Readjust (3:58) 09. One Plus One (4:29) 10. Even Up The Score (3:12) I just received the newest release, Mustang Blues, from John Earl Walker and it digs in deep. Opening with Hey Baby, a cool 12 bar jam with a Allstars flare. John Earl Walker has been playing his guitar for some time and he lays on it early showing he knows his way around. Joined by Peter Harris on bass, Frank Diorio on drums and Gene Cordew on keys, this track is a great opener! Solid down, The Devil Follows Me, sounds like it's straight from Chicago and Walker slings his guitar with comfort. His riffs roll off of his fingertips like water pushed along nicely by Cordew on piano. Title track, Mustang Blues, has a funky R&B feel along the lines of Mustang Sally or Poke Salad Annie. This is a cool track with Steve Ress adding some real nice slide guitar work on the mix. Funkify is a guitar led instrumental with a funky beat and extended guitar soloing. I'm Already Gone is a modern blues style take on a soul feel. It has the blues basis with strong bass by Harris and keys by Cordew with Savoy Brown like guitar and vocals giving it a very cool bluesy sound. One of my favorite track on the release. My Mama Told Me is a nicely paced shuffle track with stinging guitar riffs. Slower drag blues, Superstorm Sandy Blues plays into any blues guitar's hand with a great tempo and plenty of space to improvise. Walker really breaks loose on this track with some great trem bends. Excellent! Readjust falls more into a rock feel with R&B anchor. Tandem guitar leads and one flat out solo near the end of the track cap it off. Another nice shuffle track, One Plus One, finds Walker using some real nice double stop techniques on his solos giving them a grittier feel and George Thorogood like vocals makes this another top track. Wrapping the release is Even Up The Score, a driving shuffle backed track with Walker on vocal and lead guitar. In an increasingly crowded pool of female jazz singers it's important to stand out from the norm: two things about Life Is Sweet ensure that Walker can do that. Firstly, there is Walker's song selection a tasteful and unusual mix of standards and more left-field but high quality tunes. Secondly, there's her voice a subtle but unmistakable hint of country music gives it a distinctive and emotive quality. At times, its fragility suggests a slight lack of confidence a pity, because Walker has much to feel confident about. Walker's band helps things along, too. The core quartet is consistently good, while the guest musicians, especially cellist Philip Worman, add just the right touches with their performances. Any singer who records standards from the Great American Songbook needs to bring something new to their interpretations, and the album's opening tune, Johnny Mercer and Victor Schertzinger's "I Remember You," shows that Walker can do just that. The arrangement, by pianist John R Burr, features a delicate trumpet part from Steven Bernstein and propulsive but light drums from Scott Amendola. Walker's vocal hangs back a little, resisting Amendola's invitation to hurry along and, instead, creating a relaxed, almost laidback approach to the melody. Elsewhere, a distinct country feel pervades many of the tunes, to great effect. When singing about love lost or found, the country music aesthetic of "three chords and the truth" is often ideal, and Walker and her band apply it with great skill. Burr's piano on "How Deep is the Ocean" is a direct descendant of Floyd Cramer, for example, while on Irving Berlin's "What'll I Do?," voice and cello combine in a delightful country waltz. Walker's left-field choices also include Randy Newman's "Let Me Go" and Ray Davies' (The Kinks) "Celluloid Heroes." In "Days" and "Waterloo Sunset," Davies wrote two of the finest of all pop songs; unfortunately, "Celluloid Heroes" pales in comparison, and the clarity of Walker's vocal only serves to highlight its unconvincing lyrics. Harry Nilsson's "The Moonbeam Song" and Nick Drake's "Saturday Sun" are another story. Walker gets to the heart of both songs, delivering the album's most affecting performances. "The Moonbeam Song" features Jon Evans' lap steel guitar, while "Saturday Sun" sees the quartet joined by saxophonist Dave Ellis and Hammond organist Julie Wolf. Neither song is particularly well-known, but both are inspired choices; the arrangements ensuring that the poignancy of the lyrics is echoed and amplified by the musicians' sensitive performances. Rix like Wood does nothing to get in the way of Walker, his guitar, his voice and his songs; his job was to make sure all is heard in full glory. Gotta Get Back is a little less guitar-heavy but manages to be timeless overall even more so than its immediate predecessor. That timeless factor get raised a tad with some help close to Walker's heart, which brings us back to that family of his. He brought in his father, mother and sister to contribute to string parts for a handful of tunes, something that Seth hadn't had on his records since Leap Of Faith three albums back, but this time, it's - ahem - personal. He even assigned dad Scott the task of creating the string arrangements and three sat in a semi-circle around the son as he stood with his guitar and let that naturally soulful voice of his stream out. The best of these family affairs, "The Sound Of Your Voice," is lifted by Scott Walker's thoughtful string arrangement coming in and out of focus around a nocturnal organ; the chart pours some syrup on it with none of the sappiness. The presence of orchestral flourishes do nothing to disrupt the overall down-home vibe of Walker's music, and while there's that emphasis on "gettin' back," much of the music is connected to Walker's current New Orleans environs. That is unmistakable when the album leads off with a couple of Big Easy funky numbers "High Time" and "Fire In The Belly." The former is fueled by frisky piano tinkling and Chris Wood's acoustic bass, and the latter by Walker's own good 'n' dirty Jimmie Vaughan guitar. "Way Past Midnight" is yet more joyful Nola reverie, a Seth Walker twist on 'Fess Longhair. It's not just the Creole stuff, there's almost no Southern-birthed music style Walker doesn't present here with style, grace and nothing more. A little church organ and spiritual chorus of vocals help to make "Back Around" a gospel delight and a rockabilly guitar puts a accent on the jazzy RnB number "Movin' On." "Call My Name" is a serving of soul-drenched folk-rock characteristic of classic Dobie Gray, "Turn This Thing Around" sounds inspired by the pre-Beatles doo-wop rock of Dion, and then there's the breezy, Caribbean soul of "Dreamer." Walker takes the airplane to a soft landing with his last couple of songs. "Gotta Get Back" encapsulates Walker's seamless blend of country, blues and folk ever so subtly reinforced by a horn arrangement and "Blow Wind Blow" is just Walker with an acoustic guitar, harmony vocals and his familial string section. North Carolina, Nashville, New York, Austin or New Orleans, it doesn't matter where Seth walker hangs his fedora, his rich musical upbringing is always there with him, on this album and, really, any of his records. Gotta Get Back can't be considered return to his core strengths and values when he never really strayed from them.
