The Night Before Christmas With a style that crosses '70s-style light rock and orchestrated pop, Steven Curtis Chapman has been one of the most prominent performers of contemporary Christian music since the '80s. Born and raised in Paducah, Kentucky, Chapman learned to play several instruments while hanging out in his father's music store, excelling at guitar and piano. As a young man, he enrolled as a pre-med student at Anderson College in Indiana. He soon decided to pursue a music career and dropped out to go to Nashville, where he began working in a music show at Opryland USA. When not performing, he was busy writing songs, a skill he learned from his father. One of Chapman's tunes was recorded by the Imperials, a prominent gospel group, marking the beginning of his songwriting success; many of gospel and country's brightest stars, including Sandi Patti, Billy Dean, Glen Campbell, and Roger Whittaker, have gone on to record Chapman's songs. Although several different labels and music publishers were interested in him by 1987, he decided to sign with the major Christian music company Sparrow. That year he cut his first album, First Hand. The first single released from the album, "Weak Days," made it to number two on the contemporary Christian chart. His second album, 1988's Real Life Conversations, earned him four more hits, including the number one song "His Eyes." Co-written with James Isaac Elliott, it earned the Contemporary Recorded Song of the Year award from the Gospel Music Association in 1989. That year, he also won a GMA award for Best Songwriter of the Year. Released later that year, his third album, More to This Life, contained four number one hits and in 1990 earned him an unprecedented ten nominations at the GMA Awards (he won five). His next album, For the Sake of the Call, which contained five number one singles and earned him another slew of GMA awards and his first Grammy in the Best Pop Gospel Album category, only strengthened his position as the king of Christian music. In 1992, Chapman made a successful bid to attract a more mainstream audience with The Great Adventure, which also won a Grammy, and its accompanying title track video. When Sparrow Records was purchased by EMI/Liberty, they began marketing the album in discount stores, and in 1993, it went gold. Also released in 1993 (both as a video and CD), The Live Adventure won more GMA awards and also earned Chapman a new award from American Songwriter magazine, Songwriter and Artist of the Year. Chapman released his seventh album, Heaven in the Real World, in 1994 and embarked on a major tour. In 1996, Chapman released Signs of Life, which was followed three years later by Speechless. Though Chapman's albums had always done well on the Billboard CCM charts, in 2001, after the release of Declaration, he really began to get even more attention on the Top 200. Both it and 2002's All About Love peaked in the Top 15, and his 2004 record, All Things New, made it to number 22. In September 2005, in time for the holiday season, Chapman released All I Really Want for Christmas, and the following year Musical Blessing came out. Beauty Will Rise, a tribute written in the wake of the death of his daughter Maria, arrived in 2009. Following 2011's Re:Creation, he left his longtime label Sparrow Records and signed with Reunion Records, which released Joy, Chapman's third Christmas album, in 2012. His first album of all-new material in four years, The Glorious Unfolding arrived in 2013, with another seasonal album, Christmas Hymns, following a year later. The trombone can be smoothly seductive, raucous, rasping or cheekily fruity by turn. Curtis Fuller is a master of the instrument, a veteran of six decades of top flight jazz who is still full of creativity as a player and writer. Featuring his regular sextet, Down Home is an absolutely delightful recording-a sophisticated collection of tunes performed with a real sense of joy. Fuller's place in jazz history was assured with his appearance on saxophonist John Coltrane's Blue Train (Blue Note, 1957), at the age of 22. Fuller's tone may have softened in the intervening decades and, in later years, his respiratory power has diminished somewhat, but he remains a player with a consummate command of the trombone and its various tones and textures. Above all, he can still swing-his sense of dynamics and his soulful approach to playing ensure that he continues to produce some fine music. Fuller contributes six tunes to Down Home, a selection which proves that his compositional ability is just as strong as his playing. "Down Home" has a joyful, swinging groove driven by Ken Walker's jaunty bass line; "Ladies Night" has something of a "Blue Train" feel to its opening refrain; and "Sweetness" is a gentle swinger featuring trumpeter Alan Hood's precise, muted, solo. "The High Priest" is an up-tempo, hard bop tune driven by Walker and drummer Todd Reid, who both play with invention; indeed, the whole sextet lets loose on this terrific, high-energy number. Pianist Chip Stephens' cheerful, mid-tempo "C Hip's Blues" features a raw-toned solo from Fuller; by contrast, the pianist's "Sadness And Soul" is a ballad whose mood is, as the title suggests, more melancholy and reflective, with Hood and tenor saxophonist Keith Oxman joining Fuller to deliver its graceful melody. Oxman's "Jonli Bercosta" is another up-tempo, hard bop swinger with strong ensemble playing and a standout solo from the saxophonist. While Fuller is a dominant presence on Down Home, the other musicians each add their own personalities to the music. This is a tight, cohesive, ensemble with a great feel for the music; Down Home wouldn't sound the same if even one of these players was absent. God knows, Mayfield has usually been uneven, but until now he's always managed to crank himself up at least once per LP and push his pretty, quavery voice over the line into conviction. Even on an outright bad record like Sweet Exorcist, there was that amazing title song, with its fluky, amiable beat and the outrageously funny conceit of its main character. The new album is ostensibly a collection of love songs, from the tough and carnal ("Do It All Night") to the sweet and spiritual ("In Love, in Love, in Love," "Keeps Me Loving You"). But the LP's real theme is stated in another of its song titles: "Party, Party." Most of the time, Mayfield's lyrics just prattle on about moving and grooving, while the music, brittle and shrilly produced, sets its dance rhythms on automatic. Only in the slow and delicate "Keeps Me Loving You" does the singer create a thoughtful, tender moment. Throughout Do It All Night, Mayfield sounds distracted or simply confused, as if he'd started a song with something in mind, forgotten what it was, but kept going anyway. The galvanizing tension of a good, obsessive love affair-a feeling that suffused his unheralded masterpiece, Give, Get, Take and Have (1976) - is now Curtis Mayfield's Great Lost Theme. In 2006 Curtis Salgado was diagnosed with liver cancer and given eight months to live unless he underwent a half-million-dollar operation. The money was raised from benefits by friends of Salgado such as Bonnie Raitt, Robert Cray, Steve Miller, and Taj Mahal, and donations from fans. After the successful transplant, the cancer spread to his lungs, requiring yet another operation. On his first post-cancer release, anyone not knowing what he went through would be astonished that he could come out of the ordeal sounding this healthy. Salgado enlisted members of the Phantom Blues Band and drummer/producer Tony Braunagel to handle the backing, and the combination is a natural extension of the soul-blues stew the singer/harpist has been cooking up since his first solo album in 1991. It takes confidence in your vocal abilities to cover tunes sung by Smokey Robinson ("Who's Lovin' You"), Al Green ("Let's Get Married"), and Little Richard ("I Don't Want to Discuss It"), but Salgado is up to the challenge and turns in striking performances that do justice to -- or, in the case of the Robinson tune, improve on -- the originals. Elsewhere, Salgado wades in the rocking swamp blues of "Heartache," shifts into Johnny "Guitar" Watson funk-soul mode for the title track, and heads to Memphis for the Hi-styled "Drivin' in the Drivin' Rain," the latter one of four originals co-written by Salgado. There's more than a little Delbert McClinton to his raspy voice, which he uses to terrific effect on the moody, obsessive "My Confessions." The rollicking Clapton tune "Bottle of Red Wine" is a perfect vehicle for Salgado's soul shake, and gives him a chance to blow some tough harp. Blues looms large in his catalog of influences, and Salgado pays tribute to one of the genre's icons in "20 Years of B.B. King" with lyrics comprised predominantly of King song titles. It sounds corny, but he pulls it off due to his obvious sincerity and by playing it straight. The connection with the Phantom Blues Band is both natural and inspired as they lay into this material but never steal the spotlight from Salgado, who sounds enthused and, well, glad to be alive.
