Coursera: Economics of Money and Banking - Part One WEBRip | English | MP4 + PDF Guides + work files | 960 x 540 | AVC ~222 kbps | 25 fps AAC | 125 Kbps | 48.0 KHz | 2 channels | Subs: English | ~11 hours | 2.18 GB Genre: eLearning Video / Business, Economics and finances Introduction to a "money view" of economic activity for modern times, building on the intellectual traditions of British central banking and American institutionalism. Part One explores the economics of payment systems and money markets. Part Two explores connections with foreign exchange and capital markets. The last three or four decades have seen a remarkable evolution in the institutions that comprise the modern monetary system. The financial crisis of 2007-2009 is a wakeup call that we need a similar evolution in the analytical apparatus and theories that we use to understand that system. Produced and sponsored by the Institute for New Economic Thinking, this course is an attempt to begin the process of new economic thinking by reviving and updating some forgotten traditions in monetary thought that have become newly relevant. Three features of the new system are central. Most important, the intertwining of previously separate capital markets and money markets has produced a system with new dynamics as well as new vulnerabilities. The financial crisis revealed those vulnerabilities for all to see. The result was two years of desperate innovation by central banking authorities as they tried first this, and then that, in an effort to stem the collapse. Second, the global character of the crisis has revealed the global character of the system, which is something new in postwar history but not at all new from a longer time perspective. Central bank cooperation was key to stemming the collapse, and the details of that cooperation hint at the outlines of an emerging new international monetary order. Third, absolutely central to the crisis was the operation of key derivative contracts, most importantly credit default swaps and foreign exchange swaps. Modern money cannot be understood separately from modern finance, nor can modern monetary theory be constructed separately from modern financial theory. That's the reason this course places dealers, in both capital markets and money markets, at the very center of the picture, as profit-seeking suppliers of market liquidity to the new system of market-based credit. In this course, I will take you through the tabular and graphical methods that one can use to turn data into information using Microsoft Excel. There are no prerequisites required to take this course as I will start all the concepts from scratch. How is this course structured? First, I will take you through some basics of data - collection techniques and types. Then, I will discuss the tabular and graphical methods available to summarize the data (along with their working in excel) depending on what type of data we have. After covering these methods, I will tell you some tips that you should use while deciding which chart type to choose for summarizing your data. (Not every chart or graph is suitable for all kinds of data) Finally, we will end the course with some tips on how to get your audience's attention, how to make your data speak and some applications to solidify your learning. Why should you take this course? Because, its better to spend a couple of hours learning how to summarize and present your data than spending days to try and make sense of the data without knowing these methods. 5. TTC Video - Behavioral Economics: When Psychology and Economics Collide Course No. 5532 | .MKV, AVC, 672 kbps, 1024x576 | English, AAC, 96 kbps, 2 Ch | 24x30 mins | + PDF Guidebook | 3.7 GB Lecturer: Scott Huettel, Ph.D. Behavioral economics is the scientific study of decision making, and of the related topics of valuation, exchange, and interpersonal interactions. Drawing on methods from psychology, sociology, neurology, and economics, this remarkable dis[beeep]line illuminates one of the most deeply fundamental activities of human existence: the decision process. Show Full Description From the moment we wake in the morning, we are confronted with decisions-from what to buy at the supermarket or how to spend the weekend to which career path to pursue, which car to buy, or how to invest our money. Most of the time we make good decisions. But some of the time we don't. Whether our decisions are successful or less than optimal influences how our lives unfold. Paradoxically, although we are constantly making decisions, we rarely reflect on the actual process of decision making itself. Making decisions can seem largely intuitive-and intuitions don't always lead to happy outcomes. But what if you could be fully aware of the process? What might life be like if you could put your hands on the gears of decision making-the specific patterns of perception and cognition that shape your choices-and turn the process to your advantage? Behavioral economics offers just that possibility. With an incisive focus on human behavior, behavioral economics uncovers what is usually hidden from view in our decision-making process, exploring the key motivators for our decisions, such as probability, risk, reward, and the passage of time. In doing so, it sheds fascinating light on our psychology and on how our brains process information and shape our perceptions as we make decisions. Most important, by applying its unique approach to many kinds of real-life choices, behavioral economics offers powerful, practical tools for making better and more satisfying decisions. As a case in point, behavioral economics identifies many human biases or behavioral tendencies that influence our decisions, sometimes outside of our awareness. Behavioral economists show, for example, that our brains predispose us to see things that are familiar as being better or more valuable-making name-brand merchandise or stocks of familiar companies seem desirable. This innate human tendency can lead to bad economic decisions. The good news, as behavioral economics clearly shows, is that our customary processes and patterns of decision making are not inevitable. By becoming aware of them and watching how they operate in our daily actions, we can open new possibilities for our own behavior and for decision making that can meaningfully improve our quality of life. In Behavioral Economics: When Psychology and Economics Collide, award-winning Professor Scott Huettel of Duke University leads you in a penetrating look at the processes of decision making that are an integral part of human life. In 24 revealing lectures, you'll study how behavioral economists look at decision making and explore a set of core prin[beeep]les that offer profound insight into how we gather information and integrate multiple factors to reach decisions. Using real-life examples and case studies, each topic builds to concrete recommendations so that you can understand the patterns of decision making, the purposes they serve, and how to use your knowledge to make more effective and beneficial decisions. Uncover the Hidden Structures in Decision Making Professor Huettel brings focus to intriguing and seemingly paradoxical questions regarding human behavior: Why does voluntary blood donation decline steeply when people are paid for it? When faced with the same medical condition, why do doctors choose objectively better treatment for their patients than they do for themselves? Why do employees often fail to enroll in beneficial retirement plans, including plans requiring no financial contribution on their part? All of these may seem counterintuitive, yet they have a deep structure that we can understand when we apply the tools of behavioral economics. In grasping the underlying factors in decision making, you'll explore key topics such as these: Simple rules: "heuristics": Study the common internal guidelines people use to streamline decision making, or "heuristics"; observe four of the most prevalent ones, using real-life examples; and identify where heuristics are helpful and where they fail. Decisions regarding probability: Learn how human beings convert objective information about probability into a subjective sense of what may happen-an approach filled with error-and grasp two methods for improving probability-based decisions. Time-related decisions: Consider why decisions involving time are so challenging; study how time influences the subjective value of money; and learn key strategies for making better time-related decisions. Dealing with risk: Examine the element of risk tolerance in decision making; investigate the dynamics of perceived benefits versus perceived risks in decision problems; and study prin[beeep]les for successfully managing risk. High stakes: medical decisions: Uncover three core factors that influence how we make medical decisions, and learn how to apply the prin[beeep]les of behavioral economics to improve choices in this area. Group decision making: Explore how the diversity of groups benefits decision making, and investigate the prin[beeep]les that lead to good group decisions and how to use those prin[beeep]les in a range of practical contexts. Behavioral Biases: Turning Limitations into Strengths As a central element of these lectures, Professor Huettel highlights cognitive patterns that influence our behavior, pushing us toward safety, temptation, or immediate rewards. Among these is what behavioral economists call confirmation bias-the tendency, in decision making, to intuitively seek evidence that confirms our existing beliefs, or to reinterpret evidence that argues against existing beliefs. Using clear-cut examples, you'll learn how you can counteract or minimize this bias, leading to better-informed and wiser choices. The course concludes with an in-depth look at two highly effective approaches to shaping decisions. "Precommitment" to a course of action involves making a binding decision in the present for benefits that will occur in the future. "Reframing" strategies alter how the facts of a decision are evaluated against some reference point, allowing critical new insights to appear. You'll explore the powerful effects of precommitment and reframing in examples ranging from economic transactions and consumer choices to decisions regarding investment and retirement. Practical Leverage for Empowering Choices In Behavioral Economics: When Psychology and Economics Collide, you'll gain a much deeper awareness of how you make decisions, and what steps you can take to make better ones. Professor Huettel illustrates each concept with meaningful stories, analogies, and case studies, relating the material directly to the decisions all of us make as a central part of living. This unique inquiry offers you important knowledge and insights for one of life's most essential skills. e! 9. TTC Video - The Economics of Uncertainty English | .M4V, AVC, 2000 kbps, 640x360 | AAC, 128 kbps, 2 Ch | 24x30 mins | 11.13 Gb Genre: eLearning Economies are deeply complex systems. The global marketplace even national, state and local economies involve many economic actors behaving in rational and irrational ways, sustaining a dizzying array of interconnected activity. Because of the nuMber of parti[beeep]nts involved in this global exchange, the unpredictability of their actions, and the sheer variety of possible actions, some degree of economic uncertainty is inevitable. Lecturer: Professor Connel Fullenkamp Ph.D. In one of the most dramatic displays of economic uncertainty in our times, a wave of toxic loans almost brought down the American financial system in 2008-2009, and with it jobs and savings. Few experts forecast this catastrophe, which stands as a lesson in the power of economic forces to defy our predictions. This event may have been exceptional, but every day we are all at the mercy of economic uncertainty in matters such as these: Stock market: Although the stock market has a long-term upward trend, short-term volatility can wipe out a large fraction of an investor's wealth in a single day. Careers: No job is safe from the constant assault of domestic competition, offshoring, innovation, downsizing, government regulation, and other factors. Insurance: The types of insurance products have skyrocketed to the point that you could easily spend all of your earnings to cover possible disasters. Retirement: Is your retirement secure if you live to be 100? What if you suffer a debilitating chronic disease? How will your nest egg fare if inflation soars? MORE Uncertainty also plagues us in smaller ways. For example, everyone is familiar with rising prices, but the Internet now makes it possible for online shoppers to be charged more based on their buying history, adding a new level of unpredictability to pricing. And anytime you hire someone for a service-from roofing to dentistry-you face the prin[beeep]l-agent problem, in which the person hired may take unethical advantage of your lack of expertise. Indeed, these large and small risks are so pervasive that it is all too easy to conclude that nothing can be done. But economic uncertainty is like the weather: you can't stop storms from happening, but understanding how and why they happen allows you to be prepared. In the same way, economic uncertainty is beyond our control, but we're in a much better position to respond if we know what's happening and why. In 24 practical and empowering half-hour lectures, The Economics of Uncertainty takes the mystery and dread out of uncertainty, giving you the tools to deal with risk in every phase of your life. Your guide is Professor Connel Fullenkamp, an acclaimed economist and award-winning teacher at Duke University, where he is Professor of the Practice and Director of Undergraduate Studies in Duke's nationally ranked Economics Department. Deepen Your Knowledge of Economics Gearing his presentation to novices as well as those with a background in micro- and macro-economics, Professor Fullenkamp shows that the study of uncertainty sheds light on a wide range of phenomena, including: financial markets business cycles inflation and deflation free trade regulation strategic thinking career development family financial planning The course also introduces fundamental ideas in probability, statistics, and game theory that give deep insight into the world of risk and require only high-school level mathematics. In addition, the critical thinking skills you acquire in The Economics of Uncertainty have broad applications beyond economics. For example, the decision tree approach to problem solving, presented in Lecture 7, can come to the rescue whenever you need to find the optimum path to any goal, whether it is selecting your next vacation destination or choosing the best college options for your child. Enjoy the Expertise of a Personal Advisor Governments and large financial institutions rely on teams of experts to steer them through the perilous waters of uncertainty. In The Economics of Uncertainty, Professor Fullenkamp serves as your personal advisor, explaining in detail how uncertainty works and providing valuable tips such as these: Think critically: Knowing the two types of probability-frequency-based and subjective-helps you judge the claims of people who appeal to probability to convince you to take a particular action. Weigh risk vs. benefit: When you have to choose between risky alternatives, start from the least risky choice and decide how much extra risk you can tolerate for a given amount of increased benefit. Mix it up: Since you can't negotiate prices when shopping online, be unpredictable. Don't always take the first price you're offered. Put some items in your shopping cart and then log off without buying them. Cultivate your career: Companies thrive by having a comparative advantage over their competitors. Do the same in your job by identifying what you do better than most people. Then cultivate that strength. Learn How to Survive and Thrive The trick to surviving and thriving in an uncertain economy is to know the sources of risk and how much of a threat they pose. It also helps to have a guide as experienced, eloquent, and engaging as Professor Fullenkamp, who, in his consulting work, has designed and led training courses for bankers and government officials for the International Monetary Fund in Washington, D.C. With The Economics of Uncertainty, it is your turn to experience his fascinating seminars, covering topics such as these: Black swans: Popularized by best-selling author and risk analyst Nassim Taleb, a black swan is a rare, baffling event with great impact. Professor Fullenkamp analyzes the 2008 financial crisis in light of this intriguing theory. Asymmetric information: Often one party in a transaction has a monopoly on information-for example, in a used car sale. Discover how this problem affects every sector of the economy through adverse selection and moral hazard. Compensation: Getting a job done well is often a matter of how the payment is made and what performance incentives are offered. Evaluate the risks and rewards of several approaches to compensation contracts. GaMbling: Even if you've never bought a lottery ticket or set foot in a casino, you gaMble every day. Learn how to address economic decisions with a seasoned gaMbler's knack for separating good bets from bad. One of the most important lessons about uncertainty is that it's built into the world. At times, the economy may seem like it's careening out of control, but we are simply living through the fluctuating uncertainties that have always been with us. There's no reason to despair, since uncertainty is a phenomenon that can be understood and managed. "Knowledge is power," says an old proverb. After taking this invaluable course, you'll have the essential background to manage your economic life toward a more secure future. 24 Lectures 01. Man, Nature, and Economic Uncertainty 02. 10. Basic Economics, Fourth Edition: A Common Sense Guide to the Economy English | 23 hrs 51 mins | ASIN: B004HFK0YU, ISBN: 1441778640 | MP3 | 675 Mb Genre: Audiobook, Nonfiction, Economics The fourth edition of Basic Economics is both expanded and updated. A new chapter on the history of economics itself has been added, and the implications of that history examined. Among other additions throughout the book, a new section on the special role of corporations in the economy has been added to the chapter on government and big business. Basic Economics, which has now been translated into six foreign languages, has grown so much that a large amount of material previously found in the back of the book has now been put online instead so that neither the book itself nor its price will have to expand. The central idea of Basic Economics, however, remains the same: The fundamental facts and prin[beeep]les of economics do not require jargon, graphs, or equations and can be learned in a relaxed and even enjoyable way. Ha-Joon Chang - Economics: The User's Guide Unabridged AudioBook | 2014 | Genre: General Non-Fic | English | ISBN-13: 978-0718197032 | MP3 64Kb | Length: 11 hrs and 17 mins | 310.81 MB In his best-selling 23 Things They Don't Tell You About Capitalism, Cambridge economist Ha-Joon Chang brilliantly debunked many of the predominant myths of neoclassical economics. Now, in an entertaining and accessible primer, he explains how the global economy actually works - in real-world terms. Writing with irreverent wit, a deep knowledge of history, and a disregard for conventional economic pieties, Chang offers insights that will never be found in the textbooks. Unlike many economists, who present only one view of their dis[beeep]line, Chang introduces a wide range of economic theories, from classical to Keynesian, revealing how each has its strengths and weaknesses, and why there is no one way to explain economic behavior. By ignoring the received wisdom and exposing the myriad forces that shape our financial world, Chang gives us the tools we need to understand our increasingly global and interconnected world often driven by economics. From the future of the Euro, inequality in China, or the condition of the American manufacturing industry here in the United States - Economics: The User's Guide is a concise and expertly crafted guide to economic fundamentals that offers a clear and accurate picture of the global economy and how and why it affects our daily lives. 12. Saguao Datta - Economics: Making sense of the Modern Economy: The Economist Unabridged AudioBook | 2013 | Genre: Business | English | ASIN: B00E42F9XI | MP3 64Kb | Length: 12 hrs and 49 mins | 352.56 MB The real-world realities of the far from dismal science. A radically revised new edition of this highly readable, popular guide aimed at everyone from students to statesmen who want to make sense of the modern economy and grasp how economic theory works in practice. It starts with the basics: what economics is about; the sources of economic growth such as people and investment; the role of central banks and fiscal policy in setting the macroeconomic framework; and the economics of everything - microeconomics. From the underlying theory it moves to the specifics of the world economy: the developed world and the rise of emerging economies; the issues of global imbalances and the runaway world of finance; and the recent "great" recession - why it happened, how it was dealt with, its effects, its legacy and the way ahead. The closing part puts the usefulness and the failings of economics under the spotlight, and looks at the innovative approaches being developed to make what has been called the "dismal science" fit for the modern world.
