At The Burnside 3:49 Though the Twilight Sad's debut, Fourteen Autumns & Fifteen Winters, and its follow-up, Forget the Night Ahead, were released only two years apart, it feels like more time than that elapsed in the band's evolution. Granted, the band kept busy during that time, releasing the EP Here, It Never Snowed, Afterwards It Did and the compilation album Killed My Parents and Hit the Road and touring with acts like Mogwai. Just how important that activity was to this album becomes apparent quickly: one of the songs collected on Killed My Parents and Hit the Road was the band's cover of the Smiths' "Half a Person," and Forget the Night Ahead's lead track, "Reflection of the Television," with its dense guitars and James Graham's sullen croon, sounds uncannily like a collaboration between Morrissey and Mogwai. While those elements have always been present in the Twilight Sad's music, they've never been so clear; indeed, one of the most notable things about the album is just how much clearer the band's sound is here than it was on Fourteen Autumns & Fifteen Winters. Here, a heavier, denser attack replaces that album's atmospheric drift; these songs are as moody as ever, but muscular -- the guitar roar on "I Became a Prostitute" and "That Birthday Present" recalls Shellac as much as it does My Bloody Valentine or the Twilight Sad's other cited influences. The band's writing is also more direct, giving the album a blunter feel, but the emotions swirling in these songs are still complex. Regret, revenge, and reassurance mingle in Graham's voice when he sings "You and I will bury them all" on "Interrupted" or "Blood is never spilled after dinner" on "The Room." I figured it would include mostly covers of classic Blues favorites, a few original tunes, and some Christian Blues songs to round it all out. That was the plan. I liked the idea of an eclectic album with a mix of secular and Christian songs. It matched my philosophy of how Christian artists should operate: no harsh dividing line between the secular and the spiritual. All together in one blended package, just like the real life that God gives us day to day. It was a good plan. But then a problem came up. A really good problem. The most wonderful blessed problem I ever could have hoped for. You see, the Crimson Blues band got started, and we began playing High Octane Christian Blues with reckless abandon. What followed was the most prolific and creative songwriting period in my entire life. Never before did I get so inspired and crank out so many songs. And they were not just Blues songs - they were Christian Blues songs. High Octane Christian Blues songs, and lots of them! In my High School and College days, I wrote more bad songs than good. But now, decades later, things were different. Not only was I writing more songs, they were actually worth keeping. And they were all about Jesus. And here is why it became such a problem: it could never all fit on one CD. It was then I realized there had to be two solo CD albums. "The Bluez Projekt" was the CD where all my secular recordings would go. And all my new Christian Blues songs would go on this album: "Slide Ahead". Most of these songs are originals, touching on many different styles of Blues. There is a strong dose of swampy Delta Blues, along with some Blues Rock and even some Southern Rock. Much of it is experimental in one way or another, including the use of a homemade Soup Can guitar! And all of it is laid at the Foot of the Cross. "Slide Ahead" owes its very existence to the God-given inspiration that came from the Crimson Blues band. Though these are solo recordings that I made alone, my bandmates and the environment of divine inspiration made all the difference. Having God's Hand of Blessing, being surrounded by those incredible Christian musicians and brothers... how could such a body of musical work not come out of it? These songs turned out exactly how I wanted to hear them played. They are something I can leave behind when I leave this world. I am so amazingly blessed to have been able to create this truly unique Christian Blues album. Out of the Darkness, and Into the Light (Allen) - 7:44 Benny Golson - tenor saxophone Mike LeDonne - piano Buster Williams - bass Carl Allen - drums At age eighty-seven, saxophonist Benny Golson is one of the last surviving links to the Golden Age of modern jazz, ushered in by the likes of Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, Bud Powell, Kenny Clarke and others in the early '40s. Golson came on the bop scene about a decade later and has been a force ever since, whether playing, composing, arranging, buttressing Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers or leading groups of various sizes. In 1956, Golson wrote "Whisper Not," the first of several of his works that may properly be labeled jazz standards. That list includes (but is not limited to) "I Remember Clifford," "Blues March," "Along Came Betty" and "Killer Joe." On tenor sax, Golson has his own voice, a husky, vibrato-laden dialect out of the Ben Webster / Coleman Hawkins school with an occasional nod to Lester Young and subtle permutations that set him apart from those and other forebears. If time has dulled Golson's razor-sharp mind or degraded his admirable technique, it's certainly not apparent on Horizon Ahead, on which Golson is in total command of a much-more-youthful rhythm section. To further press home the point, he composed four of the album's nine selections including the title song, (presumably) arranged the first eight tracks, and even wrote the elaborate liner notes. Aside from Golson's winning themes, the menu consists of Ellington's "Mood Indigo" and "Don't Get Around Much Anymore," the standards "Lulu's Back in Town" and "Three Little Words," and Carl Allen's solo drum piece, "Out of the Darkness, and Into the Light" (the last preceded by Golson's astute spoken introduction). There's a pleasing aura of self-assurance and self-control throughout, even when Golson and his mates are wailing, as on "Jump Start," "Domingo" or "Three Little Words." Pianist Mike LeDonne plays his role as accompanist / soloist with aplomb, as does bassist Buster Williams (who duets with Golson on a charming version of "Lulu's Back in Town"). Allen's timekeeping is up to its usual standards, so no more need be said about that. At an age that is far past retirement for most mortals, Benny Golson not only keeps working but showing a younger generation that when it comes to contemporary jazz, maturity and experience are dependable allies in the ongoing battle with Father Time.
