The opening track features a symmetry between the guitars and synth lines, while the non-verbal vocals hit the mark in terms of being in key. As was other artists from the Innovative Communications label the attempt was at least to bridge the gap between the ever improving technology and the boundary of what is written music. With tracks like Flying High and High Noon, they show what would be progressive composition...that is the music gets grander with each repetitive line (chorus). To top off the eclecticism, she employs the trombone trio of Fred Wesley, Craig Harris, and Tyrone Jefferson, resulting in an intoxicating album that's as adventurous as it is accessible. Cook's spry readings of Matthew Gee's "Oh Gee" and the gleaming bossa nova prance of Dori Caymmi's "Like a Lover" show off her optimistic voice and needlepoint articulation and intonation. Cook recalls a young Nancy Wilson, especially on the frisky opener, "The More I See You." Her singing, however, gets bluesier on the funky "Dem Bones" and the gospel favorite, "Come, Ye Disconsolate." Even on the oddball selection of Bobbie Gentry's "Ode to Billie Joe," Cook delivers the tune with a lithe rhythmic flair that never diminishes the emotional weight of the song. "Camel Walk" (Jazzland, 2008) is pianist Maria Kannegaard's third album, recorded as a trio together with Ole Morten V??gan on contra bass, and Thomas Str??nen on drums. After her initial releases of 2000's "Breaking the Surface" (Act), and her second studio album of 2005, "Quiet Joy" (Jazzland), we are again warmly welcomed into Kannegaard's exquisite style. Consisting of ten songs composed by Kannegaard, we are taken on something of a musical journey. "Drifting Down the Nile" opens the album, followed by the irking "Haunted". You may notice that this time, Kannegaard's usually developed soloing is on this album is placed within the context of a collective sound. We pause briefly to reflect over "A Cup of Coffee and Some Danish Pastries" before we embark on the title track, "Camel Walk". You may also notice the cross-cultural pollination of jazz, singer/songwriter style, avant garde and indie rock flavorings. Further on, we are introduced to Kannegaard's impeccable technique and expressiveness, as well as through "Sliding Doors", "Traveling Pass" and finally, "We Interrupt for a Short Commercial". It is the welcoming tone of the album overall which places it firmly in one of the most intriguing chamber jazz recordings of the year. We can hear touches of Kannegaard's influences, such as the music of Keith Jarret and Bill Evans in her improvisational skills, and in the disjointed melodic structures of Geri Allen and Herbie Nichols, two composers and performers very near to her heart. However, it is her own style that breaks through, and fused with Thomas Str??nen's always perceptive percussion and Ole Morten V??gan's artfully syncopated bass, it all comes together as an organic whole, a true hallmark of Norwegian jazz. The piano trio never sounded so modern, yet respectfully pays tribute to the traditions of the past, however enveloping them in Kannegaard's forward-looking style. David Lang's the little match girl passion, for vocal quartet doubling on percussion instruments, won the Pulitzer Prize in 2008. It's a strong, striking piece with a surprisingly potent emotional punch. Part of its effectiveness derives from the story itself, which is so achingly poignant that it can hardly fail to raise a lump in the throat. The text is primarily compiled from the story by Hans Christian Andersen and from familiar sections from Bach's St. Matthew Passion, which sound fresh and new in English translation. Lang's clear-eyed avoidance of sentimentality saves the story from the bathos into which it could easily sink in a less skillful musical setting. Several movements have a trademark minimalist sound surface, whose repetitions (rarely literal here; Lang is a master of subtle rhythmic and melodic shifts) can drive home a point with stark power. The movements share a melodic simplicity that gives them the immediacy of plainchant, but the insistent repetitions, irregular overlapping polyphonic lines, and clashing harmonies mark this as a modern, even innovative work. Part of its genius lies in Lang's ability to create music that sounds archaic and universal, and at the same time entirely contemporary. The performance by Paul Hillier's four-member Theatre of Voices is nothing less than astounding in its purity, clarity, precision, and warm blend. The music creates a mood of simple directness, but it makes technically outrageous demands on the performers, and it's a testimony to the singers' virtuosity that they make it sound spontaneous and effortless. The CD is filled out with four a cappella works admirably performed by Ars Nova Copenhagen. The harmonic stasis and repetitions that characterize these works make them more conventionally minimalist, and as a group they make less of an impact than the featured work. The most persuasive is evening morning day, a setting of the first creation story in Genesis, in which Lang sets only the nouns (although the omits the name of God, and sneaks in a few adjectives.) Using this small set of words, he plays with listeners' musical expectations, as verbal patterns emerge and subtly evolve through the progression of the narrative. The sound of the SACD is vibrant, present, and life-like, particularly in the little match girl passion. Fog Edagh? n (Ghost Track) - Tinariwen Tinariwen is a Tuareg group that performs a guitar-centric branch of Malian music that, to the untrained ear, is reminiscent of Ali Farka Tour??'s, but is far more rock-oriented and percussive. All of the band's musicians originate from the southern Sahara; the group's name, meaning "empty places," is a reflection of their land of origin. The band formed in the rebel camps of Colonel Gaddafi, as each of the musicians had been forced from their nomadic lifestyle into involuntary military service. Surrounded by a displaced nation of their peers, Tinariwen forged a new style of music, trading their traditional lutes and shepherd's flutes for electric guitars and drums. The style that resulted was dubbed "Tishoumaren," or "the music of the unemployed." Their music addresses issues such as political awakening, problems of exile, repression of their people, and demands of sovereignty. In a region with no postal or telephone system, their tapes soon became a grassroots voice of rebellion and a rallying point for the disenfranchised nation. Though outlawed in Algeria and Mali, 2001's The Radio Tisdas Sessions and 2004's Amassakoul are available to Western audiences. In 2006, they recorded their third album, Aman Iman: Water Is Life, released internationally in 2007 by Harmonia Mundi's World Village imprint. The album was produced by Justin Adams, and featured the voice and guitar of founding member Mohammed Ag Itlale. Tinariwen toured the world for the first time in its wake. They followed the album with Imidiwan: Companions, a two-disc set containing one disc of music and a DVD documentary about Tinariwen's history. This was once again followed by a world tour that included numerous festival appearances in the United States and Europe. Tinariwen signed to America's Anti imprint in 2010. The label encouraged them to experiment. The end result was Tassili, issued in 2011, in which the band recorded a completely acoustic set in a protected region of the southeastern Algerian desert. The tapes were flown to America where guitarist Nels Cline overdubbed electric guitars and New Orleans' famed Dirty Dozen Brass Band added horns, making Tassili a truly international collaboration. The album won a Grammy. The bandmembers were forced to flee Mali due to political and social unrest, and recorded their follow-up, Emmaar, at a studio in Joshua Tree National Park in the United States. It was released in February of 2014. Laura [5:41] Herb Alpert had never really embraced his inner jazzman over the course of an entire album before; the closest he came was 1992's Midnight Sun, ultimately a highly controlled cocoon of a recording. But this, at long last, is it, and it represents a string of firsts for the protean trumpeter -- his first truly straight-ahead jazz project, his first all-new album of any kind in ten years, his first complete album with his wife, singer Lani Hall (who gets co-billing), and his first released by a label which he did not co-own. The concept grew out of a series of live dates that he and Hall played in various cities, from which these tracks were assembled. Despite some apparent lightly applied overdubs, it remains an intimate small group album of mostly standards, the kind of thing one might run across at Vibrato -- Alpert's jazz club in the hills above Los Angeles. Hall appears in tandem with Alpert on nine of the 14 tracks -- with Alpert taking five for himself -- which guarantees an additional unique layer of intimacy as Alpert wraps his pithy horn lovingly around Hall's voice. Hall has kept her Portuguese in gear, doing well by Ivan Lins' "Dinorah, Dinorah" and the rapid-fire syllables of "Para-Raio." She adopts a dark, dusky tone on "That Old Black Magic," and for "Let's Face the Music And Dance," she takes on an air of desperation, focusing on the words, "there may be trouble ahead." Still in good shape in his seventies, Alpert retains the marcato bravado of the Tijuana Brass days and the more recent, terse, moody, muted tones of a Miles acolyte; in "It's Only a Paper Moon," these two personas go mano a mano rather humorously. "The Trolley Song," done at an unusually lazy, loping pace by the Tijuana Brass more than four decades before, is taken at a more traditionally quick, Latin-accented tempo here, and this is the third time around for "I've Grown Accustomed to Your Face" -- now a casual vocal showcase for Alpert with a witty coda that sneaks in a horn lick from "This Guy's in Love with You." The adept backup trio of Bill Cantos on keyboards -- who comes up with a few nifty quotes himself -- Hussain Jiffry on electric bass, and Michael Shapiro on drums and Latin percussion goes down agreeably. This is a classy, welcome return to album-making for Alpert, and a good fit for Concord's adult-oriented roster. -- Richard S. While 1981's Radiant and 1982's Brilliance -- the two previous Atlantic Starr LPs that Carmichael had produced -- were superb, this 1983 release is uneven. That isn't to say that Yours Forever is a bad album; none of the material is terrible. But this time, there aren't as many five-star gems. The songs that deserve to be exalted as gems range from the haunting smash "Touch a Four Leaf Clover" and the rock-tinged "Tryin" (both of which feature Bryant) to the dreamy title song (which finds David Lewis providing a memorable lead vocal). Unfortunately, Yours Forever also has its share of songs that are merely competent. Take "I Want Your Love," for example. This Chic-like sophisti-funk/dance number (which shouldn't be confused with the 1978 Chic hit that is also titled "I Want Your Love") is pleasant enough, but it isn't in a class with "Circles," "When Love Calls," "Love Me Down," and other treasures that Carmichael had produced for Atlantic Starr in 1981 or 1982. For Atlantic Starr fans, hearing Yours Forever in 1983 was like receiving beer when you had grown accustomed to champagne -- if Radiant and Brilliance were R&B feasts, Yours Forever is merely a snack. It isn't a disaster, but it doesn't live up to the consistently high standards that had characterized Atlantic Starr's previous work with Carmichael. Adagio The 32 Piano Sonatas by Ludwig van Beethoven are often referred to as the 'New Testament' of the keyboard literature, following on the 'Old Testament' of J.S. Bach's 48 preludes and fugues in the Well-Tempered Clavier. Composed over a period of almost three decades, from 1795 to 1822, the sonatas constitute a fascinating panorama of an artistic career which underwent numerous changes not to say upheavals but nevertheless remained remarkably consistent. Ever since the first recording of the entire cycle, by Artur Schnabel in the 1930s, a number of the world's leading pianists have given us their performances of this monumental collection on disc. One of the latest cycles is that of Ronald Brautigam, released on single discs between 2004 and 2010. Performed on the fortepiano, as part of a series of Beethoven's complete solo keyboard works, Brautigam's recordings have been described as 'riveting', 'compelling' and 'revolutionary'. The eight discs with the 32 sonatas are now being released as a boxed set, along with a ninth disc containing the early, unnumbered sonatas. Contributing factors to the 'refreshing directness' that reviewers have experienced in these performances are the widely praised recorded sound and the carefully selected instruments, built by Paul McNulty after originals from 1788-1819 by the foremost Viennese makers of fortepianos.
