. As early as their second album release in November 1967 (Buffalo Springfield Again) the cracks began to show - notably between Stills and Young who were fighting over artistic direction. Each leader signed his own themes, like Broken Arrow, Mr Soul and Expecting To Fly for the Canadian and Bluebird for the American... With the aptly named Last Time Around, Buffalo Springfield took its final bow, with Neil Young even jumping ship before the end of the recording of this third opus that was released during the summer of 1968. Even the album cover is in fact a montage simulating a group shot... From there after, the various members found further success independently: Neil Young took off solo, Richie Furay went on to form the band Poco and Stills joined David Crosby and Graham Nash for the trio Crosby, Stills & Nash... This 5CD box set brings together the stereo mixes of the three albums and the mono mixes of Buffalo Springfield and Buffalo Springfield Again, all remastered from the original analogue tapes under the direction of Neil Young. Fans of that album will find much to love on this release, too. Indeed, Ted continues to be the star of the show, which is quite a feat given his predecessors and the stellar musicianship provided by this seasoned band. However, the personnel features one prominent shift from the two previous albums: drummer and backing vocalist Jimmy Keegan is absent. While it draws upon material featured on the live Level Five (2001) and studio Happy with What You Have to Be Happy With (2002) extended-play discs, there are also several new sonic sculptures included. Among them is the title track, which is divided into a series of central thematic motifs much in the same manner as the "Larks' Tongues in Aspic" movements had done in the past. This 21st century schizoid band ably bears the torch of its predecessors with the same ballsy aggression that has informed other seminal King Crimson works -- such as In the Court of the Crimson King (1969), Red (1974), and more recently THRAK (1995). This incarnation of the Mighty Krim includes the excessively talented quartet of Adrian Belew (guitar/vocals), Robert Fripp (guitar), Trey Gunn (Warr guitar/Warr fretless guitar), and Pat Mastelotto (percussion). Under the auspices of Machine -- whose notable productions include post-grunge and industrial medalists Pitchshifter and White Zombie -- the combo unleashes a torrent of alternating sonic belligerence ("Level Five") and inescapable beauty ("Eyes Wide Open"). These extremes are linked as well as juxtaposed by equally challenging soundscapes from Fripp on "The Facts of Life: Intro" as well as Belew's series of "The Power to Believe" haikus. The disc is fleshed out with some choice extended instrumentals such as "Elektrik" and "Dangerous Curves," boasting tricky time signatures that are indelibly linked to equally engaging melodies. Both "Happy With What You Have to Be Happy With" and "Facts of Life" stand out as the (dare say) perfect coalescence of Belew's uncanny Beatlesque lyrical sense with the sort of bare-knuckled, in your face aural attack that has defined King Crimson for over three decades.
