Takaishi inspired Japan to compete on the world stage and helped turn its swimmers into Olympic powerhouses. He and Kahanamoku in particular shattered the myth of white superiority when it came to sports, putting the lie to the decade's burgeoning eugenics movement. Three Kings traces the careers and rivalries of these men and the epochal times they lived in. The 1920s were transformative, not just socially but for sports as well. For the first time, athletes of color were given a fair (though still not equal) chance, and competition wasn't limited to the wealthy and privileged. His deep love for the Song of Songs has inspired many of the inclusions, and its nature imagery threads through the disc, adding a suggestion of renewal and rebirth to the memorial tone of works written in the difficult months after his untimely death. Rhino can usually be counted on to do its homework when assembling compilations, and this superb 18-song CD is no exception. Serious fans of what came to be called salsa will be more than familiar with such classics as Celia Cruz's "Tumba La Cana, Jibarito," Beny More's "Me Gusta Mas El Son" and Tito Puente's "Guaguanco Margarito" - all of which are essential listening for even the most casual salseros. Recorded in 1949, the oldest song here is the infectious "Un Poquito De Tu Amor" by Desi Arnaz, who became well known for his role on the television comedy "I Love Lucy." From Tito Rodriguez, Cachao and the ultra-influential Machito to master percussionists/band leaders Ray Barretto and Mongo Santamaria, many of salsa's all-time greats are well represented by this outstanding collection.
