Taylor's performance is indeed the highlight, just as Eric Clapton and Peter Green's playing was on the previous album. The centerpiece of the album is a beautiful instrumental by Taylor titled "Snowy Wood," which, while wholly original, seems to combine both Green and Clapton's influence with great style and sensibility. The rest of the record, while very enjoyable, is standard blues-rock fare of the day, but somewhat behind the then-progressive flavor of 1967. Mayall, while being one of the great bandleaders of London, simply wasn't really the frontman that the group needed so desperately, especially then. By its sound Polygon is little turning away from the face that showed us album Sein Lernen and this time the story is set in the bowels of the darker and more experimental blocks. Dark, atmospheric corners are waving in movies atmospheres. Hypnotic strings pulsates through this whole concept and minimalistic - crystalline sequences are almost stabbed into the heart of your subconscious. Part of the album is also strong cooperation with the project Nerthus and the audio portion is signed by none other than genius Headdreamer and his powerful sound engineering. Graphic concept has been again outlined with his unique eye from the main protagonist himself and his design company Spiel Sinn. This album will definitely be interesting for the listeners that likes darker and more extravagant positions of industrial culture. From "Cool Blues Stole My Heart," to "Love and Affection," and "Show Some Emotion," to "Drop the Pilot," "(I Love It When You) Call Me Names," and even lesser known tunes like "Feelin In My Heart for You," and "Heaven," which closes the set. There is little that's left out, making this one of the most glorious "Best Of's" to come out in the Chronicles series. If there was a true introduction to Armatrading, this one serves the role far better than a mere ten-cut greatest hits. Recorded straight to tape as you would in those days, these tracks pre-date his now classic 1998 album Spectrum and still sound as futuristic as his music did back in the late 90's. There is a certain eeriness to this music, it sounds almost out of time with itself and while the touchstones of ambient works 85-92 Aphex and the more sedate BOC shadows the music, the overall sound is one of uniqueness. Drifting between electro sketches and gabba workouts to more drill 'n' bass (remember that!) excursions the overall feel of an LP of sketches more than a full flowing structured album is apparent, but this does not matter when the sounds are so well formulated. A vital piece of history from Manchester's long running tradition of bedroom electronic scientists from Martin Hannett to Muslimgauze and a testament to a bygone era of electronica that sounds like a future we have yet to fully realize or arrive in. After studying every available tools and creating variably hybrid connections between them, I chose to compose several short sequences, each being the expression of a research based on a sonic manipulation and exploring a well defined sound hue. Besides, my background as a percussionist and a jazzman encouraged me to conduct a rhythmical study in each of these sequences. 'Erda' consists of seven movements: 1. Variations: a lengthy framework interwoven with granular variations. 2. Cellules (Cells): this movement comprises a group of melodico-rhythmic cells shifting from the left channel to the right channel. The slightly raucous and acid texture of the 'square' sounds, that can be heard in several movements, is a reminder of saxophone and muted brass sonorities, as used in contemporary jazz. 3. Grillons: (crickets) an evocation of the realm of insects. 4. 54 oiseaux (birds): stereotypical bird songs produced by the generators of the studio 54. 5. Erda: a tribute to the Goddess of Wisdom and the Earth in Wagner's Das Rheingold and Siegfried. 6. G??norgue: this sequence is somehow mirroring Cellules. The sound has however lost some of its aggressiveness and is getting closer to that of an organ or an electric piano. 7. Klook: rhythmical drumming figures such as those Kenny Clarke (aka Klook) used to teach me. 8. In memoriam J.C.: a tribute to John Coltrane. Suite N (1982) Commissioned by the Direction de la Musique and the Ina GRM. Composed in the Ina GRM's numerical composition studio with the assistance of Benedict Maillard and Yann Geslin. In a composition studio, musical research is never very far removed from madness. The first step is the initial work on the sound picked up by the microphone and the varieties of delirium that result from it : exaggerated amplification, inversion, transformation. Synthesizers and their crazy possibilities com next. The third step is the computer, one of the purest products of logic. All the same, the musician approaches the robot warily : he prefers his own models to formal and mathematical models, and he uses the computer like an instrument. Anyway that seems to be the choice of the computer group in charge of studio 123 at the G R M ; and we may congratulate ourselves that this is the case. Thanks to the MUSIC V program. GRM's PDP 11 computer can synthesize sounds from any instrument. Mainly it can transform and treat absolutely any sound fed into its memory : sequence accumulation, contraction, drawing out of sequence, acceleration, slowing down, reversing, spatialization, filtering, speed variation, etc.. all this on a much broader scale than comparable traditional means. My intention in 'Suite N' was, on the one hand, to use solely sounds produced by the computer either by direct synthesis (MUSIC V) or by sound treatment, and, on the other hand, to work with a definite form. A, B and C correspond to the exposition of the themes. A' B' and C', to their variations. Each of the nine families of sounds represents a different instrument. Originally composed by Hungarian Reszo Seress in 1933 as "Szomor?? Vas??rnap," it was quickly rewritten with lyrics by poet Laslo Javor, and recorded by P??l Kalm??r in 1934, becoming the infamous "Hungarian Suicide Song," among the populace. It has been imputed for the countless suicides connected with it, and considered a source of urban legend surrounding the tragedies. Holiday's popularization of the song caused the BBC to ban it from airplay-until 2002-due to its morose and despondent lyrics. Hungarian Noir is a compilation of diverse variations on the "Gloomy Sunday," theme. The song is covered in several languages by international artists, and undergoes unique instrumental adaptations as well. The English lyrics by Sam M. Lewis are utilized, or loosely translated. No two versions are even remotely similar, the only common thread among them is the nucleus of the song itself, the disparity is obvious and that is exactly what the attraction is. The record begins with the Cuban acappella group Vocal Sampling, whose lead singer's accented voicing depicts the lost Latin lover. In keeping with the Cuban connection, Manolito Simonet y Su Trabuco perform a danceable instrumental mambo version, and Havana vocalist Glenda Lopez envelopes the song in a charanga rhythm. The mood travels to Mozambique where it undertakes an African/Portuguese transformation with singer Yolanda Chicane joining the group Wazimbo, and Brazilian hip-hop artist GOG gives it a tropical street groove with a rap twist. The American group Matuto present a swaying samba infused rendition, while the Polish superstar Kayah, singing in her native tongue, delivers with an avant-garde dance edge to her Eastern approach. Chango Spasiuk hails from Argentina, and saturates the theme in an acoustical tango infusion, for a deepening forlorn interpretation. Continuing with the South American vibe, the folkloric Colombian band Bambarabanda adds dramatic poetic flairs to the vocalization. K??lm??n Balogh and Mikl??s Luk??cs are two virtuosos of the cimbalom (Hungarian dulcimer) who formed Cimbalomduo, to honor this traditional and respected instrument. They offer a heart wrenching elucidation, with dark passages depicting authentic sadness and despair. The definitive Billie Holiday version is featured next to last, and the final track is the Hungarian recording by P??l Kalm??r, the first vocal rendition. Both of these singers took this song to widespread audiences, though in different times and languages, back when radio was the established norm of music appreciation. Phonograph records would of course make the song available for the masses, and with the records came the connection to tragedy, as people tended to replay and repeat the song, wrapping the lyrics around their melancholia. There have been many covers of "Gloomy Sunday" in the modern era, though none of them can rival Holiday's for effect and influence. Hungarian Noir is a heroic attempt to shake the song from its depressive association and reveal it as a work of musical art worthy of celebratory recognition, proposing it as a song for the ages. West Coast Blues This Horace Parlan session is a bit different from most of his albums for Steeplechase. First, he utilizes a drummerless trio with guitarist Doug Raney and bassist Wilbur Little. Second, it was recorded initially via direct-to-disc, which meant no editing was possible and an entire album side had to be recorded in one take without stopping. The short-lived revival of this process produced albums of exquisite sound, but they had to be limited edition due to the limited wear the few disc masters could endure in the manufacturing process. Fortunately, the masters were either in great condition or the session was also taped on reels as well, because the identical six songs (played in the same order) are heard in alternate versions on this expanded CD reissue. The ease with which Parlan and Raney handle "Hi-Fly" over Little's walking bass is the mark of masters, while the bittersweet air of the bossa nova "Once I Loved" is carried by the guitarist. (Interlude) [01:19] The CD from versatile keyboard player Bob Baldwin is All In A Days Work. It is his first on 215 Records and his tenth overall. Released this fall, and following on from his work as Executive Director of the hugely successful Croton Point Park Music Fest in Croton NY, it comes at a busy time for Baldwin as he juggles performing and recording with his duties as DJ on the morning show at KJAZ 98.1 in Bermuda. The album is a fresh mix of Latin, R & B and smooth jazz rhythms all enhanced by Baldwin's stylish production and the collaboration of top notch guest performers. Bob Baldwin was born in Mount Vernon, NY and grew up in Westchester County. He learned to play piano from his father, the accomplished jazz pianist Robert Baldwin Sr. who shared the stage with the likes of Max Roach and Stevie Wonder. During his development Baldwin Jr. studied both classical and jazz standards. Bob worked at MCI and Sprint Communications and while with them attended Geneva College in Beaver Falls, PA where he earned a degree in Business Administration. In 1986 he formed the The Bob Baldwin/Al Orlo Project and it was their performances at the legendary Bottom Line in New York City that led to his first production with trumpeter Tom Browne. This opportunity was also the route to his first album, The Dream Featuring Bob Baldwin. It was released on Malaco Jazz Records in 1988. In 1989 Roberta Flack selected Baldwin as the winner of a Sony Innovators award for that album and during the ceremony in Beverly Hills he got the chance to meet Herbie Hancock who had been one of his major influences in his formative years. Securing a two-album deal with Atlantic Jazz Records Baldwin released Rejoice in 1990. Reflections of Love followed in 1992 and climbed to #7 on the contemporary jazz chart but the association came to an abrupt end when the label folded in 1994. As Bobs career progressed he did not let his business training go to waste. He independently produced his 2000 creation Bob Baldwin.com that was subsequently distributed through the Virgin/EMI Network. It sold an impressive 60,000 copies and made #17 on the Billboard contemporary chart. He also used his business skills to develop and negotiate his recording deal with Narada Jazz where he released the CD Standing Tall in 2002. He later negotiated a deal with the now defunct A440 label to release Brazil Chill in 2004. Prior to the cessation of that labels trading he had to again rely on his business acumen by purchasing the masters of Brazil Chill. This proved to be a shrewd move as subsequently the majority of A440's material was auctioned off in an Illinois bankruptcy court. The Latin rhythms that were a center piece of Brazil Chill are again in evidence on All In A Days Work. This is apparent as early as the first track, the sophisticated, Latin laced 'New York Minute' where rippling keyboards from Baldwin and excellent flute from Ragan Whiteside makes this smooth as smooth can be. A similar vibe permeates 'The Very Last Night In Rio'. Big, brassy and funky too, if ever there was a last night in Rio this is surely how it would feel. Also Latin tinged is the wonderfully laid back 'Day-O' with an intro inspired by the Earth Wind and Fire classic 'Sun Goddess' and Mo White style backing vocals from Zolea. Zolea moves center stage on 'Sunrise' and makes a nice job of this gentle piece of smooth R & B whereas with the second vocal track on the album, 'Can You Feel It', Tonni Smith makes this urban soulful roller sound like a modern day dance classic in the making. In fact it's so memorable that Baldwin takes a one minute snippet of the same number and uses it as the CD's play out track. The album is of a consistently high standard throughout and Baldwin's production skills in developing the full sound of Dave Mann on sax and Barry Danielian on trumpet is a major feature of the recording. These excellent horns combined with a memorable smooth jazz melody from Baldwin really light up the slightly retro sounding 'Steamy'. It's a track that could well be defined as mid tempo chill and when later in the album Bob chooses to reprise it as a cool 51 second interlude the chill factor is even more pronounced. Chill is also on the agenda with 'Don't Get Twisted'. Penned by Baldwin ten years ago this slice of top notch late night smooth jazz is moody, jazzy, subtle and a full seven minutes and forty four seconds long. The first track to be identified for radio play is the title cut where infectious backing vocals and the horns of Mann and Danielian provide 'smooth jazz with body' while at the other end of the spectrum is the dreamy and delightful 'Quality Time'. Cool flute from Ragan Whiteside and the tinkling keys of Baldwin blend to evoke the sounds of a gently running mountain stream. 'Quirky' could be better titled as 'bouncy' as this, combined with tight and funky, is what it is. Phil Hamilton's guitar work is notable as is the way Bob glides his keyboard melodies in and out to make this a real foot tapper. A genuine piece of quality smooth jazz and perhaps the best track on the album is the hugely catchy 'Third Time's The Charm'. The horns, again great but this time understated so that less is definitely more, should help this one finds its way to radio. I have previously summed up the music of Bob Baldwin as being simply great to listen to and All In A Days Work continues to re-enforce that opinion. The tour then turned toward the Sawtooths for a Tuesday night show at Boise State University before continuing in California and beyond. The BSU Pavilion was opened in 1982 as the Boise State Broncos' basketball arena with a concert capacity of about 13,000. Tickets for Phish cost $26.50 with a GA floor and reserved seating in the stands. This was the band's second show at this venue (they had opened summer 1995 there) and their last show to-date in Idaho. Given the days off on both sides, the seven hour drive from Portland and the ten-plus hour drive to Shoreline for the next shows, many opted to skip this gig but those who took the trip were justly rewarded and those who didn't will never forget it. Boise's Set I kicked off with Chalk Dust Torture and featured The Curtain > Waste, a dramatic sequence of Loving Cup > What's The Use? and Wading In The Velvet Sea > Farmhouse, and a hot Taste. The mostly non-stop set II began with the first Peaches en Regalia in more than two years, followed by an AC/DC Bag for the ages. This Bag was a tour de force of multi-modal improvisation culminating in a psychedelic freakout so far Out that swirling vacuum ambiance was the only way to wrap it. The Boise Bag spilled over into a standout Gumbo with a slow funk Another One Bites The Dust jam that cemented Boise's snooze-you-lose status. A frenetic Down With Disease > Frankenstein (with a nod to Pink Floyd) capped the set. The encore was Simple with a live fade-out that gave the band time to move downstage for an A cappella Hello My Baby to close out a magical night at BSU.
