Artist: David Weiss Title: The Mirror Year Of Release: 2004 Label: Fresh Sound Records Genre: Jazz Quality: Mp3 / 320kbps Total Time: 62:28 min Total Size: 142 MB Tracklist ---------- 01. Stalker 02. The Mirror 03. Nostalghia 04. Our Trip 05. The Sacrifice 06. Love Letter to One Not Yet Met 07. Mr. Jin Trumpeter David Weiss continues his award-winning ways and stretches the boundaries of his trumpeting skills with The Mirror, a seven-track follow-up to his highly acclaimed debut, Breathing Room. This is an excellent set that was inspired by the works of Russian filmmaker Andrei Tarkovsky. Weiss' pieces relate to images and emotional textures, while his versatile storytelling contains a combination of dynamics, colors, and moods. As the leader of the New Jazz Composers Octet, Weiss has built a solid reputation for his ability to evoke memorable performances from his solid sextet of Xavier Davis, Marcus Strickland, Myron Walden, Dwayne Burno, and E.J. Strickland. The set opens with the energetic "Stalker," a straight-ahead burner that features Weiss' excellent chops out front over a blazing drum line and steady piano beat. Strickland takes over with a multifaceted tenor saxophone solo that documents his exceptional skills. Strickland has definitely evolved, and his explosion of musical colors is a solid and worthy improvisation. "The Mirror" is nearly 11 minutes long and reflects many of the dynamics inherent in Weiss' amazing writing and instrumental influences. His strong melodic sense is both evolved and complex but highly entertaining. Davis offers a great piano solo that extends into free jazz territory; however, the melodic structure never strays too far to be disruptive or atonal. "Mr. Jin," written by Wayne Shorter, features Weiss collaborating with the inimitable Nasheet Waits on drums, Craig Handy on tenor sax, Steve Davis on trombone, and Norbert Stachel on bari sax and bass clarinet. This is a great blowing vehicle; together, the musicians take the song to another level that will blow you away with its timeless brass and wind resonance and themes. http://rapidgator.net/file/3011c8495559d5460314478ce486b0f2/DavidWeissMirror.rar.html http://ssh.tf/6vzj2mvEP/DavidWeissMirror.rar http://uploaded.net/file/zaf20rnv/DavidWeissMirror.rar

Artist: Chuck E. Weiss Title: 23rd And Stout Year Of Release: 2006 Label: Cooking Vinyl Genre: Rock, Roots, Blues Quality: Mp3/320 kbps Total Time: 42:19 Total Size: 106 Mb Tracklist: 1. Prince Minsky's Lament (Weiss) 2. Sho Is Cold (Gilkyson, Weiss) 3. Novade Nada (Holiday, Weiss) 4. Half Off at the Rebop Shop (Weiss) 5. Another Drunken Sailor Song (The Lil' Ligeemo Song) (Weiss) 6. Room with a View (Coulter, Weiss) 7. Fake Dance (Weiss) 8. Primrose Lane (Callender, Shanklin) 9. 23rd and Stout (An Incident with Marshall Bell) (Dimes, Nelson, Weiss) 10. Man Tan (Weiss, Wood) 11. The Phone Conversation (Gilkyson, Weiss) 12. Piccolo Pete (Weiss, Whittmann) 13. Goodbye, So Long (Turner) After more than 30 years in the music biz, Chuck E. Weiss is still best known (a) as one of Tom Waits' best friends, and (b) for being the subject of Rickie Lee Jones' hit "Chuck E.'s in Love." The latter distinction hasn't done much for him lately, but he seems to be counting on the former to draw interest in his fourth album, 23rd & Stout. Most of 23rd & Stout sounds like some unreleased Tom Waits album that walks in a Twilight Zone between the Beefheart-influenced throb of Swordfishtrombones and the laid-back beatnik vibe of Blue Valentine. While it's entirely possible that Waits has borrowed a bit of his buddy Weiss' schtick over the years, there's also little argument that Waits is far better at it, and it doesn't help that Weiss' band here (headlined by Tony Gilkyson on guitar and Don Heffington on drums) isn't able to deliver the gloriously strange groove of Waits' more recent work, though the group sounds great on the jazz-leaning material. When Weiss goes into a shaggy-dog story like the title cut or a lurching stomp such as "Prince Minsky's Lament," it's all but impossible not to compare him to Waits, but in all fairness Weiss is a better than average songwriter, and when he lets his funny side take over (like he does on "Half Off at the Rebop Shop," "Sho Is Cold," or "Piccolo Pete"), he's an enjoyable and absorbing performer. (His sly interpretation of "Primrose Lane" also suggests he could deliver a fine set of standards if he were so inclined.) Too much of 23rd & Stout makes Chuck E. Weiss sound like the Baja Marimba Band to Tom Waits' Tijuana Brass, and the shame of that is he's clearly talented enough establish a more distinctive creative identity by now, as the best moments of this album confirm. http://rapidgator.net/file/447aaf4338c6590a7e39b1592a8ec9b8/cewttas.rar.html http://ssh.tf/gmXRqWrDP/cewttas.rar http://uploaded.net/file/kgeel486/cewttas.rar

Artist: Michael Weiss Title: Milestones Year Of Release: 2000 Label: SteepleChase Genre: Jazz Quality: Mp3 / 256kbps Total Time: 63:12 min Total Size: 113 MB Tracklist ---------- 01. Milestones 02. Wave 03. Walter Davis Ascending 04. Just One of Those Things 05. Little Melonae 06. Buffalo 07. Like Someone in Love 08. Love for Sale 09. Stella by Starlight One of many yeoman New York musicians who goes about his work without much fanfare, pianist Michael Weiss is certainly one of the city's finest despite his low profile. Since 1981, he has been an active jazz educator and musician who has spent time with such masters as Art Farmer, Johnny Griffin, and Junior Cook. With only two previous albums under his own name available (one for Criss Cross and another for DIW/Disc Union), the release of this new SteepleChase disc is a valuable addition to Weiss' catalog. A modest trio affair with bassist Paul Gill and drummer Joe Farnsworth (both currently backing singer Diana Krall), Milestones easily qualifies as an excellent example of the art of piano trio jazz. A set of standards provides the fodder for Weiss and crew, with the debut of Jackie McLean's "Walter Davis Ascending" thrown in for good measure. Jobim's "Wave" receives a most venerable and engaging makeover, with Farnsworth's supple Latin groove providing a charged impetus for Weiss' string of incendiary choruses. Kenny Dorham's "Buffalo" also proves to be an astute choice for investigation with Weiss laying down the blues with aplomb. Both McLean's "Little Melonae" and "Just One of Those Things" provide high octane bebop and further proof that Weiss is a multi-talented player capable of undertaking any style or genre. Contributing to the overall success of this affair are the efforts of Gill and Farnsworth. The former is surely one of the brightest of up-and-coming bassists, while the latter has already caught the ears of anyone in touch with the current scene due to his highly musical and complimentary drumming. If there's one disappointment, it might be that the other standards are not quite as creatively altered as the aforementioned highlights, allowing a touch of sameness to creep in towards the end of the disc. That aside, however, there's enough engaging material here to more than push this one over the top and send it off with a solid recommendation. ~ C.
