Hopeless is blues that allows the vocals once again to soar and work with the searing guitar riffs as the girl from Huddersfield shows a rawness as the lyrics pierce and the soul of the music is ripped bare. Better Man is gritty blues and the harmonica playing is the perfect foil for the depth and range of her vocals, this is a down to earth track that grounds the album at the half-way point. The last four tracks of the album continue with the same mix of vocals and instrumentation, at times I would have liked to have heard the instruments pick up the blues story to give different shapes and tempo to the album. This is partly achieved on Ice Cold Tears a slower number with some lovely guitar licks giving the track some ice cold shivers and I would have liked to have seen the voice take a breather and the guitar pick up the icy mood and then her voice would have had more dramatic impact that it definitely has the power to achieve. Moved by intuition, she instinctively connects emotionally to the lyrics, making the listener contemplate each word, seeing songs like Irving Berlin's "Cheek to Cheek" and Bob Dylan's "Like a Rolling Stone" in a new light, a way that makes the songs seem even more brilliant than their original version. Her treatment of the tracks gives them a mesmerizing glint that revitalizes the songs. John Lennon and Paul McCartney's rarely covered track "Blackbird" is laden with Lewis' authentic imprint as the smooth texture and shimmery resonance of her vocals cradle the words, giving them a bluesy luster composed of her own blend. Accompanied by pianist Mitchel Forman, Lewis' vocals soar above the keys while draped in the folksy accents of Andrew Synowiec's lap steel. So much about Lewis' delivery is rooted in her own making, showing little influence of other artists in her mindset, which is a rare find. Sunshine Ben is a singer, songwriter, and guitarist hailing from Natchez, MS, a town rich in culture and history in a state rooted in the blues. With musicians on both sides of the family, he was exposed to a wide variety of music at a very early age. At age 10 he began playing trumpet, but found his true passion at age 12 when he was given his first hand-me-down guitar by his aunt. At age 17, Ben found himself playing Bass in the local bars and house parties with a group of friends who called themselves Double Shot. When he turned 18 in 2000, Ben joined the Marine Corps and spent the next 4 years serving at different duty stations across the country as well as one tour in Iraq. His last duty station landed him in eastern North Carolina where he helped form a hard rock band called Absynth. After an honorable discharge, he stayed on the Carolina coast playing at local bars and festivals for several years following. In the late summer of 2006, Ben moved back to Natchez, MS and reunited with former members of Double Shot, Jon Borum and Bob Buseck along with long time friend and drummer, Aaron O'Brien to form In Red Letters. IRL quickly gained popularity in the local bar scene with the release of their first and only album Beautiful World. In 2008, IRL played their biggest show at the Great Mississippi River Balloon Festival for the Friday night balloon glow. In Red Letters disbanded shortly after and Ben began his solo acoustic career in a familiar Natchez music venue the Under the Hill Saloon. It was here that Ben met many travelling musicians and went on the share the stage and studio with artists like Walker Lukens, the Battlefield Band, Grand Child, and the Kodiak Farm Boys, and has played venues in Austin, TX, Nashville, TN, Little Rock, AR, Baton Rouge, LA, and Birmingham, AL. In 2010, Ben recorded a short EP entitled "Friends" at a local studio in Natchez, MS. This EP featured guest appearances by many local musicians and friends he had made in his years playing in the area. He continued to tour the local area until 2014 when he moved to Little Rock, AR. Gambling Machine won this the 'Best Jazz/Blues Recording' category at the 2012 Scottish New Music Awards, while I Got To Know from the album won a preliminary nomination in the British Blues Awards song writing category. Candlelight & Sympathy from Empty Roads will feature on the soundtrack of a new feature film 'Scar Tissue'. Lewis has found himself sitting at or near the top of the UK ReverbNation blues charts for months now, and his name spreading fast around the UK music scene with features in Blues Matters and other music magazines. The band have been booked for over 300 shows from Farnham to Orkney and appeared at some of the UK's biggest blues festivals, including Hebden, Maryport and Shetland. Lewis has also appeared on stage with many top musicians including Henrik Freischlader, Ryan McGarvey and Alan Nimmo. As a guitarist he pays tribute to some of the greatest musicians of the 20th century, taking influence from people like Stevie Ray Vaughan, Jimi Hendrix and Rory Gallagher. He also incorporates playing styles from more modern blues-rock musicians such as, Joe Bonamassa, Derek Trucks and Matt Scofield. As a vocalist he has developed his own unique and powerful style of singing, while taking influence from the likes of Sting, Joe Cocker and Dave Mathews.
