Matt Ellis' new, fifth album, recorded and mixed at Wavelab in Tucson, AZ, has a new, tougher sound that recalls the Australian Singer/Songwriters early rock roots. Based in California since 2005, Ellis' sound has evolved effortlessly over the past decade blending Country, Rock and Folk in the tradition of Tom Petty, Neil Young and Ryan Adams. Last December, Ellis and his band headed to Tucson, AZ and recorded 13 tracks over 4 days. Produced by Matt, the live tracks were engineered by Chris Schultz and Craig Schumacher (Neko Case, Calexico, The Jayhawks). Ellis returned home to Los Angeles, CA to complete recording, teaming up with Nick Luca (Calexico, Iron & Wine). The pair spent the following months, setting up in multiple home studios adding Vocals, Fender Rhodes, Piano and additional Guitars, before Matt returned to Tucson to mix the album with Schumacher, the celebrated engineer behind his last two releases. The result is a loose classic rock feel, steeped in Americana and Folk. Ellis' trademark voice is in fine form and the songs have an extra level of detail, but the long list of guest musicians is gone. The band Matt put together to promote his last full length, "Births, Deaths & Marriages" (2010), is still with him, and he was inspired to build this album around them. Throughout 2013, Matt was presenting unfinished songs to Josh Norton (Guitar), Fern Sanchez (Drums), Grant Fitzpatrick (Bass), Tim Walker (Pedal Steel) and his wife Vavine (Vocals). The group would jam on songs over multiple sessions, letting arrangements and feel develop naturally, the same approach the band took to the recording sessions. A double A-Side single, "On The Horizon/Thank You Los Angeles" was released in late August. Since the release, the band has been promoting the new songs with a launch at The Del Monte speakeasy, a slot on the Abbot Kinney Fest and The Desert Stars Festival at Pappy & Harriets. Matt Ellis is launching the new album on Wednesday October 22nd at Harvard & Stone, in Los Angeles California. Sippin' Cider [8:43] Saxophonist John Ellis recorded his latest CD in New Orleans, and three of its tunes are exactly the sort of greasy jazz-funk tunes you'd expect from a recording named One Foot in the Swamp. Two songs feature guest guitarist John Scofield in the sort of lazy-hazy funk settings he can sleep through, but, man, they really do sound good-especially the opening track "Happy," which is the hands-down best thing on the disc. While his New Orleans foot is obvious, Ellis is less forthcoming about the other, which-if you'll pardon the strained metaphor-he apparently keeps in the '70s. The rest of the CD features the sort of hard bop-to-jazz fusion that Miles Davis used to kick off that decade. Ellis also unearths some cheesy period-synth effects that should have probably stayed buried. With Aaron Goldberg on keys, Gregoire Maret on harmonica and guest trumpeter Nicholas Payton, Ellis works up some nice ensemble passages, but the band loses significant energy on the fusiony pieces. Burnt By The Flame Of Love The debut album by Alabama-born soul singer Ellis Hooks is a breath of fresh air on the blues and R&B scenes. For starters, Hooks' songs and sound are entirely unaffected by modern notions of sterility and restraint, or even worse, revivalism. These 13 songs burn with the same fire that the great Southern soul and R&B tracks did from the days of yore -- without sounding like them. With producer Jon Tiven -- who, along with wife Sally, also co-writes with Hooks -- the singer has crafted an entirely upstart outing, one that touches upon Wilson Pickett, Sam Cooke, and Otis Redding, but feels like one of the gritty New York streets Hooks has busked upon. The brokenness and hope that lie in the rough grain of Hooks' voice in "Everything's Falling Around Me" feel as much like a prayer as a wish for transcendence, supported by the biting chunkiness of Sally Tiven's popping bass strut and Jon Tiven's knotty six-string fills. Hooks goes into the groove and lets it cover him; he's singing to the heavens, but also to anyone else who is in earshot and can provide help. At the heart of the shimmering sweet soul in "Blaze Up the Town" is a tale of acceptance and reportorial regret. With a small chorus of backing vocals and wah-wah guitars trussing up the center of the mix, Hooks is free to indulge his confusion and frustration -- he seeks freedom, but doesn't want to hurt anyone in the process. In his voice is the sound of the truth as it falls subjectively out of the heart of the singer. But one also has to wonder if there has ever been a more searing, honest love song than "Your Love Is Too Strong." Here is a testament to the Beloved that Doc Pomus wishes from beyond that he had written. The instrumental arrangements here just bubble under the raw power in Hooks' singing. Tiven is a fine guitarist but, more than this, as a producer he understands that immediacy is the only way to provide the proper intimacy for a vocalist of Hooks' commitment and magnitude. There is some fine bluesy material here as well, in cuts such as the title cut, "I Been There," "Your Last Chance," and the closing "Burnt By the Flame of Love," which comes out of the rambling, shambling Elmore James tradition. All it proves is that Hooks can do it all, and that this is a first volley in a career that, if developed properly, will not only affect the music that is soul and R&B, but may also just remind listeners why it meant so much in the first place.
