Cymone wrote and produced four songs that appeared on Evelyn "Champagne" King's Face to Face, including "Teenager," a Top 30 Billboard Black Singles hit. For his second solo album, Cymone put aside his one-man band approach and utilized his touring group. Guitarist Bobby Dean (three songs) and drummer John "Bam Bam" Morgan (two songs), along with keyboardists Craig Thomas, Andr?? Cumne, and Linda Rennae (Cymone's sister), all contributed, though electronic gear is so dominant that the material actually sounds more like the work of one or two individuals with occasional background vocals. Even with the assistance from Cymone's stage mates, the album is in line with the mid-'80s trend of producer-oriented synth pop and electronic R&B. Compared to Livin' in the New Wave, the sound of Survivin' in the '80s is rigid and distant, and it doesn't have the same amount of charm. "Make Me Wanna Dance," a decent midtempo number that's not particularly memorable, was Cymone's highest charting single to that point; it scraped the inside of Billboard's Black Singles Top 40. The other single, "Survivin' in the '80s," all choppy synthetic funk, features topical rhymes with references to baggy pants. It failed to chart. Nothing here mixes R&B and rock with as much skill as Cameo's late-1982 "Alligator Woman" or Shalamar's "Dead Giveaway," but there are solid album cuts in the form of "M.O.T.F.," a slinking, mostly instrumental track, and "Stay," a seductive yet aggressive slow jam. Another song features background vocals from Germain Brooks, member of the Girls - a female trio guided and produced by Cymone that would release an album for Columbia in 1984. The band were an R&B trio of sisters from Detroit, Michigan. They first recorded for GM Records before moving to Philadelphia International Records with Gamble & Huff. The Jones Girls consisted of sisters Brenda, Valorie and Shirley Jones. They served as backup singers for Lou Rawls, Teddy Pendergrass, Aretha Franklin, and Le Pamplemousse. They also worked with Diana Ross and were the backup singers on Linda Clifford's album If My Friends Could See Me Now and on Tower of Power's album Back On The Streets. On Target is a stylistic departure from The Jones Girls' Philadelphia International output, and instead of sounding like a combination of the Three Degrees and the Emotions, The Jones Girls end up sounding like a combination of the Emotions, Chic, and Change. This release was a solid outing nonetheless, and Wright and Thornton do right by The Jones Girls on infectious grooves such as "2 Win U Back," "Curious," "I Can Make a Difference," and the title song. Van McCoy's "Baby, I'm Yours," which was a major hit for Barbara Lewis, saw The Jones Girls successfully add a touch of funk to the tune, while staying true to its sentimental nature. Bobbi Humphrey's major-label swan song eradicates the final traces of jazz remaining in her music's elemental makeup. Produced by Ralph MacDonald and William Eaton, The Good Life is a 1979 straight-up R&B record. Humphrey always embraced commercial sounds and sensibilities regardless of jazz conventions, but this music is simply too slick for comfort. Her skills as a flutist remain exceptional, which gives The Good Life the funky grooves and gossamer textures that buoyed her classic Blue Note sides. The Good Life is quite an unashamedly commercial album for Bobbi Humphrey as she has drops the high class approach of her earlier albums and opted for making a full-on in-your-face disco album.
