For her third CD, the talented alto again utilizes the talents of keyboardist/arranger Geoff Keezer with guitarist Peter Sprague, bassist Hamilton Price, and drummer Jon Wikan rounding out the rhythm section, with a few guests on some tracks. She expands her musical horizon a bit more on this release, though there are still plenty of standards. Donatelli swings hard with her rousing interpretation of "It's You or No One." She shimmers in her romantic duet with Keezer on "Why Did I Choose You?". Ron Blake is added on tenor sax for the vocalist's enchanting rendition of Benny Carter's timeless "When Lights Are Low." She's equally comfortable with Cedar Walton's demanding "Enchantment (Firm Roots)." Donatelli ventures into Brazilian music, including a touching, lush rendition of an Ivan Lins/Vitor Martins bossa nova (with English lyrics by Alan & Marilyn Bergman), backed by strings and with superb solos by soprano saxophonist Ron Blake and Keezer. She also offers a playful, breezy take of "The Telephone Song" with Sprague (on acoustic guitar) and Wikan (on pandeito) as her sole accompanists. There are a few twists. Donatelli performs Sting's "Big Lie, Small World" as an infectious bossa nova with a bit of Afro-Cuban seasoning thrown in by Keezer, the backing vocals of the husband-and-wife team of Kerry Marsh and Julia Dollison, plus bass clarinet and cello. The backing is similar for her warm interpretation of the obscure pop ballad "The Bed I Made." Denise Donatelli continues to make impressive strides after her delayed entrance into jazz. When All Is Through is another chillout gem for friends of Fridrik Karlson's guitar music. An artist, who absolutely needs to be discovered by the huge US music market. To Do Or Not To Do, a modification of Shakespeare's "to be or to be" adds a funky attitude to the album. Sigurdur Flosason and David Thor Jonsson brilliant on alto sax respectively solo synth. Shake It Of shows Johann's plugged bass mastership. By the way Johann plays Neuser basses, but also loves the Sadowsky and the JA-Special. This time we can listen to Oskar Gudjonsson on tenor sax, a worthy addition as guest musician. Pleasure Point is a slowtempo tune with an old-fashion beat. May be a little recuperation after so many uptempo pieces. Was This A Dream is a slow tempo tune with a more dark atmosphere. Outstanding Eythor Gunnarsson 's synth solo and Johann's deep fretless bass solo. Chunk Stump is a short slap bass interplay. Some Latin flavor with Portugal Samba are magicing Gunnlaugur Briem (Drums/Percussion) and Eythor Gunnarsson (Congas), but the ulrtimative master-wizzard is undoubtly Johann with his slap and fretless bass. David Thor Jonsson adds some nice salsa runnings at piano. After a samba a waltz? Why not: Serenity Waltz. A slowtempo melancholic tune perfectly set in scene by Eythor Gunnarsson on acoustic piano. His sensible piano touches are followed by Joel Palsson 's smooth tenor sax. Phat final with Johann's slap bass. Halldor Gunnlaugur Hauksson plays the drums in Jinda's jinglebell style. Oh, how I'd love to use this disc as part of a blindfold test for those who roll their eyes or otherwise show their disdain when the discussion turns to women in Jazz who do anything other than sing or play the piano. I can almost picture the looks of shock and disbelief as I disclose that this baritone saxophonist's name is Claire Daly and that she is the leader on this exemplary quartet/quintet date. What is the Jazz world coming to, the nay-sayers may wonder, when a woman not only chooses to play an instrument as large and unwieldy as the baritone but does so as well as any of her male counterparts. After two decades of gigging around New York and going on the road with various groups including the marvelous all-woman big band, DIVA, this is Daly's first recording under her own name, and it's a debut that is long overdue. To put it as concisely as possible, she's something else. On the breezy opener, "I've Got the World on a String," Daly's unruffled approach and burnished tone remind one of the fabled Bostonian, Serge Chaloff. Elsewhere, as on "For All We Know" or "You Make Me Feel So Young," she stirs memories of one of the greatest (and most sadly neglected) baritone masters of them all, Sweden's Lars Gullin. But while the influence exerted by those giants (as well as by Cecil Payne, Pepper Adams and such recent poll-winners as Nick Brignola and Ronnie Cuber) is inescapable, Daly's no robotic clone. She has found her own voice, and it's as bold and persuasive as anyone else's - male or female. She's as comfortable with burners as she is with ballads, never overlooks a melodic phrase, has a gorgeous sound and always swings - low or high. Daly also has a keen sense of humor, as she shows on Rahsaan Roland Kirk's playful "Lady's Blues," on which she uses some squeals, honks and even a Kirk-style whistle to make her point. Daly invited Boston-area tenor George Garzone to sit in on three tracks, and he's a standout on Lerner and Loewe's "I've Grown Accustomed to Her Face," his own composition "The Chooch," and the ironically chosen finale, Hoagy Carmichael's "Little Old Lady" - which Daly is anything but. We haven't mentioned the rhythm section, but should, as Yamin, Hofstra and Grant are impeccable in support and deliver consistently impressive solos whenever their turn comes around. Apart from its 49:57 playing time, the session as a whole is near-perfect. I do wish that Daly had been able to include at least one more highly appropriate standard, "Close Your Eyes," because if you can do that, while opening your ears, you'll hear an awesome baritone saxophonist who's as dynamic and resourceful as any you can name. If you like the baritone, you're gonna love Claire Daly.
