Fog Edagh? n (Ghost Track) - Tinariwen Tinariwen is a Tuareg group that performs a guitar-centric branch of Malian music that, to the untrained ear, is reminiscent of Ali Farka Tour??'s, but is far more rock-oriented and percussive. All of the band's musicians originate from the southern Sahara; the group's name, meaning "empty places," is a reflection of their land of origin. The band formed in the rebel camps of Colonel Gaddafi, as each of the musicians had been forced from their nomadic lifestyle into involuntary military service. Surrounded by a displaced nation of their peers, Tinariwen forged a new style of music, trading their traditional lutes and shepherd's flutes for electric guitars and drums. The style that resulted was dubbed "Tishoumaren," or "the music of the unemployed." Their music addresses issues such as political awakening, problems of exile, repression of their people, and demands of sovereignty. In a region with no postal or telephone system, their tapes soon became a grassroots voice of rebellion and a rallying point for the disenfranchised nation. Though outlawed in Algeria and Mali, 2001's The Radio Tisdas Sessions and 2004's Amassakoul are available to Western audiences. In 2006, they recorded their third album, Aman Iman: Water Is Life, released internationally in 2007 by Harmonia Mundi's World Village imprint. The album was produced by Justin Adams, and featured the voice and guitar of founding member Mohammed Ag Itlale. Tinariwen toured the world for the first time in its wake. They followed the album with Imidiwan: Companions, a two-disc set containing one disc of music and a DVD documentary about Tinariwen's history. This was once again followed by a world tour that included numerous festival appearances in the United States and Europe. Tinariwen signed to America's Anti imprint in 2010. The label encouraged them to experiment. The end result was Tassili, issued in 2011, in which the band recorded a completely acoustic set in a protected region of the southeastern Algerian desert. The tapes were flown to America where guitarist Nels Cline overdubbed electric guitars and New Orleans' famed Dirty Dozen Brass Band added horns, making Tassili a truly international collaboration. The album won a Grammy. The bandmembers were forced to flee Mali due to political and social unrest, and recorded their follow-up, Emmaar, at a studio in Joshua Tree National Park in the United States. It was released in February of 2014. While 1981's Radiant and 1982's Brilliance -- the two previous Atlantic Starr LPs that Carmichael had produced -- were superb, this 1983 release is uneven. That isn't to say that Yours Forever is a bad album; none of the material is terrible. But this time, there aren't as many five-star gems. The songs that deserve to be exalted as gems range from the haunting smash "Touch a Four Leaf Clover" and the rock-tinged "Tryin" (both of which feature Bryant) to the dreamy title song (which finds David Lewis providing a memorable lead vocal). Unfortunately, Yours Forever also has its share of songs that are merely competent. Take "I Want Your Love," for example. This Chic-like sophisti-funk/dance number (which shouldn't be confused with the 1978 Chic hit that is also titled "I Want Your Love") is pleasant enough, but it isn't in a class with "Circles," "When Love Calls," "Love Me Down," and other treasures that Carmichael had produced for Atlantic Starr in 1981 or 1982. For Atlantic Starr fans, hearing Yours Forever in 1983 was like receiving beer when you had grown accustomed to champagne -- if Radiant and Brilliance were R&B feasts, Yours Forever is merely a snack. It isn't a disaster, but it doesn't live up to the consistently high standards that had characterized Atlantic Starr's previous work with Carmichael. Of the three albums that Carmichael produced for Atlantic Starr in the early '80s, Yours Forever is the least essential and the most inconsistent. Tracklist: 01. Yours Forever (4:55) 02. Recorded less than a year after Wes and Wynton's classic 1965 live album 'Smokin' at the Half Note', which guitarist Pet Metheny calls "the absolute greatest jazz guitar album ever made," 'Smokin' in Seattle' finds the dynamic duo joined by the solid rhythm section of bassist Ron McClure (Charles Lloyd, Joe Henderson) and legendary drummer Jimmy Cobb. Located in the heart of Seattle's historic district in Pioneer Square,the Penthouse jazz club was opened in 1962 by Charles Puzzo, Sr., and quickly became a destination for iconic jazz talents such as John Coltrane, Oscar Peterson, Stan Getz and The Three Sounds to name a few. Well-known radio personality, Jim Wilke, developed a working relationship with this legendary club, which in turn allowed him to air live broadcasts from the club every Thursday night using state-of-the-art equipment of that era. His weekly radio show, Jazz from the Penthouse, aired on Seattle's NPR affiliate, KING FM from 1962 through 1968, and has never been rebroadcast. When executive producer George Klabin learned of these recordings, he couldn't believe his good fortune to come across this thrilling 1960s material of Wes Montgomery with Wynton Kelly. Wynton Kelly first collaborated with Wes Montgomery in 1962 with their album Full House (Riverside), also with Jimmy Cobb on drums (McClure joined Wynton Kelly's trio a few years later in 1965, replacing Paul Chambers), followed by the legendary Smokin' at the Half Note . And now we have Smokin' in Seattle, a new chapter in the storied collaboration of these two jazz giants. This 10-track album is indeed a "smokin'" musical exchange between Wynton and Wes, swinging with fire-cracker energy. The Wynton Kelly trio opened each set of the 9-night engagement with a couple of tunes before Wes joined them on stage. The album opens with "There Is No Greater Love," an upbeat rendition of Isham Jones's well known jazz standard. Wynton glides through seven choruses filled with his trademark lyrical legato lines, with bluesy twists and turns along the way. His joyous playing is apparent from the start. In an interview with Kenny Baron included in the liner notes, he says, "Wynton was kind of in a class by himself. His touch, his feeling, his sense of time, sense of rhythm... For me it was just very, very unique." Often underappreciated as a player, despite his years with Miles Davis, Wynton remains an iconic figure, for jazz fans and next generation of jazz players. Since the release of their 1985 classic "Secret Lovers" (#3 Billboard pop charts), Atlantic Starr has geared much of their material toward the crossover market. This project follows suit with the exception of a few cuts. The leadoff single "I'll Remember You" struggled on the Billboard R&B and pop charts, peaking at #58 and #55 respectively. Aside from its semi-catchy chorus, the song's ignition stalls. "Let's Just Sneak Around" has a soulful, urban feel enhanced by Wayne Lewis' gritty delivery. "Everybody's Got Summer," which pairs David Lewis and featured female vocalist Aisha Tanner, has an attractive beat, but it is charged by a sample from Young-Holt Unlimited's "Soulful Strut." The one song that comes close to that magic the group created in their heyday is "Lovin' You All Over Again." But the pair first explored the depths of their musical relationship in this excellent and aptly titled quartet session. Recorded in 1964, the same year Zoller won Down Beat's Talent Deserving Wider Recognition award, Dreams and Explorations is a challenging, evocative program of creative, improvised music that is never as predictable as traditional bop nor as ponderous, pretentious or piercing as free jazz. There is an "open" quality to the music that allows for both interaction and exploration, yet the listener is never baffled by any journey any one musician takes. The three jazz standards ("Israel," "Darn That Dream" and "You Stepped Out of A Dream") are instructive of the quartet's investigative methodology (reminiscent of the boundaries from which Paul Bley was breaking free during the same period). But the real beauty lies in the less structured journeys the two leaders conceive. There is Friedman's 'unwritten' "Episodes" and the twelve tone rows of "Park Row. Then there's Zoller's freer "Exploration" and the intriguing freedom-in-a-foundation of "Blizzard." The thesis is movement, or the ability to inspire motion. It is about the musicians' ability to explore at will and the listener's intuition to be moved (physically or emotionally) by the sounds. A daunting concept. But it actually works. Zoller achieves a beautiful sound that is filled with fluid, always assured conceptions and Friedman glides so effortlessly over wide-reaching ideas, that you are dazzled by the sparkle of his imagination only after the fact. Friedman and Zoller, having sensed such a powerful musical chemistry, recorded in more duo situations (until Zoller's death earlier this year). But this is the one to hear. Live in Montreux 1976-1994 features the exciting blues guitarist/singer Luther Allison on selections taken from four appearances at the Montreux Jazz Festival. Although the title says 1974-1994, the earliest numbers are actually from 1976, and these are the most memorable cuts on the CD. Even when sticking to cover tunes throughout the powerhouse performance (such as "Sweet Home Chicago" and "Little Red Rooster"), Allison plays with such enthusiasm and ferocity that he sounds as if he wrote the songs himself. Among the other highlights, Allison is heard on his 1983 set closer "Sky Is Crying," shouting out a Memphis soul-type ballad ("Memories") in 1984 and sounding remarkably close to B.B. King at times during 1994's "Bad Love" (which has background riffs from the Memphis Horns). Ritchie Blackmore, Tony Ashton, Big Jim Sullivan, Albert Lee, Chas Hodges, Matthew Fisher, and Ian Paice are just some of the luminaries who showed up for the super session, which was recorded in the first half of 1970 and issued on LP in America in 1971, a year earlier than it was in Europe. With the identities of the bandmembers effectively hidden behind pseudonyms, it's not entirely surprising that the album never rose beyond cult status on either side of the Atlantic.
