Brown (synthesizer). Dave Sereny crossed my way first time with his fantastic collection Jazz Room (2004), a five-CD series (Latin Jazz, Classic Jazz, Vocal Jazz, Jazz Sampler, Smooth Jazz). This collection was released by Dave Sereny's label Groove United which was established by Dave and his brother Mike Sereny in 1996. I had the opportunity and pleasure to review these recordings in the past. Toronto based Sereny was a multiple nominee at the 2006 Canadian Smooth Jazz Awards. The Canadians really support their musicians. He performed with jazz and rock greats such as Kenwood Denar, Ritchie Cole, Jose Feliciano, Alex Lifeson of Rush, Rex Smith and Mark Whitfield. The album starts with a cover of Give It To Me Baby. This essential classic Funk song was one of the greatest hits Rick James had and was originally released on his million-selling album Street Songs (1981). Dave's interpretation is elegant and smoothes out the vicious guitar tone of the original still keeping it cool and vibrant. Funkified is a creation of Darren Rahn, that means he has written the song, made the awesome horn arrangement and also played the additional wah guitar. Darren has just released his sax album Once In A Lifetime (2005). Funk is en vogue now and this track brings it on the top. Darren is also known for his fantastic remakes of classics for Wayman Tisdale. Do For Love was penned by Dave. Chicago native Lemoyne Alexander levels the tune up to a seductive modern song with the soulful vocals of Canadian / Hungarian song bird Delilah and his special keyboard loops. The song Take This Ride is featuring N'Dea Davenport and Ladybug Mecca. N'Dea is a singer best known for her role in the Brand New Heavies, a British funk/R&B band, a group responsible for the Acid Jazz wave in the early 90s. Ladybug Mecca is known by her rap work with Digable Planet. Two power women and Dave's dream guitar revives the Acid Jazz wave. On Fly Away Dave's elder brother Mike adds roaring organ grooves to Dave's eclectic guitar sound while Delilah waves in her beautiful siren vocals. Delilah came in contact with Dave by her brother Paul Lakatos, a guitar virtuoso, who is performing in Toronto's jazz clubs. Lucy is featuring jazz legend Bob James on piano. Written by Omar Edwards, who performs synth and keys on this tune, this tune needs some second spins to develop in your mind. Bass player Nathan Watts wrote Keep Goin'. He is Stevie Wonder's bassist since 33 years and played on most of Stevie's albums since 1975. His goal is to finally put out a solo CD; it will be a combination of vocal tunes and bass-heavy instrumentals. Keep this tune in mind and you can await a really good album. On This Time audience can listen to the signature bass sound of Wayman Tisdale. Wayman plays a melodic bass accompanying Dave's guitar journey in his own style. St. Tropez is a chic city in southern France, located on the French Riviera. Popular for its famous and wealthy guests, it is often called the Marbella of France. Dave perfectly catches the glamour of this town in his song. Luxury of Love is featuring the lucid sax of Warren Hill. Lucubration and melody or improvisation and chaos that are the poles between which musicians are drawn. This song is certainly placed at the pole of melody, mellow and smooth like a lullaby. Victor George Street was written by Dave under the influence of George Benson, the lead melody of the song has this classic attraction which tickles my brain activity. Closer of this album is the seductive Blueberry Groove. Dave has a talent for hooking melodies. With keyboardist Lemoyne Alexander on his side it's easy to translate notes in action. Saints And Sinners Dave Stryker is a strong guitarist with an excellent back-catalog of credits to his name. While Strike Up The Band doesn't show off his full capabilities in their best light, it makes for a listenable jaunt, and a clear reminder that musicians on Stryker's level can seek out more demanding material. The album has a definite polish: Nils Winther's production is of a very high quality, and each of the four musicians plays with a distinctive and clear sound, too. So at root, the disappointment of the album is in its material. There are no bad songs here, to be sure; but neither are there any challenges, for the listener or for the musicians. Half the tracks are constructed over the same essential textures and tempos. Although the title track is indeed different from Gershwin's original envisioning, it burns with a high energy (thanks largely to a percussive rising line on the bass) that never resolves into anything. As a result, it's hard to tell what the effect of the arrangement is supposed to be: it feels tense and a little empty at once. Pianist Xavier Davis has a conventional style, but he relies prin[beeep]lly on the adapted language of minor pentatonic harmony first popularized by McCoy Tyner. It's a great, full sound, but when used equally on "Airegin," "Strike Up The Band" and "Saints and Sinners," it loses some of its poignancy. There are definitely highpoints, though. "What Is This?" makes for a quirky play on "What Is This Thing Called Love?" And "I Love You," after an urbane bass riff under the intro and melody, features an intelligent guitar solo, though not Stryker's most dynamic. Vibraphonist Dave Pike sticks here exclusively to the marimba, while pianist Herbie Hancock is heard throughout on organ, an instrument he rarely played again. The band also includes two trumpeters (most notably Clark Terry who has a few short solos) and a rhythm section with guitarist Billy Butler. Most of the music consists of obscurities and is open to the influences of the boogaloo and pop rhythms of the era; highlights include Hancock's "Blind Man, Blind Man," "Sunny" and "Devilette." An interesting effort. A classic little album that's every bit as groovy as its cover - served up by vibist Dave Pike, and one of the first true expressions of his talents! Weckl was born in St. Louis and grew up listening to soul and jazz; he received his first drum set at age eight and developed his playing by listening to drummers like Buddy Rich, as well as R&B grooves. He majored in jazz at the University of Bridgeport, but left after two years to become involved in the New York jazz scene, also touring Europe with various bands. Weckl joined a fusion group called Nitesprite, where he attracted the attention of drummer Peter Erskine; Erskine helped him get a gig with French Toast, a band also featuring pianist Michel Camilo and bassist Anthony Jackson. From French Toast, Weckl branched out into session work, playing on numerous early-'80s sessions with the likes of Bill Connors (Return to Forever), the Brecker Brothers, T??nia Maria, Paquito D'Rivera, Eliane Elias, and George Benson, as well as pop and soul albums for Diana Ross, Madonna, and Robert Plant. In 1986, Chick Corea saw Weckl performing in New York with guitarist Connors and invited the drummer to join his new Elektric Band. Weckl spent a total of seven years with Corea, performing on numerous albums and also appearing with Corea's Akoustic Band; his skills received considerable esteem, and he augmented his work with Corea by continuing his session work and appearing often with the GRP All-Star Big Band. Weckl also released a series of instructional videos, and in 1990 he led his first solo date, with Master Plan for GRP. Heads Up followed in 1992, as well as Hard-Wired in 1994. Upon leaving Corea, Weckl's primary focus was recording and touring with guitarist Mike Stern; he also continued his work as a sideman. In 1998, Weckl led the R&B-oriented date Rhythm of the Soul, a return to his other boyhood musical love, and the like-minded Synergy followed in 1999. The Dave Weckl Band had really gelled by the time of Transition's 2000 release, but Weckl didn't leave teaching behind, either, and released another instructional recording, The Zone, in 2001. Like all forms of art, the result is a session that includes drama, variety, and a story that attaches different meanings to each viewer or listener. The singer's "My Old Man" and "The Same Situation" are presented with their melodies intact; however, the quartet delivers with its own interpretation that excites the listener's imagination. The trumpeter's compositions represent some of his best work. His lovely waltz "First Frost" provides space for Douglas, Carrothers, and Genus to offer individual solos that sing out like a vocalist's melodies. "Movement" steps close to the outer fringe edges of the modern mainstream in jazz. Douglas turns up the heat and the other members of the quartet provide an appropriate wall of sound. Their wall is like a tapestry, which has many interesting colors and patterns available for study. (5:59) As the '60s became the '70s and the Nixon/Agnew repression set in, Dave Brubeck threw himself entirely into sympathy with youth; hence this often-vehement choral cantata, written as a reaction to the Kent State and Mississipi State killings. The danger here is that such a work might quickly become dated, although Brubeck, like Benjamin Britten before him in the War Requiem and Leonard Bernstein concurrently in his Mass, tried to alleviate that by juxtaposing protest with religious texts. Amidst the fugal writing, twelve-tone subjects and other erudite classical techniques, Brubeck indulges in a sour assassination of "The Star Spangled Banner," and echoes of "Taps" and "Over There," and a bizarre yet oddly effective prelude, with a country/jazz/rock jam turning into a big-band/symphonic rampage. The big problems occur when Brubeck lets his son Chris's rock group New Heavenly Blue carry the ball, for their passages are filled with embarrassing cliches, musical and literary, made even more quaint by the poor recording quality. Erich Kunzel and the Cincinnati Symphony give their all, but Brubeck doesn't give his piano much to do outside the Prelude.
